Bruce T. Rush
FORT MILL -- Bruce T. Rush, 54, formerly of Myrtle Beach, died Sept. 22, 2003, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A son of Bert and Milwee Rush of Camden, he was born in Camden on Nov. 15, 1946. After graduating from Camden High School in 1965, he went to Clemson University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969 and later a master of recreation and park administra-
tion in 1974. He was a First Lieutenant in the US Army and served as an infantry advisor in Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star in 1971.
Married to Toni Higgins of Great Falls in 1970, Mr. Rush was completing a Master's degree at Clemson when he was named general manager of Springmaid Beach in Myrtle Beach in 1974. During his tenure, the privately owned beach facility, originally built by Springs Industries for its employees, grew from 184 guestrooms to 486 today. Rush oversaw the construction of the Springmaid Pier, a 33,000 square foot conference center, two three-story buildings, high-rise units and a renovated cafeteria. He also helped to create the Elderhostel program at Springmaid Beach and welcomed the public and community to the facility.
It was during this period that the Rush's two sons were born, Jason Henry Rush 27, of San Diego; and Ryan Harvey Rush, 20, a student at Horry Georgetown Technical College in Myrtle Beach.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Mr. Rush emerged as a community leader in the Grand Strand in activities revolving around the First Presbyterian Church and the Horry County Board of Education, on which he served for from 1991-1996. He was also a member of the Myrtle Beach Rotary Club, and served as chairman of Horry County's Tax Accommodations Committee.
At First Presbyterian he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher, Pulpit Search Committee and Long Range Planning committee. According to long-time friend Cecil Brandon of Myrtle Beach, Bruce "loved the Lord and served Him diligently, through devotion to his family, his friends and his churchHe was a pillar you could always count on, lean on and like to hang around." Said fellow Presbyterian and friend John Stewart of Myrtle Beach, "he was the finest man I've ever known."
First Presbyterian minister Dr. Robert Wilkes said that "anyone who ever had the opportunity to know Bruce recognized his ability to always speak in a loving and kind way; he was not afraid to dream great dreams or to fail; he understood his task of planting trees today and looking down the road to tomorrow."
In January 1997, Mr. Rush was named president and CEO of Leroy Springs and Company in Fort Mill, where he was subsequently elected to the Company's Board of Directors. His commitment to that community also revolved around his family, church and the company. He was a member of Unity Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and Sunday school teacher.
In Fort Mill, he was a board member of the Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, Catawba River Task Force, Nation Ford Land Trust and Chamber of Commerce. He served on the York County Accommodations Tax Commission, Success by Six and United Way. As a member of the Fort Mill Rotary Club he was named a Paul Harris Fellow and was the Fort Mill Rotarian of the Year in 1999. Additionally, he was affiliated with Friends of Anne Springs Close Greenway, Good Folks and Boys and Girls Clubs.
He was also a member of the National Recreation and Park Association, South Carolina Recreation and Park Association and the American Institute of Park Executives.
In addition to his parents, wife Toni and sons Jason and Ryan, Mr. Rush is survived by three brothers, Matt Rush of Camden, Barry Rush of Orlando, FL., and Scott Rush of Mount Pleasant, and one sister Feryl Rush Holley of Alton, Mo.
