Dwayne Furman Lloyd, 45, died Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late William Leon Lloyd and the late Virginia Lucille Fields Lloyd.
Survivors include one son, Steven Lloyd of
Missouri; five brothers, Dan Lloyd of Columbia, Fred Lloyd, and Ricky Lloyd, both of Sumter, Gene Ray Lloyd of
Alabama, and Scott Warren of Chapin; and three sisters, Gail Cannon of Manning, Kathy Lloyd of Sumter and Judy Lynn Byrd of Florence.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, in the Grooms Cemetery with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating.
Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.
O’Donald Mack
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – O’Donald Mack, 72, widower of LaDean Latham Mack and Catherine Stokes Mack, died Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Cheltenham and Old York Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Philadelphia.
Born June 22, 1934, in the Jordan community of Manning, he was a son of Lennie Hilton Mack and the late Levi Mack Sr. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Society Hill AME Church. He retired after 30 years with John B. Kelly Construction Co.
Survivors besides his mother, Lennie Hilton Mack of Manning, include three sons, Donald Mack Jr., Brian Mack, and Aleen Mack, all of Philadelphia; one daughter, Evetta Denis (Jerome) Jones of Middleton, N.J.; three brothers, Levi Mack Jr., Prentiss Mack, and J.P. Mack, all of Philadelphia; and three sisters, Pearl Benbow and Inez Manning, both of Manning, and Clitel Pittman of Atlanta, Ga.
He was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006 at Alfonso Cannon Funeral Home, Chapel Services, 2315-19 N. Broad St., Philadelphia.

Luvell Mitchell
Luvell Mitchell, 45, husband of Geneva Ford Mitchell, died Oct. 1, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born June 28, 1961, in Far Rockaway,
N.Y., he was a son of the late Authur Mitchell and Luella Nesmith Mitchell. His education was obtained in the public schools of
New York and Williamsburg County. He was a member of St. John AME Church, Nesmith, and was employed with a commercial cleaning service in Myrtle Beach prior to his illness.
Survivors include one son, Hakim Morris of Nesmith; one daughter, Annie Eaddy of Nesmith; one brother, Ronald Mitchell (Pauline) of Far Rockaway; five sisters, Olivia Thames and Deborah (Neal) David, both of Manning, Carleen Mitchell and Sydell Cook, both of Far Rockaway, and Mildred (Willie) Emerson of Coney Island; three aunts, Lillie Beeks of Brooklyn,
N.Y., Bulen Stokes of Titusville, Fla., and Diane Green of Nesmith.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at St. John AME Church, Morrisville, with the Rev. Willie Holmes, the Rev. Major Lloyd, the Rev. Thomas Samuel, the Rev. James Nesmith and the Rev. Henry Pressley.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Gedine Smiling Sr.
Gedine Smiling Sr., 77, widower of Loretta McKnight Smiling, died Oct. 2, 2006, at Carolinas Hospital System, Florence.
Born Jan. 18, 1929, in Manning, he was a son of the late John Filbet Smiling and Magdalene Tindall Smiling. He received his education at Manning Training School, Manning. He accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Bethesda Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the board of deacons and many auxiliaries. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Brotherly Love No. 99 and a master mason. He was a truck driver for 50 years.
Survivors include five sons, Herbert (Estelle) Smiling of Quimby, Gedine (Patricia) Smiling Jr., Russell (Kathy) Smiling, Ronnie (Pam) Smiling, and Marvin (Carol) Smiling, all of Manning; seven daughters, Francine (Lawrence) Pugh, Deborah (Sheley) Singletary, Sherri (Spencer) McFadden, Cynthia (Larry) Fulton, all of Manning, Marletta (Fred) Elliott of Fredricksburg, Va., Genovia (Jerome) McKay of Darlington, and Selena (Nathan) China of Manning; one grandchild reared as his own, Shakeeta Smiling of Manning; two brothers, John (Frances) Smiling and the Rev. Al (Eyvonne) Smiling, both of Sumter; five sisters, Ernestine (Leon) Pack of Turbeville, Eula Mae (Lindberg) Dozier of Manning, Everlene Smiling of Sumter, Rebecca (the Rev. Lewis) Lacey of Richmond, Va., and Gardenia (Ralph) Sligh of Columbia; 38 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at Taw Caw Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton, with the Rev. B. Graham, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Al Smiling.
Burial was in Bethesda Baptist Churchyard cemetery.

