BETHUNE — Funeral services for Ava Shaw Gardner, 84, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 1, 2005, at Bethel United Methodist Church. The Revs. Larry Brown and Ed Davidson will officiate, with burial in Bethany Cemetery directed by Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, December 31, 2004, from 4-6 p.m. at the Brown residence, 605 Walton Street, Bethune, SC. Memorials may be made to the Bethel United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Gardner, widow of John Jacob Little and Barr H. Gardner, Jr., died Tuesday, December 28, 2004. Born in Bethune, SC, she was a daughter of the late Lucas Payton and Effie Reeves Shaw. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, the Bethune Woman’s Club, and was an avid bridge player. She was associated with the family-run Bethune IGA.
Surviving are her son and daughter-in-law, Barr H. and Kathy W. Gardner, III of Chapin, SC; daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Merrill Brown of Bethune, SC; grandchildren, Lee S. Aiken, Michael A. Brown, Barr Harris Gardner, IV. She was preceded in death by her sister Doris Shaw Elliott.

Carolyn Thames
HOUSTON, Texas — Carolyn Fant Thames passed away December 27, 2004, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Silverstreet, South Carolina on May 13, 1942, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Maffett Fant, Sr.
Mrs. Thames is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Elizabeth DuBose Fant.
She is survived by her husband, Chester Allen Thames, Jr.; sister, Edna Earle Fant Dowd; brother-in-law, Rev. H. Wynan Dowd; brother, Thomas Maffett Fant, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Shirley Fant and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Thames was a registered nurse and worked in Atlanta, Ga., and Houston, Texas . In 1990, she returned to school and completed a degree in English and Psychology. She was a gardening and sports enthusiast; especially tennis and basketball. She was a member of Memorial Drive Lutheran Church and was active in the Stephen’s Ministry Program.
The family will receive visitors Wednesday December 29, 2004, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Earthman’s Hunter’s Creek, 8303 Katy Freeway.
Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday December 30, 2004, at Memorial Drive Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. A.R. “Sam” Koenning officiating. Interment will follow in Glenwood Cemetery at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005.

COLUMBIA — Mrs. Janie Caulder Owens, 69, widow of Lloyd Owens, died Tuesday in a Columbia hospital.
Funeral services will be 3:00 p.m. Thursday in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Hemingway, with visitation 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mrs. Owens was born in Olanta, a daughter of Raymond L. and Anna Boyd Welch Caulder. She was a graduate of Sherwood High School and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include her children: Grady (Melinda) Owens of Johnsonville and Larry (Kathy) Joye of Hemingway; her sisters: Betty (Fletcher) McDuffie of Columbia, Martha (Bill) Thomas of Manning, and Valorie (Joe) Burrows of Elgin; 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Owens was predeceased by a son, J.W. Owens; grandson, Kirk Owens; brother, Ray Caulder.
