Margaret C. Kennedy
Margaret Virginia Cooper Kennedy, 89, widow of William “Buddy” Kennedy, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 20, 1915, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Sidney Cooper and Annabelle Williams Cooper. She received her education at the Melina Parochial School. She was a member of Melina Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two sons, Joe (Sallie) Kennedy of Manning and John Roger (Amelia) Kennedy of Sumter; four daughters, Catherine Betty (George) McKenzie of Gable, Senia K. Gamble and Bessie Mae Kennedy, both of New Zion, Lena Bell (R. Cee) Fleming of Turbeville; one brother, William Cooper of New Zion; three sisters, Pearl Elizabeth Cooper Harrison of New Zion, Anna Ree (Ollie) Pleasant of Detroit and Lavola (Ivory) Brown of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 36 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and 32 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sons and three daughters.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Melina Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Lucious Wheeler, Mary Hagan, Jerome McCray and Legatha McFadden.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Dorene H. King
BISHOPVILLE – Dorene Hodge King, 88, widow of Thomas Joseph King Sr., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at a local nursing center.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Cantey Labon Hodge and the late Alice Bessie Bartlette Hodge. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bishopville, a member of the Happy Timers Group and the Faith Sunday School class. She was a former member of the Iris Garden Club, and was a retired cosmetologist.
Survivors include a son, Joey King of Sumter; daughters, Debbie (Ken) Coesens of Spartanburg, Nancy (Dale) Jackson of Newmarket, N.H., and Shirley (Tom) Leaphart Tom, of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Jean (J.C.) Terry of Sanford, N.C., and Betty Hodge of Birmingham, Ala.; a brother, C.L. Hodge of Ashwood; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Thelma Kirven.
Memorial services were held on Friday, Feb. 25, 2005, in the First Baptist Church of Bishopville with the Rev. Dale Warren officiating.

Archie Bowman
Archie Bowman, widower of Rose Polite-Bowman, was born Aug. 14, 1922, in Clarendon County. He died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Mariner Health of Sumter West. He was a son of the late Sam Bowman and Lucinda Burroughs.
He received his education in Clarendon County. After moving to Sumter he joined Salem Missionary Baptist Church where he served faithfully on the Trustee Board for many years. A veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served his country in World War II, he later received an honorable discharge. He later gained employment with Georgia Pacific Inc. until he retired.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Bernice Heatley of White Plains, N.Y.; his caregivers, Randolph and Sarah Ginn of Sumter; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Salem Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Lamont Newsome officiating.
Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

Sylvester Cain
Sylvester Cain, 61, of Sumter, husband of Mary Washington Cain, died Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 10, 1943, in the Jordan section of Manning, a son of the late Edmond Cain Sr. and Mary Ellison Cain.
He attended Manning High School. He retired from Lembo Body Shop. He joined Union Cypress AME and later Little Zion AME.
Survivors include his wife, Mary W. Cain of the home; two sons, Tyrone L. Cain and Derek P. Cain, both of Sumter; two daughters, Cindy L. Cain of Sumter and Shawanda D. Cain of Spokane. Wash.; three brothers, Everett (Margaret) Cain of Spring Hope, N.C., Henry (Ada) Cain of Manning and Edmond (Shirley) Cain Jr., of Dalzell; five sisters, Sue Esther Blackwell and Juanita (Robert) Waiters, all of Manning, Hattie (Muldrow) Burgess and Evelyn (Alexander) Burgess, all of Philadelphia, Pa., and Inez Cain of Yeadon, Pa.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 28, 2005, at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Larry Odom officiating.
Burial followed in the Union Cypress AME cemetery.

Brenda Clark
Brenda Gail Sims Clark, 52, wife of Donald Ray Clark, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, in Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born Feb. 4, 1953, in Florence, she was a daughter of Clarence Lonnie Sims and the late Bertie Lee Richburg Sims. She was a member of Clarendon Church of God.
Surviving besides her husband and her father of Manning are a son, Richard Charles Spigner of Sumter; a daughter, Cynthia Dawn Spigner of Columbia; two brothers, J. W. Sims of Manning and Ronald Sims of Sumter; two sisters, Margie Ann Lowder and Frances Ann Hodge, both of Manning; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Newton officiating.

Mattie Y. Coker
Mrs. Mattie Yarborough Coker, 85, of New Zion, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after an illness.
Mrs. Coker was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Lexton Yarborough and Maggie Miles Yarborough. She was a seamstress and homemaker. She attended Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church in Manning. She was a member of the Red Hatters Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hertel Carlisle Coker; a daughter, Shirley Ann Floyd; an infant son, four sisters; and five brothers.
She is survived by two daughters, Shelby J. (Linwood C.) Springs of Lake City, and Faye (Ray) Newman of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at the Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church
Burial followed in the New Town Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery,

Lawrence J. Dalton
Lawrence Joseph Dalton, 66, husband of Carol Bush Dalton, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born Feb. 16, 1939, in Watertown, N.Y., he was a son of the late Bernard and Ruth Hughes Dalton. He served in the U.S. Air Force, was retired from the New York State Power Authority, and was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a daughter, Denise Raynor of Virginia Beach, Va.; and three grandchildren, Derek Dalton Raynor, Amanda Raynor and Kristi Raynor.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with Father Thomas Kingsley officiating.

Isabella E. Herring
Isabella Evans Herring, 92, widow of Cannon Herring, died Aug. 22, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born April 9, 1913, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Bossy Brand and Maude Evans. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth, she joined St. John AME Church. She later moved her membership to Howard Chapel AME, where she served as “Mother of the Church.”
Survivors include three sons, John Herring, Prophet Herring and Hardy Herring, all of New Zion; five daughters, Mary (Charlie) Redden, Rosa Brown, Eula Miller, all of New Zion; Eather McFadden of Newark, N.J., and Ethel M. Thompson of Dunnelon, Fla.; one brother, Levi (Susie) Evans of New Zion; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2005, at Howard Chapel AME Church in New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts presiding, assisted by the Rev. Leroy Evans and the Rev. Jerome McCray, eulogist.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Funeral services for Melvin Jones were held on Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Willie Green Jr., eulogist.

Howard J. Mathews
Howard Jean Mathews, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005.
Mr. Matthews was born in Indianapolis, a son of the late Charles W. Mathews and Agnes Johnson Mathews. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Mathews was formerly employed by South Texas Equipment Co. for 13 years and Insley Manufacturing Co. for 32 years. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Vance, and moved to Summerton in 1992.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Mathews of the home; daughter, Diane M. Montgomery of Summerville; sons, David H. Mathews of Milwaukee, and Michael A. Mathews of Marco Island, Fla.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at Hope Lutheran Church in Vance with Pastor Wayne Young officiating.
Burial was held privately.
