Roy Sullivan
Roy Sullivan, 65, of Summerton, died Monday at his home.
Mr. Sullivan was born in Jackson County, Ala., a son of the late Woodard Sullivan and Ollie Maynor Sullivan. He was a retired lineman.
Survivors are his wife, Shirley Jean Martin Sullivan of the home; daughters, Karen Varnes of Elloree and Sandra Moore of Lugoff; son, Rodney Sullivan of Savannah, Ga.; sisters, Nancy Machen of Hollywood, Ala., and Sally Roden of Pisgah, Ala.; brothers, Worth Sullivan of Scottsboro, Ala., Dea Sullivan of Pisgah, Ala., and Floyd Sullivan of St. Louis; grandchildren, Jessica Dickson, Tamra Varnes and Aron Michael Varnes, all of Elloree, Donald Dickson of Orangeburg, Krystal Dickson of Holly Hill and Jarrod Dickson of Lugoff; stepchildren, Shelia Watkins and Jimmy Joe Martin, both of Goose Creek, Sherry Williams of Orangeburg, Frankie Gray and Keith Gray, both of Grover; seven great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 9, 2005, in the Avinger Funeral Home Chapel, Holly Hill with the Rev. Larry Kennedy and the Rev. Gene Ball officiating.
Burial followed in the Holly Hill Cemetery.

Johnny L. Welch
Johnny L. Welch, 46, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, in a Sumter hospital, following an illness.
Mr. Welch was born in Clarendon County, a son of John William and Juanita Brown Welch. He was a graduate of Salem High School and attended Pine Dale P. H. Church. He was a supervisor for Federal Mogul.
Survivors include his parents of Turbeville, one son, Johnny Lamar “Jay” Welch Jr. of Turbeville; two brothers, Rodney Welch and Chuck Welch, both of Turbeville, and one sister, Mrs. Renea Carter of Sumter.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 13, 2005, in the Pine Dale P. H. Church.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Lula Brown Baxley
McCOLL – Mrs. Lula “Pete” Brown Baxley, 82, widow of Colon Baxley Sr., died Wednesday, June 15, 2005,
Born in Horry County, she was the daughter of the late John and Rebecca Brown.
A homemaker, she was a member of Eastside Baptist Church and served as past president for the Ladies Auxiliary of the McColl VFW.
She is survived by a son, Colon (Toni) Baxley Jr, of Florence; two daughters, Libby Fowler of McColl and Jeannette (Tad) Reeser of Summerton; a brother, Jim Brown of Mesa, Ariz.; and five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at the Eastside Baptist Church.
Burial followed at Rogers Cemetery in McColl.

Thomas David III
Thomas David III, 43, died June 9, 2005, at Future Nursing Home, Baltimore, Md.
Born April 1, 1962, in Alcolu, he was a son of Thomas David Jr. and the late Rev. Edna Montgomery David. Thomas received his education in the Baltimore City public schools. Thomas gave his life to God when he joined St. John Freewill Baptist Church. He later moved his membership to Candlelight Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Rev. C. Simpson and the Rev. Sister M. Simpson, where he was a lifelong member. Thomas started working for Resnick Poultry in 1986 and remained there until he became ill.
Survivors include his father, Thomas David Jr. of Baltimore; two brothers, James (U.S. Army) and Dave David, both of Baltimore; two sisters, Deloris and Shirley David, both of Baltimore; two nieces; three nephews; six aunts; and two grandnephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 18, 2005, at Melina Presbyterian Church (USA), Gable, with the Rev. C. Hampton officiating.
Burial was in Melina Cemetery.

