Carolyn S. Godwin

Carolyn Stone Godwin, 72, passed away on Friday, March 30, 2007, at a Darlington hospice facility.

Mrs. Godwin was born in Darlington, daughter of the late James Casper Stone and Ray Rhodes Stone. She was graduate of St. John’s High School and the University of South Carolina. Mrs. Godwin was a retired social worker for the state of South Carolina. She was a member of Summerton Baptist Church, where she had served as the church organist.

Surviving are two sons, Joharie “Joey” Larue (Sheree) Godwin Jr. of Summerton and James “Jim” Stone (Shannon) Godwin of Darlington; a daughter, Joanna (Tony) Hall of Florence; six grandchildren, Lauren Windham Godwin, Brittany Elizabeth Godwin, Joharie “J” Larue Godwin III, Peyton Austin Godwin, Merritt Victoria Hall and Anna-Leah Hall; and a brother James “Jim” Casper (Dot) Stone of Darlington.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Joharie Larue Godwin Sr.

Graveside services were held on Sunday, April 1, 2007 in Grove Hill Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Kitchen Fund, P.O. Box 297, Darlington, S.C. 29540.

Belk Funeral Home of Darlington was in charge of the arrangements.

David E. Harrington

David Eugene Harrington, 46, died Friday, March 30, 2007, at his home.

Born Feb. 17, 1961, in Manning, he was the son of W.D. and Maudie Gene Richburg Harrington. He was a farmer and body shop owner and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving besides his parents of Manning are a daughter, Ashley Gene Harrington of Columbia; a sister, Evelyn H. Mathis of Sumter; a brother, Billy Dow Harrington of Manning; a nephew, William Mathis; and a niece, Amanda Mathis.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 1, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Revs. Jerry Cottone and Charlie Tyler officiating.

Burial followed in Brewington Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Todd Barwick, Bobby Fleming, Mitch Richburg, Brock Richburg, Allan Richburg, David Hill, Mike Dinkins and Walter Riggs.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

Stephens Funeral Home and Crematory of Manning, was in charge of the arrangements.

Novia Anne Miklosko

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Novia Anne Miklosko, 63, wife of Paul Miklosko, died Sunday, Sept. 10, 2006, at her residence in Fort Wayne.

She was born Aug. 23, 1943, in Turbeville. She was a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital for 41 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Turbeville.

Survivors besides her husband, Paul R. Miklosko of Fort Wayne, include a son, Steven Scott (Kristina M.) Seifert of Indianapolis, Ind.; two daughters, Jill M. (Kurt) Swaim of Frankfurt, Ky., and Laurie L. (Walter III) Anderson of Goshen, Ind.; a brother, Leroy “Moochie” Markle of Turbeville; five sisters, Janice Stevens of Conway, Kathy Burgess of New Zion, Jho Sessions of Myrtle Beach, Stella Grant of Camden and Beth Gardner of McBee; and five grandchildren, Bailey K. (Joseph) Webster, Chelsea M. Seifert, David A. Yates, Christopher S. Seifert and Samantha L. Anderson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John D. and Vileta Gibbons Markle; and stepmother, Doris Markle.

Graveside services were held at the First Baptist Church cemetery in Turbeville.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Turbeville; 5 North Unit at St. Joseph Hospital; or Visiting Nurse and Hospice.

Elzey Patterson Rodak Home for Funerals of Ft. Wayne, Indiana was in charge of the arrangements.

Rosa Lee D. Bradley

Rosa Lee Dow Bradley, wife of the late Samuel Bradley Sr., died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born in Sumter County, on Dec. 12, 1939, she was a daughter of Mary Johnson Dow. She was educated at the Central Carolina Technical College and attended the University of South Carolina School of Applied Professional Science. She was raised at Orangehill RMUE Church and, after marriage, joined the Tiverton Missionary Baptist Church in Wedgefield, where she belonged to several auxiliaries including the senior choir, the usher board, pastor’s aide and the missionary board. She was later affiliated with the Greater House of Prayer Community Church and was born again at the New Hope Church of our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, David James; and a brother, Edward Dow.

Surviving are her mother, Mary Johnson Dow of Summerton; three sons, Sam (Daisy) Bradley Jr. and Robert Bradley of Wedgefield, and John Henry Bradley of Sumter; two daughters, Patricia Ann Bradley and Barbara Jean Bradley of Wedgefield; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Robert (Rosa Lee) Dow of Sumter and Joseph Dow of Wedgefield.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, at the New Hope Church of our Lord Jesus Christ of the Apostolic Faith in Sumter, with Elder Russell Rogers, pastor, Minister Robert L. Wilson, officiating, and Pastor Wesley Maple, eulogist.

Interment followed at the Tiverton Baptist Church Cemetery in Wedgefield.

Palmer Memorial Chapel of Sumter was in charge of funeral arrangements.

Samuel Cantey

Samuel Cantey, 45, died Sept. 26, 2006, at the home of his sister.

Born Feb. 18, 1961, in Rimini, he was a son of Mary James Cantey and the late Edward Cantey Sr. At an early age, he joined Antioch Union Methodist Episcopal Church, Rimini, and in October 2005 he rededicated his life to Christ and was faithful until his death. He was a 1979 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School, Summerton, and was employed for 14 years by Form Fiber Inc. of Sumter.

