Lillian W. Steed
CHARLESTON - Lillian Wilson Steed, 63, widow of Deacon Benjamin Steed, died Sunday, July 2, 2006, at Roper Hospital in Charleston.
Born April 6, 1943 in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Jesse Wilson and Lela Davis Wilson.
She was a graduate of Manning Training High School in 1962 and furthered her education at Charleston School of Nursing. She remained in that profession for 25 years. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Charleston.
Survivors include two stepdaughters, the Rev. Leverne Washington of Greensboro, N.C., and Denise Jones of Atlanta; and two sisters, Paralee Wilson of Manning and Hattie Graham of Kingstree.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Lee Simmons, Chattie M. Felder and Alberta Wilson; and a brother, Lee Ernest Wilson.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Manning with the Rev. George P. Windley officiating and the Rev. Leroy McElveen and the Rev. Henry McCray assisting.
Burial followed in the Manning Cemetery.

Henry J. Dingle
Henry J. Dingle, 67, died Monday, July 4, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born on Dec. 28, 1937, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Moses Dingle and Mary Dingle. He was the husband of Francis Owens Dingle for 40 years.
Henry, affectionately known as “Joe,” graduated from Scott’s Branch High School. Upon graduation he moved to Brooklyn, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Army from 1955 until he retired in 1983. He then became employed by the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Center until his retirement in 2000.
Joe loved his family and there was not a family event that he would miss, especially when his grandchildren were involved. Joe loved his grandchildren and lovingly referred to them as the “apple of his eye.”
He leaves behind his wife and three sons, Marshall (Mary) Dingle of Jacksonville, Fla, Henry (Denise) Dingle of Greencastle, Pa., and Reginald (Angela) Dingle of Morrisville, N.C.; two daughters, Connie (Herman) Coe of Lydia and Kristie (David) Watson of Aiken; two brothers, Howard (Ann) Dingle of Philadelphia and James (Alma) Seals of Patchogue, N.Y.; three sisters, Mary L. Martin of Philadelphia, Mozell (Albert) Stafford of New York City and Omega (Webb) Hilton of Sumter; an adopted brother, Eddie Johnson of Davis Station; eight grandchildren, Cotillia Coe of Columbia, Crystal (Terrance) Hubbard of Wilmington, N.C., Michael Dingle of Seattle, Tiffany Dingle of Jacksonville, Joshua Dingle of Greencastle, Tristan and Jordan Watson of Aiken and X’Zavier Dingle of Morrisville; two great-grandsons, Jayden Dingle of Jacksonville and Zion Hubbard of Wilmington, N.C.; a special aunt who was dearly loved, Julia Constantine; and a host of nieces, nephews, other aunts, uncles and friends.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 8, 2005, at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. W.T. Johnson, pastor of Taw Caw Baptist Church presiding, the Rev. Omar Hilton, pastor of Mount Lisbon Presbyterian Church, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Oscar McFadden.
Burial followed at Hillside Memorial Park.

Willie J. Ham
BALTIMORE, Md. — Willie “Tubby” James Ham, 39, died Saturday, July 2, 2005, at his home, 2306 Tioga Parkway, Baltimore.
Born Sept. 10, 1965, in the Olanta section of Florence County, he was a son of Joe Louis Burgess and Mary Catherine Ham Kirby. He received his formal education in the public schools of Baltimore and he also received training in the food service industry. In his youth, he became a member of Faith of Hope Revival Holiness Church of God in Baltimore. He later was baptized at Mt. Hope Baptist Church in Baltimore.
Survivors besides his father of Sumter and mother of Baltimore include grandparents, Thomas and Virginia Burgess of Baltimore; two brothers, Jonathan Brooks of Raleigh, N.C., and Joe McGill of Turbeville; four sisters, Denise Butts and Kimberly Kirby, both of Baltimore, Maggie (Samuel) Davis of Hinesville, Ga., and Beverly (Eric) Canty of Santee; seven aunts; three uncles; a niece and four nephews.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 10, 2005, at St. John AME Church in the Workman community of Kingstree with the Rev. Dr. Franklin Reaves, pastor, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray and the Rev. Edward Robinson, eulogist.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Verno Huggins
LEXINGTON — Verno “B.B.” Huggins, 58, died Sunday, July 3, 2005, at Lexington Medical Center.
Born May 29, 1947, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Richard Dixon and Reatha Thames. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he attended St. Mark Baptist Church of Silver and was employed by Lucas Septic Tank Co. of Gaston.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary (Anthony) Porcher, Loreatha Huggins and Arlene Huggins, all of Miami, Fla.; Verno Huggins Jr. of Miami; four brothers, Rubin (Ernestine) Huggins of Miami, Mark Huggins of Silver, Leroy (Bernice) Huggins of Aynor and James (Lulalia) Huggins of Thomasville, N.C.; four sisters, Peggy Durant of Sumter, Alice S. Thompson of Columbia, Mo., Louise Page of Aynor and Carrie Huggins of Silver; four stepbrothers, Harry Thames and James Thames, both of Miami, and John Thames and Luke Thames, both of Sumter; six stepsisters, Dorothy (Otis) McConico and Novella Purvis, both of Pinewood, Ida (Joe) Collins and Carrie Peterson, both of Sumter, and Jannie (Mack) White and Mary (Woodrow) Levy of Miami; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 9, 2005 at the chapel of Job’s Mortuary in Sumter, with Pastor Rodney B. James officiating.
Burial was in Walker Cemetery.

