Carrie W. Hooks

BRITTONS NECK — Carrie Woodberry Hooks, 69, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at home after an illness.

She was born June 17, 1933, in Marion County, a daughter of the late Miley Furman Woodberry and Sadie Cribb Woodberry.

She was a homemaker and a member of Nebo Baptist Church.

Survivors include two grandchildren, Cameron Brett Williams and Conli Erin Williams, both of Brittons Neck; a brother, Liston Woodberry and his wife, Julie, of Marion; and three sisters, Jay W. Atkinson and her husband, Bennie, of Brittons Neck, Anne W. Lovell of Brittons Neck and Nadine W. Richardson and her husband, Morris, of Marion.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph Perlie Stevens; her second husband, Paul Franklin Hooks; and her daughter, Dreva Stevens Williams.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at the Hooks' home at 7030 S.C. 908, Brittons Neck.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Norman Abernathy will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Nebo Baptist Church, 6411 S.C. 908, Brittons Neck, SC 29546.

George W. Howland Jr.

MYRTLE BEACH — George W. Howland Jr., 83, of Carolina Forest, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

He was born May 17, 1919, in Long Branch, N.J., a son of the late George W. and Margaret Leslie Howland.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy E. Howland in 1979.

He graduated from Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., in civil engineering. He was a licensed professional engineer in New Jersey and South Carolina. He served during World War II as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers in European Theater of Operations and received five battle stars and a Bronze Star Medal.

He moved to Myrtle Beach from New Jersey in 1972. He was the president of Jesse A. Howland and Sons Inc., specializing in general construction and beach protection work. He worked for Dargan Construction Co. and was the first city engineer and director of Public Works for the city of Myrtle Beach. He was a former member of the American Society of Civil Engineers,
the National Society of Professional Engineers and American Society of Military Engineers.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a former member of the Dunes Golf and Beach Club and Myrtlewood Golf Course. He retired in 1981.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Tarte Howland, of Myrtle Beach; two sons, George W. Howland III of Converse, Texas, and Jeff Howland and his wife, Lynn, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five daughters, Carol Dellecker and her husband, Ray, of Sammomish, Wash., Diane Rainka and her husband, Ray, of West Linn, Ore., Holly Watts and her husband, Bruce, of Pawleys Island, Kelly Cochran, and her husband, Vann, of Lexington, and Kris Bellamy, and her husband, Keith, of Little River; a brother, Frank Howland of Allentown, Pa.; one sister, Barbara Semran of Lyman; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a special cousin, Jesse Howland of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at McMillan-Small Funeral Home of Myrtle Beach. The Rev. Robert Wilkes will officiate. Burial will be in Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery.

Mary E. Lilly

MYRTLE BEACH — Mary Edna Lilly, 65, of Ninth Avenue South, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002, at home after an illness.

She was born in Horry County, a daughter of the late Ralph and Mary Coates Johnson. She retired from the Horry County Tax Assessor's Office and will be loved and missed by all.

Survivors include one daughter, Joyce Ann Lilly, of Myrtle Beach; three sons, Jimmy Lilly, Larry Lilly and his wife, Vikki, and Randy Lilly and his wife, Sharon, all of Conway; three brothers, Aubrey Johnson and Paul Johnson, both of Nichols, and Dennis Johnson of Mullins; five sisters, Corrine Mincey, Helen Gerald, Juanita Johnson, Wanda Strickland and Betty Gerald, all of Nichols; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Hillcrest Cemetery. The Rev. Lamar Boulware will officiate.

Goldfinch Funeral Home, Conway chapel, is in charge.

Donald F. McCandlish

MYRTLE BEACH — Donald F. McCandlish, 73, died Monday, Oct. 7, 2002.

Survivors include his wife, Winnie A. McCandlish; and a son, Danny J. McCandlish of Battle Creek, Mich.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 tonight at Moose Lodge No. 1959 at 970 Burcale Road.

McMillan-Small Funeral Home of Myrtle Beach is in charge.

William R. Newbury

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — William Robert Newbury, 83, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach.

He was born Dec. 8, 1918, in New London, Conn., a son of the late Frank Chester Newbury and Florence Woolhead Newbury. He was a graduate of the Bulkley Day School in New London and Rider University in New Jersey.

He served as captain with the Third Army under Gen. George Patton during World War II and retired from the reserves with the rank of lieutenant colonel. He also had a business career in sales management with A.M. Corp. He was an active member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

He was predeceased by his oldest son, Robert Craig Newbury.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Muriel Gregg Newbury; his children, David William Newbury of Rochester, N.Y., Nathan Christopher Newbury of Myrtle Beach and Claire Newbury Haines of Rochester; and his grandchildren, Steven Gregory Haines and Diane Elizabeth Haines.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephens Episcopal Church. The Rev. Wilmot T. Merchant II will officiate.

Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.

Memorials may be made to St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 813 Townsend Road, North Myrtle Beach, SC 29572.

Tina M. Pack

GEORGETOWN — Tina M. Pack, 25, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2002, at the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital in Charleston.

She was born May 11, 1977, in Mullins, a daughter of Jerry Lynn Singletary and Marilyn Simmons Singletary Picklesimer.

She was employed by Atlantic Eye Associates of Murrells Inlet. She was a graduate of Georgetown High School and was of the Baptist faith.

She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Preston Picklesimer, in 1991.

Survivors include her companion, Kevin Vause of Georgetown, a daughter, Meagan Michelle Vause of Georgetown; her mother and stepfather, Clyde Picklesimer, of Georgetown; her father and stepmother, Patty Singletary of Tabor City, N.C.; a brother, Jim Singletary, of Tabor City; a sister, Stephanie Singletary, of Tabor City; her maternal grandparents, James and Mildred Simmons of Loris; her paternal grandmother, Edna Singletary of Tabor City; and her stepgrandparents, Bob and Jean Picklesimer of Dayton, Ohio, and Mr. and Mrs. Bobbie Norris of Tabor City.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Georgetown Community Church. The Rev. Chris Daigle will officiate. Burial will be in Pennyroyal Memorial Gardens.

Graham Funeral Home of Georgetown is in charge.
