CLOVER - Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Strange Leonard, 46, of 1315 Regal Oaks Lane died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Sunday at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. William K. Neely officiating.

Mrs. Strange was born in Gaston County.

Surviving are her husband, Robert E. Leonard of the home; her son, Johnny Giles; two brothers, Hubert Strange of Corpus Cristi, Texas, and Junior Strange of Montana; and her sister, Kathy Strange of Gastonia, N.C.

Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Carolinas Chapter, Bldg. 7, Ste. 217, Woodlawn Green Office Park, Charlotte, NC 29217.

Harold Martin

CHESTER - Mr. Harold Wallace Martin, 69, of 910 Charity Road died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Lowrys Baptist Church, with the Revs. Gregg Keller, Chris Snelgrove and Roger Thomas officiating. Burial will be at Zion Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Born in Pickens County, Mr. Martin was a truck driver for James T. Triplett Inc. He attended the schools of Pickens County.

Surviving are his wife, Blanche McFadden Martin of Chester; three sons, Dean Martin, Steve Martin and Gary Martin, all of Chester; his daughter, Cathy M. Winn of Chester; two brothers, Wayne Aiken and Jeff Aiken, both of Easley; four sisters, Ethel Sealy of York, Juanita Waldrop of Central and Vivian Harrison and Gwen Durham, both of Easley; five grandchildren reared by the Martins, Deanna Mobley, Page Baker, Stephanie Crouch and Jerome Winn, all of Chester, and Tammy Dickson of Rock Hill; eight additional grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Wilbur Medlin

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mr. Wilbur Eugene "Bill" Medlin, 73, of 1014 Dumbarton Road died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Mountain Area Hospice in Asheville, N.C.

A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Gaston Memorial Park, with Dr. Leon Smith and the Rev. Glenn Phillips officiating.

A Great Falls native, Mr. Medlin was the owner of Medlin Drug Store. He was a member of the Pharmaceutical Association of North Carolina, a member of the Masonic Lodge of Gastonia, a graduate of the University of South Carolina and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Gastonia, where he was a Sunday school teacher and a deacon.

Surviving are his wife, Mary E. Medlin; two sons, Steve Medlin of Gastonia and Tom Medlin of Huntersville, N.C.; his daughter, Melinda Poston of Surfside Beach; two brothers, Wayne Medlin of Fairview Heights, Ill., and Ray Medlin of Charleston; his sister, Janie Lee Lindsey of Great Falls; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Carothers Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church building fund, 201 W. Franklin Ave., Gastonia, NC 28052.

Willie Mae Shivers

CHESTER - Mrs. Willie Mae Gray Shivers, 83, of the Meadow Haven Rehabilitation and Specialty Care Center, formerly of 108 Dye St. in Chester, died Thursday at the center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Black Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Shivers was a member of Black Rock Baptist Church, a former member of the vocal choir and a member of AP&B Society No. 29. She was a retired nurse's aide at the Chester County Hospital. She was the widow of David Shivers Sr.

Suriving are three sons, James Lee Shivers of Baltimore, Samuel Gregory Shivers of Chester and Ernest Shivers of Winnsboro; two daughters, Catherine Mayfield of Rock Hill and Dianne Fair of Chester; her sister, Marie Coleman of Ypsilanti, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and her stepgrandson.

The family is at the home of Eduardo Merdock, 134 Bailey St.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Hazel Vaughn

LANCASTER COUNTY - Mr. Hazel Vaughn of 9344 Van Wyck Road died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at El Bethel AME Zion Church, with the Rev. C.J. Young officiating and the Revs. Deborah Waddell, Marion Wilson and R.A. Morrison assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A Lancaster County native, Mr. Vaughn was a faithful member of El Bethel AME Zion Church and attended Lancaster County public schools.

Surviving are his wife, Thelma Foster Vaughn of the home; three daughters, Dora Morrow of Jamaica, N.Y., Hazelene Crawford of Charlotte and Shirley Custis of Dumfries, Va.; his foster son that he reared, Eugene Vaughn of the home; his brother, Edward Vaughn of Charlotte; his sister, Rosa Mae Barber of Fort Mill; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.

Robinson Funeral Home is in charge.