Richard McCall
Richard McCall, 70, husband of Nettie Grooms McCall, died Saturday, June 18, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born April 8, 1935, in Alcolu, he was a son of the late Andrew and Mattie Nichols McCall.
He was retired from Carolina Furniture and attended Clarendon Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of Alcolu; three brothers, Alex McCall of Sumter, Johnny and Wilbur McCall of Alcolu; and a sister, Mattie Margaret Logan of Alcolu.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Willie and R.J. McCall, and two sisters, Lougenia Logan and Katie Cales.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 21, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kevin Cribb officiating.
Burial followed in Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Alcolu.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Virginia Floyd Powell
Mrs. Virginia F. Powell, widow of Lonzie S. Powell, died on Sunday, June 19, 2005.
She was born in Conway on November 17, 1925, a daughter of the late Francis Marvin Floyd and Minnie Vaught Floyd.
Mrs. Powell was a 1942 graduate of Conway High School. She attended Winthrop College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree and her master’s degree in education from the University of
South Carolina, Columbia. She was an elementary school teacher in the Conway City School System for 32 years, retiring in 1980.
Mrs. Powell was a life long member of the First United Methodist Church of Conway. She was dedicated to God’s glory and active in her church, and demonstrated that love by her faithfulness in His service. She served on many church committees, taught Sunday school and served as Church Hostess for many years. Mrs. Powell had a deep concern for shut-ins within her community and served on the Caregivers Committee. In addition, she was Bereavement Chairperson for the church for many years. She was a member of the Family Fellowship Class and the Bessie Henry Circle.
Mrs. Powell is survived by one son, Bruce (Jane) Powell of Manning, S.C.; three sisters, Laura Sarvis of North Myrtle Beach, Annie Lou Spivey of Conway and Mary Alice Cox of Camden; four grandchildren, Jenny Williams of Bradenton, Fla., Natalie Cooper of Conway; and Collin and Caroline Powell, both of Manning; and two great-grandsons; Furman and Lance Cooper of Conway.
She was preceded in death by her only daughter Lannis Powell Jordan, who passed away in December 2002; and her husband, Lonzie S. Powell, who passed away in February 2002.
Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church of Conway on Wednesday, June 22, 2005, with the Revs. Carl Harris and Ben Barnett officiating the service.
Burial followed at Lakeside Cemetery.

Preston Leonard
Preston Leonard, 98, died Friday, June 9, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Feb. 8, 1908 in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late General Lee Leonard and Cammie Ann Brock Leonard.
He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Friendship AME Church. He was a security guard for many years.
Survivors include his niece, Ruth R. Leonard of Manning, and many other relatives.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 12, 2006, at Friendship AME Church in the Silver community of Summerton with the Rev. Dr. James Stukes, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

John M. Moore
Dr. John Marion Moore, 60, died Thursday, June 8, 2006, at his home in Manning.
Born Oct. 12, 1945, in Charlotte, N.C., he was a son of the late Marion “Manny” Moore and the late Louise Renfro Nichols Moore. He was a graduate of Wofford College and the Medical University of
South Carolina, and a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Manning.
Surviving are a daughter, Sudie Moore Clem and her husband, Chris, of Greenwood; two sons, John Marion Moore Jr. of Sumter and Thomas Renfro Moore of Greenwood; a sister, Verna M. Pinnix of Ramseur, N.C.; a brother, Joey Moore of Manning; two grandchildren, Bailey Nichols Moore and Sudie Elisabeth Clem.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 11, 2006, at the Presbyterian Church at Manning with the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes officiating.
Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Marion “Brother” Eadon Jr., Wayne Utley, Bob Tucker, Glenn Pilcher, Heyward Moore and Marion Pilcher.

Adell W. Rogers
LANCASTER, Pa. – Adell Witherspoon Rogers, 89, widow of Luther Rogers, died Friday, June 2, 2006, at Heart of Lancaster Hospital in Warwick, Pa.
Born July 4, 1916, in the Wilson section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Steven Witherspoon and Lizzie Pendergrass Witherspoon.
She attended the public schools of Clarendon County and accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age.
Survivors include seven sons, Louis (Vernell) Pompey and Willie James (Catherine) Pompey, all of Greeleyville, Lee Edward (Lois) Pompey of Moncks Corner, Freddie (Estell) Pompey, Henry (Ida) Pompey, General Lee (Renee) Pompey and James (Lucretia) Rogers, all of Lancaster, Pa.; four daughters, Julia (Simon) Wallace, Sarah (Mack) Robinson and Lillian (Rovry) Brown, all of Lancaster, Pa., and Sylinda (Paul) Murray of Greeleyville; a sister, Daisy Sweat of Manning; and many grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Thelma Bradshaw.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 9, 2006, at Upon This Rock Baptist Church in Greeleyville with the Rev. Harry Robinson, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Effie Hilton assisting.
Burial was in St. Matthew Cemetery.
