Lawrence H. Thompson
WHITEVILLE, N.C. — Lawrence Hubert Thompson, 65, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002.
He was born in Columbus County, a son of Gladys Wright Thompson of Whiteville and the late Lawrence Thompson.
He was the member of Trinity Baptist Church and formerly served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He retired as assistant superintendent of the paper mill of International Paper Co. He owned Thompson Landscape & Construction.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Katie Smith Thompson; a son, John L. Thompson and his wife, Angela of Hallsboro, N.C.; a daughter, Christy L. Skidmore and her husband, Ray, of Little River; two brothers, Donald Thompson of Tabor City, N.C., and Fred Thompson of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters, Alene Mercer of Lake Waccamaw, N.C., and Alease Smith of Whiteville; and three grandchildren, Savannah Lane, Laura Blair Thompson and Garrett Thompson.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Peacock's Chapel in The Pines.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church. The Rev. Stephen Bailey will officiate.
Burial will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery.
Peacock Funeral Home of Whiteville is in charge.

MYRTLE BEACH — Robert Lee Turner, 65, of Caropines, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at home.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Goldfinch Funeral Home, beach chapel.
Eliza A. Wilson
MULLINS — Eliza Ann Wilson died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Honorage Nursing Center of Florence.
Arrangements will be announced by Troy Funeral Home of Mullins.
James D. Belk
CONWAY — James Doster Belk, 88, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Pinedale Residential Center in Georgetown.
He was born in Union County, N.C., a son of the late Stafford M. and Nancy McManus Belk.
He was a member of Kingston Presbyterian Church and educated in Union County Schools. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. in South Carolina and later moved to Georgetown, where he was employed with the International Paper Co. for 37 years and was a member of the Pine Tree Club and the Quarter Century Club. He retired as assistant superintendent of paper machines.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and retired as chief petty officer in the Naval Reserves, where he served as a recruiting officer in Georgetown. After retiring, he moved to Conway and was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 40.
He was predeceased by brothers Archie Belk and George Belk; and sisters Margie Belk, Lula Cauthen and Pauline Belk.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Evelyn A. Belk of Conway; two daughters, Felicitia B. Cameron and her husband, Charlie, of Pawleys Island and Terrace B. Cook of Surfside Beach; two brothers, Stafford Belk of Rock Hill and Bob Belk of Sumter; one sister, Agnes Wolfe of Monroe, N.C.; six granddaughters; two grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at Kingston Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Don Stiens and the Rev. Bruce Hall will officiate. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum and will be directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Goldfinch Funeral Home, beach chapel.

Florence G. Bortel
MYRTLE BEACH — Florence G. Bortel, 88, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Conway Hospital.
She was born May 8, 1914, in Chicago, a daughter of the late James W. and Delia M. Duane Prosser.
She made her home in Michigan City, Ind., for 84 years prior to moving to the area.
Survivors include her son, James "Jim" Bortel of Myrtle Beach; and her grandchildren, Jennifer L. Bortel and Joan L. Green.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at McMillan-Small Funeral Home in Myrtle Beach.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Michigan City.
David Brown
GEORGETOWN — David Brown, 66, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002.

French Collins
MYRTLE BEACH — French Collins, 81, died Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2002, at Conway Hospital after an illness.
He was born in Galivants Ferry, a son of the late Kirby Marvin and Mattie Jane Johnson Collins.
He was a member and former deacon of Sweetwater Branch Baptist Church. He was a member of the Conway Masonic Lodge No. 65 AFM and a member of the Omar Temple of the Shrine. He contributed 42 years of service to Horry County as a member of the Horry County board of commissioners, a road supervisor and a member of the Loris, Aynor and Horry County police departments.
He was predeceased by a son, Richard French Collins; two sisters, Mary Drew and Isla Jenerette; his first wife, Kizzie P. Collins; and his second wife, Myrtle T. Collins.
Survivors include one son, Tony G. Collins and his wife, Janet of Conway; two daughters, Bonnie C. Clardy of Myrtle Beach and Carolyn C. Bailey and her husband, Philip, of Florence; one brother, Hagood Collins of Burlington, N.C.; six grandchildren, Joe Clardy Jr., Ann Steed, Phil Bailey, Patrick Bailey, Hunter Collins and Hannah Collins; and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Sweetwater Branch Baptist Church. The Rev. Allen Hall, the Rev. Bill Thompson, the Rev. Mack Hutson and the Rev. Walter Hardee will officiate. Entombment will follow in Hillcrest Mausoleum and will be directed by Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
