Harley Scott
ROCK HILL - Mr. Harley Scott, 78, died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at his home.
His ashes will be dispersed in a private ceremony at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church in Concord, N.C.
Born in Kannapolis, N.C., Mr. Scott graduated from Duke University in 1942. He served four years in the Army during World War II and finished as a captain. He received his doctorate in psychology from Duke in 1953. Scott moved to Rock Hill in 1953 to be psychology department chairman at Winthrop College. He was chairman of the department for 19 years. He resigned from his position as chairman and returned to full-time teaching in 1972. He taught until his retirement in 1983. Scott did psychological evaluation for disabilities determination for the S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation Department. He also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, the Rock Hill Human Relations Council, the York County Mental Health Association, Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross and the Museum of York County. He was past president of the Piedmont Archaeological Society. He was past president of the
South Carolina Psychological Association and was on the licensing board many years. He also was on the National Science Foundation board and the American Psychological Association board.
Surviving are Scott's wife, Carol Seeley Scott; three sons, Mike Scott of Roswell, Ga., David Scott and John Scott of Rock Hill; two daughters, Elisabeth Scott of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Sally Mintz of Fort Mill; his brother, Sam Scott of Asheville, N.C.; two sisters, K. Lee Wright of Asheville, N.C., and Anna Ruth Hook of Rock Hill; and nine grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to York County American Red Cross, local disaster relief fund, 200 Piedmont Blvd., Rock Hill, SC 29732.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Johnson Hall at Winthrop University.

Cornelius Crosby
ELIZABETH, N.J. - Mr. Cornelius Crosby, formerly of Rock Hill, died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998.
A memorial service will be 5 p.m. Friday in
New Jersey. Burial also will be in
New Jersey.
Mr. Crosby attended Emmett Scott High School in Rock Hill and was a former member of the Rock Grove AME Zion Church. Surviving are his wife, Fannie Durham Crosby; five sisters, Mildred Adams, Leena Porter and Juanita Barnett, all of Rock Hill, Alberta Crosby of Rockville Center,
N.Y., and Emma Crosby of Hempstead,
N.Y.; four brothers, Elliott Smith, T.J. Smith, Allen Crosby, and Samuel Crosby, all of Rock Hill; his grandchild; and his great-grandchild.

Horace Davis
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mr. Horace W. "Hobo" Davis, 57, of 2626 6th St. N.E. died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Providence Hospital.
The funeral will be 7 tonight at New Fellowship Christian Community Church in
Washington, D.C. Burial will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.
Born in Centerville, N.C., Mr. Davis was employed as a longshoreman.
Surviving are his wife, Dora Bradley Davis of
Washington, D.C.; two sons, Antonio M. Davis of Baltimore and Horace Davis Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; two daughters, Elder Debra Hunter of Reston, Va., and Ernestine Cotton of Rocky Mount, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7 tonight before the funeral.
The body may be viewed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Parker Funeral Home.

Eugene Fries
LANCASTER - Mr. Eugene Albert Fries, 72, of 2078 Friars Court died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine Catholic Church, with Father Thomas Morrison officiating. Burial was at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Rahway, N.J.
Born in Newark, N.J., Mr. Fries was retired from the sheriff's department of Newark and was employed at the Lancaster Golf Course.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Jean Jones Fries; two daughters, Mary Kay Fries of San Francisco and Donna Jean Emmons of Freehill, N.J.; three stepsons, David F. Connely of Palm Coast, Fla., Dwayne Connely of Long Beach, N.J., and Dennis Connely of Tinton Falls, N.J.; four stepdaughters, Deborah Merker of Monroe, N.C., Lorie Deering of Wayland, Mich., Carol Judge of Orlando, Fla., and Dorothy Connely of Palm Coast, Fla.; and 14 grandchildren.

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Edna T. Gardner, 96, of 2117 Bryan Court died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Ebenezer Nursing Home.
A graveside service will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. James Carter officiating.
Born in York County, Mrs. Gardner was formerly employed at Lowenstein and retired from Springs Industries after 45 years of service. She was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church.
Surviving is her daughter, Margaret Williams of Rock Hill.

