Gorden F. DeFosset
PAWLEYS ISLAND — Gorden Franklin DeFosset died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002.
He was born March 25, 1913, in Cincinnati, a son of the late Joseph and Alice Sandman DeFosset.
He attended East Bond Hill Elementary School and Hughes High School. He graduated from Denison University, where he was a member of the SAE fraternity. He earned a law degree from The University of Cincinnati and was admitted to the bar in Ohio, Kentucky and South Carolina. He was an associate of all federal courts and presented in front of the Supreme Court.
He was a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. As an intelligence officer, he was part of the Enigma cryptanalysis project and was stationed in London and Paris.
Before his retirement to South Carolina in 1973, he practiced tax law with his father at DeFosset and DeFosset. When his father retired, he continued his practice with Brumleve, Decamp and Wood. He was president of the Cincinnati Travelers Aid Society and on the board of the Cincinnati Street Railway Co.
He was a world traveler. Paris was his favorite city. He was an avid hunter and golfer and loved to tell the story of playing golf with Bing Crosby at St. Andrews.
Survivors include his wife, Madge Chase DeFosset; two daughters, Michelle DeFosset and Suzi Prindle; a son, Gorden Defosset; five grandchildren, Whitney Elizabeth Axley, Michelle Pogue Plaisance, Sean Pogue, Sara Jane DeFosset and Amelia Rose DeFosset; a great-granddaughter, Abigail Michelle Plaisance; two stepchildren, Sanborn Chase and Sandra Chase Buchan; five stepgrandchildren, Kloo and Sandra Chase, Chase Barnard and James and Sanborn Buchan; and a stepgreat-grandchild, Zachary Barnard.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Dale Bartlett DeFosset; a daughter, Dale DeFosset Axley; and a granddaughter, Langley Axley.
A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. today at The Lakes at Litchfield.

EFFINGHAM — Susan Alford Dillon, 56, of 3615 Ward Road, died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at home after an illness.
She was born Aug. 18, 1945.
She was formerly employed by Harwell Law Firm and with the Florence County Treasurer's Office.
Survivors include her husband, Lacy Henry Dillon; her father, Hopkin Alford of Wilmington, N.C.; her stepmother, Martha Alford of Wilmington; a son, William "Billy" Dillon and his wife, Jennifer, of Effingham; a daughter, Tracy Sealey and her husband, Paul, of Florence; a stepdaughter, Martha Marie Davis of Hilton Head; two sisters, Gloria Floyd of Florence and Melissa "Lissa" McFarlan of Myrtle Beach; three grandchildren, Caroline Sealey and Dillon Sealey, both of Florence, and Matthew Dillon of Effingham.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home in Florence.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Florence Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Florence.

MYRTLE BEACH — Elsie F. Dowling, 84, of North Ocean Boulevard, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center.

WILLIAMSTON, N.C. — David R. Edmondson, 57, of Williamston, N.C., died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, at home after an illness.

William W. Hemingway
LORIS — William Wayne Hemingway, 35, of Hemingway Road, died Saturday, Jan 19, 2002, at Loris Community Hospital after an illness.
He was a son of J.E. Hemingway and the late Pearlene Gore Hemingway.
He was a graduate of Loris High School. He was a member of Cedar Branch Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to his father of Loris, include three sons, Christopher, Gregory and Kendrick Green, all of Tabor City, N.C.; five sisters, Vercille Woods, Diane Crosland, Jean Stanley, Tina Hemingway and Tiffany Johnson, all of South Carolina; five brothers, Willie James "Buddy" Hemingway, Wadell Hemingway, Roy L. Hemingway, Glendell Hemingway and Donald Everette Hemingway, all of South Carolina; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; three aunts; and three uncles.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Cedar Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

LORIS — Emily Gale Neal, 50, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at home.
Survivors include a daughter, Tonsheka Neal; a granddaughter; two sisters; a brother; and other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Rona Missionary Baptist Church.
The Rev. A.B. Nichols will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Rona Cemetery.