Clara Williams

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Clara Coleman Williams, 89, of 363 Blanche Circle died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, with Dr. E.J. Garrison officiating. Burial will be at Weeping Mary Baptist Church cemetery.

Mrs. Williams was educated in the schools of Fairfield County. She was a retired domestic worker and a member of Rose of Sharon Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the senior choir and the missionary society. She was the widow of Turner "Doc" Williams.

Surviving are her daughter, Shirley Sessions of Charlotte; her brother, Amos Coleman of Charlotte; two sisters, Bessie C. Wynn of Baltimore, and Bessie B. Booker of Chester; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Parker Funeral Home and other times at 415 Frank St.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Parker Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

Richard Farias

LANCASTER - Mr. Richard Farias, 65, of 170 Blackmon Road died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at his home.

A Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine Catholic Church. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Born in Providence, R.I., Mr. Farias was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired truck driver for Davol, Inc. He was a member of St. Catherine Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Frances Knight Farias; three sons, Gary Farias of Warwick, R.I., and Richard Farias and Kevin Farias, both of Lancaster; his daughter, Sharon Gallant of Cranston, R.I.; his mother, Adeline Rouge Farias of Providence; two brothers, James Farias and Russell Farias, both of Providence.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to St. Catherine Catholic Church, 720 West Meeting St., Lancaster, SC 29720.

John Simril

CHESTER - Mr. John William Simril, 84, of 106 Shamrock Drive died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at Medowhaven Rehabilitation and Specialty Care.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery with Dr. Joe Brooks officiating.

Born in York County, Mr. Simril was a graduate of Oakley Hall High School and an Army/Air Force veteran of World War II. He was in banking for 50 years and was president of Commercial Bank prior to its merger with American Bank and Trust Co. He retired as city executive of First Citizens Bank. He served on the board of Chester County Natural Gas Authority for 26 years and the Catawba Regional Development Corp. for 10 years. He was past president of the Chester County Chamber of Commerce and had served on the board of directors of the S.C. Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of Purity Presbyterian Church since 1933 and served as a deacon and elder for 60 years.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret S. Simril; his son, William S. Simril of Marietta, Ga.; his daughter, Lane Stogner of Hartsville; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorials may be made to Purity Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 278, Chester, SC 29706.

Emmiett Clinton

YORK - Mr. Emmiett Marion Clinton, 62, of 609 E. Liberty St. in York died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York, with the Rev. Eddie Usher officiating.

Mr. Clinton was a retired textile worker with Springs Mills.

Surviving are four brothers, Phillip Clinton, Jimmy Clinton, Ricky Clinton and Randy Clinton all of York; and four sisters, Debbie Black of Clover and Connie Clinton, Retha Smart and Carolyn White, all of York.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at York Funeral Home.

Sharon Helms

LANCASTER - Mrs. Sharon Ann Adams Helms, 43, of 1649 Home Circle died Sunday, Feb. 22, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at High Point Freewill Baptist Church, with the Revs. Stuart Snow and Curtis Cameron officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Born in Lancaster, Mrs. Helms was employed by B.C. Moore and Sons department store and was a member of High Point Freewill Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Dennis Calvin Helms; her parents, John Evans and Mary Lee Lathan Adams of Lancaster; two brothers, John "Bennie" Adams of York and Timothy M. Adams of Lancaster; and 58 nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Hartley Funeral Home.

Raymond Hollis

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Raymond Clyde "Toad" Hollis, 84, of 212 Chester Ave. died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at Tanglewood Health Care Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Rev. Darrell Twitty officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Born in Great Falls, Mr. Hollis was the former manager of Republic Golf Course. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and attended Great Falls public schools.

He was a member of the Professional Golfers Association and was instrumental in building the clubhouse at the golf course. He was greens superintendent at the Lancaster Golf Course for 10 years. He was a member of Great Falls Masonic Lodge No. 277.

Surviving are his wife, Melvenia Byrd Hollis; his daughter, June Brewer of Rock Hill; two sisters, Clyde Mobley of Great Falls and Louise Traywick of Dillon; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

Ethel Kelly

CLOVER - Miss Ethel Lee Kelly, 45, of 744 Guinn St. died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in York, with the Rev. George McCoy officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Miss Kelly was a member of Gold Hill Baptist Church in York.

Surviving is her aunt and legal guardian, Bessie Pitts of the home.