James J. Katsos
PURCELLVILLE, Va. — James John “Jim” Katsos, 62, husband of Sharon Riley Katsos, died Saturday, July 2, 2005, at his home in Purcellville.
Born Jan. 31, 1943, in Sumter, he was a son of Helen Metropol Katsos and the late John James Katsos. He was a retired major from the U.S. Army, serving in Korea and Germany, a veteran of the Vietnam War and recipient of many commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal for valor. Maj. (Ret.) Katsos was also a signal officer. He was a graduate of Wofford College and was retired from Magnavox Systems Corporation. He was president of Santee Security Inc., as well as Katsos Apiary. He was of the Greek Orthodox faith.
Surviving besides his wife of Purcellville and mother of Manning are two sons, John James Katsos II of Lexington and Milton Scott Katsos of Blythewood; three daughters, Christina Katsos Milonas and Charlotte Katsos Sansone of Lexington and Eleni Riley Katsos of Purcellville; a sister, Angela Katsos Kiehling of Charleston; six grandchildren; and a niece.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 8, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with Dr. Paul Sullivan and Father Aris Metrakos officiating.
Burial with full military honors followed in Manning Cemetery.

Jack Logan
Jack Logan, 85, widower of Ida Wells Logan, died Sunday, July 9, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born in Bishopville, he was a son of the late James Albert Logan and the late Mattie Godwin Logan.
Mr. Logan was a retired self-employed painter.
Surviving are a son, Jack C. Logan and wife Jo Ann of Sumter; a daughter, Betty L. Shepp and husband Vic of Sumter; a brother, Johnny Logan of Myrtle Beach; three grandchildren, Chrissy McLeod, Donnie (D.J.) McLeod Jr. and Jackie Evans and husband Tommy; three great-grandchildren, Shayley McLeod, Dayven McLeod and Logan BreAnn Evans; and a special longtime friend, Della Murphy of Sumter.
Mr. Logan was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey Logan; a sister, Elma Hodge; and a stepmother, Florrie Logan.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Harold Greene officiating.
Burial was in Sumter Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Arthur Pack, J.B. Hodge, Robert Osteen, Tommy Evans, Ray Hodge and Lavon McCormic.
Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Hodge and Ira Griffith.

Stacey Pittman
BALTIMORE, Md. — Stacey Pittman, 41, died Friday, July 1, 2005, at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Baltimore.
Born Jan. 28, 1964, in Baltimore, she was a stepdaughter of Mary Pittman and the daughter of the late Casey Pittman. She attended the public school system in Baltimore. She was a loving and courageous person who worked at McDonald’s and as a nurse’s aide, even though she became disabled at an early age. Her love of life and humor were infectious and her memory will live in the hearts of her family and friends always.
Survivors include a daughter, Casey Pittman of Baltimore; a grandmother, Annie Owens of Baltimore; a stepbrother, Larry McBride of Manning; a grandchild; and adopted relatives, the Blanding and Elloba families of Manning.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 9, 2005, at Chapel AME Church in Paxville, with the Rev. William Scott, pastor, officiating, and the Rev. Deloris Gerow, eulogist presiding, and assisted by the Rev. Linda Conyers.

Kimberly E. Thames, 29, died Sunday, July 3, 2005, at her home, 6454 Silver Road, Manning.
Born Nov. 10, 1975, in Manning, she was a daughter of Esaw Thames and Queen Robinson Thames.

John E. Williams
John “Slim” Edward Williams, 40, companion of Cathy Diane Wallace, died Sunday, July 3, 2005, at his residence in Manning.
Born Sept. 26, 1964, in Manning, he was a son of Janie Mae Rawlinson Williams and the late Johnnie Williams and stepson of the late Geraldine Johnson Williams. He received his formal education in the public schools of Dade County in Miami, Fla., and was employed by Freeman Millwork Co. Inc. in Manning.
Survivors besides his mother of Manning include two sons, Lennard Greene and Lil’ John Greene, both of Miami; a daughter, Tierra G. Williams of Miami; two brothers, Jason Williams and Christopher Williams, both of Miami; two sisters, Debra (Jeffrey) Manning of Miami and Cynthia (Ramon) Arriba of Miramar, Fla.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 9, 2005, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Gussie Ceasar, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg and the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Richburg.

Willie M. Young Jr.
Willie Mims Young Jr., 54, died Monday, July 4, 2005, at the Medical University of South Carolina hospital in Charleston.
Born Dec. 7, 1950, in Alcolu, he was a son of Willie Young Sr. and Elizabeth Wilder Francis Young. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County, graduating from Manning Training School. At an early age, he joined Green Hill Baptist Church, serving on the trustee board until his health failed. He was employed with Georgia-Pacific in Alcolu.
Survivors include a son, Gary Young of Alcolu; a brother, Melvin F. Young of Silver; three uncles, Moses (Mary) Harrison and John Harrison, both of Alcolu, and Clifton Harrison of New Zion; a nephew, Thomas Young of Alcolu; and an adopted brother, Joseph Harrison of Manning.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Young.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 10, 2005, at Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Alcolu with the Rev. W.J. Frierson officiating, assisted by Evangelist Sylvia Whitaker.
Burial was in the churchyard.