Furman Butler
Furman “Doc” Butler, 82, died Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 16, 1924, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Robert Butler Sr. and the late Coralee Butler.
Mr. Butler received his formal education at the Butler Public School in Summerton. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Oaks AME Church in the Oaks community of North Santee.
Affectionately known as “Doc,” he was a farmer all of his life.
Those left to celebrate his life and cherish his memory are two brothers, Joseph (Annie) Butler of
Washington, D.C., and Robert Lee Butler Jr. of Summerton; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2006, at Oaks AME Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Bookhardt officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Peter Cain Jr.
Peter Cain Jr., 84, widower of Julia Brunson Cain, died Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
Born Feb. 19, 1922, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Peter Cain Sr. and Estelle Brunson Cain. He received his formal education in the Jordan Elementary School. He was a lifelong member of Union Cypress AME Church, serving on the trustee board, and was instrumental in cutting trees and cleaning the cemetery. He was retired from Witherspoon’s Logging Co. of Alcolu.
Survivors include one son, Alphonza (Gardenia) Cain of Manning; four daughters, Carolyn Tomlin of Alcolu, Edith C. (Herbert) King of Manning, Dora J. Cain of Kissimmee, Fla., and Doris (Ernest) Ross of Lamar; four brothers, Willie Cain of Long Island,
N.Y., Alvin (Eaddy) Cain of Clearwater, Fla., Thomas (Ann) Cain of Philadelphia, Pa., and George Cain of Manning; four sisters, Mary C. Pearson of Baltimore, Md., Ruth C. Nelson and Elmara C. (Angelo) Sharpe, both of Manning, and Ellen Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews reared in the home, Valencia (Howard) Pugh of Paxville, Velda Taylor of Sumter and Charles (Janice) Brown Jr.
He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Lonearl; and two sisters, Ethel Hilton and Isabella Holliday.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2006, at Union Cypress AME Church in the Jordan community, with the Rev. Betty Clark, pastor, presiding, assisted by the Rev. Melissa Green, the Rev. Dr. Cokley Richburg, the Rev. Emanuel Evans and the Rev. Manuel Fogle as eulogist.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Alex Harvin
VALLEY STREAM,
N.Y. – Alex Harvin, 55, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2006, at Nashua University Medical Center, East Meadow,
N.Y.
Born Nov. 19, 1950, in Davis Station, Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Daniel Harvin and Hattie Mellerson Harvin. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined Triumph Holiness Church, Davis Station, and was a member of the youth choir. He moved to Bronx,
N.Y., where he worked at Andrew Freeman Nursing Home and later at Beth Abraham Nursing, where he worked as dietician and assistant chef, until his health began to fail.
Survivors include three sisters, Azalee (James) Martin of Columbia, Eulease (Larry) Bowman of Baltimore, Md. and Bernice (Nehemiah) Conyers of Valley Stream.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Jonathan Anderson, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Richard Jackson Sr.
Richard Jackson Sr. departed this life on Sept. 23, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
He was born July 22, 1922, in Clarendon County, a son of the late Robin Jackson and the late Susan Green Jackson. He was raised in a Christian home. He received Christ at an early age and joined St. Mark AME Church, where he served on the trustee board faithfully, until his health failed. He attended the schools of Clarendon County.
He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Ida Ragin Jackson, of the home; two sons, Richard Jr. (Ruby) Jackson of Camden, N.J., and Moses (Bessie) Jackson of Bronx,
N.Y.; a daughter, Mary (Sam) Lewis of Brooklyn,
N.Y.; a sister, Carrie Lee Frank of
Washington, D.C.; a son-in-law, Beaver House of Bronx; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Maxine House of Bronx.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at St. Mark AME Church with the Rev. Ernest Brown, pastor, officiating, Rev. Jack Dais presiding, and the Revs. Fran McFadden, O. Donald Dingle and Mitchell assisting.
Burial was in St. Mark Memorial Garden.

Vera McFadden
Vera McFadden, 89, widow of Eugene McFadden, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
She was born July 23, 1917, in Clarendon County, a daughter of the late Allen and Fannie McFadden Bennett. At an early age, she joined Howard Chapel Church, where she worked very hard and enjoyed working for her Lord. She also attended Howard Chapel School and worked very hard as a substitute teacher and teacher’s assistant. After moving to Sumter with her husband, Eugene, they had a wonderfully blessed time raising their two sons, Austin and Ashwell (deceased) and two daughters, Jo Ann and Dora Jean. With the desire to continue serving her Lord, she joined Salem Missionary Baptist Church, where she worked faithfully on the pastor’s aide and mother’s club. She was presently a member of Union Station AME Church, where she was a loyal member until her death.
She is survived by two sons, Austin McFadden of
Washington, D.C., and James Nelson of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Jo Ann (Sam) Caldwell of
Washington, D.C., and Dora Jean Sanders of Sumter; one daughter-in-law, Willie Mae McFadden of
Washington, D.C.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a grandson who was very devoted to her, Austin Smalls of Sumter; a special nephew whom she loved dearly, Leroy E. McKenzie of Sumter; godsons, Jimmie Lee James, Chris Blanding, Ralph Canty, Richard Cooper, Bobby Cooper, Alfred Canty and Darryl Canty; goddaughters, Mary Mellette, Jacqueline Hunt, Montreyah Tyree and Dean Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends who are deeply grieved by her passing.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at Union Station AME Church with the Rev. Friendly J. Gadson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Joshua Dupree, the Rev. Edwin E. Webb, the Rev. Cornell Hampton and the Rev. Jerome McCray.
Burial followed in Melina Cemetery in Sardinia.
Pallbearers were the Sons of Allen and flower bearers were the stewardesses of Union Station AME Church.

Joshua P. Overstreet
Joshua Prentiss Overstreet, 22, of Eutawville, S.C., a self-employed hardwood floor installer, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, in Berkeley County.
He was born on May 8, 1984, in Charleston, a son of Mary Burrows Overstreet and Donald A. Driggers Sr. He was a member of the Manning Church of God and attended Palmetto Land Baptist Church in Summerville.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Pete Burrows.
Surviving are his mother of Camden; his father of Ocala,
Florida; his fiancée, Stacy Pressler of Eutawville; a daughter, Breanna Lynn Overstreet of Eutawville; a son, Jordan Prentiss Overstreet if Eutawville; two sisters, Paula Ramset and Mindy Rawls, both of Camden; two brothers, Donald A. Driggers Jr. of Summerville, and Barry M. Driggers of Bonneau; his grandmother, Ann Burrows of Eutawville; his aunt, Beth Dorman of Moncks Corners; and his uncle, Buddy Burrows.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 2, 2006, in the chapel of Dial-Murray Funeral Home in Moncks Corner. Pastor Richard Beilos officiated.
