Astrid Allen
GEORGETOWN -- Astrid Mattson Shelton Allen, 81, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at home.
She was born Jan. 27, 1921, in Bogalusa, La., a daughter of the late Hjalmar Mattson and Anna Victoria Hultman Mattson.
She grew up in Bogalusa and attended secretarial school.
She moved to Georgetown in 1937. She was a retired employee of International Paper Co. She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and also attended First Baptist Church. She was a member of the "Young as Ever" group at the Baptist Church and "TAG" at the Lutheran Church. She was the widow of Richard H. Shelton Jr. and Joseph Ross "Tony" Allen.
Survivors include a son, Richard H. Shelton III and his wife, Sharon, of Simpsonville; a daughter, Teresa Allen Harter and her husband, Mark, of Georgetown; a stepdaughter, Deanna Allen Saylor and her husband, Bill, of Wrightsville Beach, N.C.; three grandchildren, Lisa Fiore of Birmingham, Ala., and Allen Marcus Harter and Travis Ross Harter, both of Georgetown; two step-grandchildren, Ben Harris and Holly Raynor, both of Wilmington, N.C.; and two nieces, Marilyn Sinclair of Georgetown and Linda Player of Litchfield Beach.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church. The Rev. Ted A. Sherrell will officiate. Burial will be in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

Clarence Alston Jr.
BALTIMORE -- Clarence Alston Jr. died Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center in Baltimore.
He was born April 9, 1950, in Georgetown, a son of the late Lille Bell Ford Alston and the late Clarence Alston Sr.
He graduated from Choppee High School in Georgetown and was a disabled brick mason.
Survivors include two children, Maurice Washington and Marian Wearing, both of New Haven, Conn.; a brother, Willie James Alston of Georgetown; six sisters, Barbara Alston Greene and Vervatine Alston Reid of Georgetown, Vernell Alston Bodley of Randallstown, Md., Louretta Alston Howze of Charlotte, N.C., Ruby Alston Stewart of North Augusta and A. Jeanetta Alston Fleming of Upper Marlboro, Md.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Bethel AME Church in the Plantersville community of Georgetown County. Burial will be in Bethel Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Elizabeth Babiak
SURFSIDE BEACH -- Elizabeth Babiak, 82, of Wagon Wheel Lane, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.
She was a daughter of the late Matthew and Mary Pillar Basista.
She attended St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Daniel Babiak and his wife, Sally, of Surfside Beach; two sisters, Mildred Unger and Josephine Birko; three grandchildren, Scott Babiak, Debra Babiak and Cindy Gonzalez; and a sister-in-law, Helen Wisler.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert S. Babiak; and three sisters, Margaret Shusta, Helen Skurla and Ann Swearman.
Services will be private. Grand Strand Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge.

Ruth C. Baker
AYNOR -- Ruth Cannon Baker, 89, died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Loris Community Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, James William "JW" Baker and his wife, Angelee, and Malcolm Baker and his wife, Janice, all of Aynor; a daughter, Virgie Ivadeen Allen and her husband, Smithy, of Aynor; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. at Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Valley Forge Baptist Church. The Rev. J.T. Adams and the Rev. Tommy Fairfax will officiate. Burial will be in Bayboro Baptist Church Cemetery.
Timothy Carter
FORK -- Timothy Carter, 59, died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Marion County Medical Center after an illness.
He was born in Dillon County, a son of the late Leroy and Queenie Prevatte Carter.
Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Arnel and her husband, Bruce, of Myrtle Beach; two sisters, Jean Norman of Mullins and Carolyn Goodyear of Fairmont, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Madison Arnel.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Cook Funeral Home of Lake View.
A private funeral will be at a later date.
Georgie Cochran
GEORGETOWN -- Georgie Lusinda Grayson Cochran, 95, widow of Howard Smith Cochran, died Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 24, 1907, in Sunshine Valley, N.C., a daughter of George Washington Grayson and Alice Gurlay Grayson Melton.
She was a manager of Wamsetta Knitting Mills Outlet Store and a member of the First Methodist Church in Morganton, N.C.
She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara C. Joyner of Georgetown; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 6 tonight at the Herbert Memorial United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dennis Mardis will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Burke Memorial Park in Morganton.
Visitation will follow in the church fellowship hall.