LANCASTER - Mrs. Evelyn Reeves Horton, 84, of the Presbyterian Home in Summerville died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, in Clemson.
A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday at West Side Cemetery, with the Rev. Julian Ford officiating.
Born in Cottageville, Mrs. Horton was a member of Summerville Presbyterian Church. She was formerly of Pendleton and a member of Pendleton Presbyterian Church. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and did graduate studies at
Iowa State University. She was a retired public school teacher and taught in the Charleston County schools for 20 years. She retired from the Pickens County school system.
Surviving are her husband, Paul Mackey Horton Sr. of Charleston; three sons, Paul M. Horton Jr. of Clemson, William L. B. Horton of Charleston and M. Dan Horton of Summerville; her brother, John F. Reeves Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

YORK - Mr. Leonard Ross Jones Sr., 55, of 1705 Davis Farm Road died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A York County native, Mr. Ross was operations director at Town & Country Toyota in Charlotte. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Jean Husky Jones of the home; his son, Leonard R. Jones Jr. of York; two daughters, Melanie Lynn Jones Myers and Sheri Annette Jones, both of York; and his grandchild.

YORK - Ms. Bonita McCoy, 31, of 56 McClain St. died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998.
The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Hill Street Church of God, with the Rev. Michael Johnson officiating and the Revs. Johnnie Mae McCoy, Blanche Jamison and William McClain assisting. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.
Ms. McCoy was a member of the Hill Street Church of God and was employed as a spinner at A&E Manufacturing in Gastonia.
Surviving are her fiancé, Napoleon Wade of York; two sons, Napoleon Montex McCoy and Shermar Latrel Wade, both of the home; her mother, Ernestine McCoy of the home; her great aunt who helped rear her, Johnnie Mae McCoy of the home; seven brothers, Gary McCoy of the home, David Lee Ellison of Florence, John Allison of Salisbury, N.C., Ricky Lane Allison of York, Gary "Bo" McCoy of Charlotte; and Ricky Sherman and Leroy Sherman, both of Conway; six sisters, Shelia E. Benjamin, Mary E. Sherer and Loretta Byers, all of York, Lisa S. Moore of Conway, Audrey Dulin of Greenwood, and Gertrude Walker of Clover; her paternal grandmother, Thelma Barber of Winston-Salem, N.C.; her maternal grandmother, Lilly McCoy of

Virginia McDaniel
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Virginia McKnight McDaniel, 81, of 795 Cannon Drive died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gary Roberts officiating and the Rev. Calvin Morrow assisting. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.
A Cherokee County native, Mrs. McDaniel lived in Rock Hill for more than 59 years and was a longtime member of New Covenant Baptist Church. She worked as a weaver at Arcade Mills for more than 30 years. She was the widow of Broadus McDaniel.
Surviving are her son, Roy McDaniel of Rock Hill; two daughters, Joyce Langley and Kathleen Tucker, both of Rock Hill; her sister, Zuyler McDaniel of Rock Hill; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Ruth McManus
LANCASTER - Mrs. Ruth Funderburk McManus, 88, of White Oak Manor died Thursday, Jan. 22, 1998.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Springhill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Greg Towler officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
Born in Union County, Mrs. McManus was retired from the Lancaster County School system, where she worked in the Buford High School cafeteria. She was a member of Springhill Baptist Church. She was the widow of Bunyan Creth McManus.
Surviving are her son, Robert L. McManus of Lancaster; her brother, Judson L. Funderburk Jr. of Lancaster; her sister, Margurite "Polly" F. Robinson of Lancaster; and two grandchildren.

WESTVILLE - Mr. Claude Benjamin Owens, 82, of 2799 Kershaw Highway died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998, at Kershaw County Medical Center.

Born in Westville, Mr. Owens was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and was a painter.
Surviving are his son, John H. Owens of Columbia; two daughters, Shirley Lucas of North Augusta, and Ada O. Smith of Westville; his sister, Irene O. Ray of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

George Peterson
CHESTER - Mr. George Peterson, 54, of 590 Belt Line Road died Monday, Jan. 19, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Black Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ricky Daniels officiating and the Rev. Wilson assisting. Burial will at the church cemetery.
A Chester native, Mr. Peterson was a member of Black Rock Baptist Church hymn choir and gospel choir. He was a member of the AP&B Society. He was educated in Chester County public schools.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Peterson of Chester; his daughter, Anngeanett Lightner of Spartanburg; his brother, Willie Peterson of Vaxhall, N.J.; three sisters, Hattie P. Grey, and Shirley P. Caldwell, both of Chester, and Bernice P. Blair of Charlotte; two grandchildren; and his special friend, Rosalind Terry of Chester.
The family is at the home of Mrs. Hattie P. Gray, 119 Elizabeth St.