Survivors include his loving mother, Mary J. Cantey of Rimini; one son, Samuel Canty Jr.; one stepdaughter, Sheree Green, both of Sumter; three sisters, Susanna (Samuel) Mark and Myrtle (William) Pinckney, both of Stateburg, and Luevenia (Elias) Johnson of Sumter; two brothers, Edward (Easter) Cantey Jr. of Wedgefield and Lonnie E. Cantey of Rimini; two aunts, Caroline J. Singleton of Camden and Louvenia J. (Leroy) Dinkins of Sumter; four uncles, Levi (Susanna) Cantey of Pinewood, Andrew (Sarah) Lovett and Jessie (Helen) Lovett, both of New York, N.Y., and Leroy (Bessie) James of Pinewood; seven nieces; six nephews; two grandnephews; one grandniece; a step-granddaughter; a devoted fiancée, Valorie Dees; and a host of other relatives, extended family and friends.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Robbie and Sarah Thomas Cantey; maternal grandparents, Semon and Lucinda J. James; and two infant sisters, Katie Jane and Cheryl Ann Cantey.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at Antioch Union Methodist Episcopal Church in the Rimini community, with the Rev. Jonathan Smith, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Leroy T. James, Mary L. Brailsford, Warren Hatcher and Pastor Edmond Johnson.

Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Job’s Mortuary Inc. of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.

Turner B. Sugg

SOUTHPORT, N.C. – Turner Bynum Sugg, 77, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, in a nursing facility in Southport.

Born in Alcolu, he was a son of the late George C. Sugg and the late Zola Britton Sugg. Mr. Sugg attended Graham Baptist Church. He was owner and operator of his own property management company and was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

Surviving are two sons, Turner Anthony Sugg of Southport and James William Sugg of Sumter; two daughters, Angela Sugg (Harold) Owens of Columbia and Linda Sugg (Joseph) Sullivan of Sumter; two brothers, George C. Sugg of Pawleys Island and Bill Sugg of Sumter; a sister, Zola Sugg Clayton of Williamston, N.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, in the Davis Cemetery with the Rev. John Patrick officiating.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210.

Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and Crematory of Sumter was in charge of the arrangements.

Robena B. Taylor

COLUMBIA – Robena Bottoms Taylor, 85, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2006, in Tucker Nursing Center in Columbia.

Born Nov. 11, 1920, in Blenheim, she was a daughter of the late Lucien Latimore and Dora Elizabeth Polston Bottoms. She was a member of Parnassus United Methodist Church in Blenheim and a graduate of Marlboro High School in Blenheim.

Surviving are a daughter, Clara T. McArthur of Bennettsville; a sister, Ruby Hodge of Blenheim; four grandchildren, Lee McArthur, Tony McArthur, Rebecca McArthur and Taylor Littlehale; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Taylor; and two daughters, Sarah Taylor and Linda T. Littlehale.

A graveside memorial service was held on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, in Brownsville Baptist Church Cemetery in Brownsville.

Memorials may be made to The Tucker Center, 2200 Harden St., Columbia, S.C. 29203 or to Salem Baptist Building Fund, 1618 Salem Highway, Bennettsville, S.C. 29512.

Lenny Green

HILLSIDE, N.J. – Lenny Green, 56, husband of Rose Marie Jackson Green, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at his residence in Hillside, N.J.

Born July 27, 1950, in the Silver section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Mabel Rhames Green and the late Robert “Boy” Green. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Savior and joined Friendship AME Church. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1968 graduate of Scott’s Branch High School. He furthered his education at Vorhees College, Denmark.

Survivors besides his wife, Rose Marie Jackson Green of the home, include his mother, Mable Rhames Green of the Silver community of Summerton; two daughters, Rosalin (Calvin) Blair of Manning and Tamika Lynett Green of Portsmouth, Va.; one brother, Carl R. Green of Silver; two sisters, Barnett Nelson and Hilda Flippen Green (Wade), both of Silver; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. .7, 2006, at Friendship AME Church in the Silver community, Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. James B. Stukes, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. George P. Windley, the Rev. Joseph Postell and the Rev. Terry Johnson.

Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning was in charge of arrangements.

Frankie McElvogue

Frankie Hughes Brown McElvogue, 81, died Sunday, Oct. 1, 2006, at a Winston-Salem, N.C., hospital.

Mrs. McElvogue was born Aug. 19, 1925, in Nesmith, a daughter of Wally and Sally Hughes. She graduated from Indiantown School and was a dedicated homemaker and mother. Mrs. McElvogue was a member of Good Shepard Baptist Church, Manning, and the TOPS organiztion.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald McElvogue; a daughter, Sandra Brown Gibbons; a granddaughter, Susan Morris; and a grandson, Roger “Trey” Brown III.

Surviving are a son Mack (Madelyn) Brown of Winston-Salem; a sister, Jo Bacon of Columbia; eight grandchildren, Will and Wendy Morris and Greg and Kim Morris, all of Kingstree, Reneé and Robin Hasson of Stafford, Va., and Ryan and Gretchen Brown of Sylva, N.C.; seven great-grandchildren, Brian and Morgan Morris, Brittany, Amanda and Shelby Hasson and Callie and Gregory Morris.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006, in the chapel of Williamsburg Funeral Home of Kingstree.

Burial followed at Kingstree Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the American Cancer Society.

Janie B. Pearson

Janie Brock Pearson, 78, widow of the late David Pearson, died Oct. 3, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Born March 15, 1928, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Rilla Brock. She received her formal education in the public schools of Jordan. In her youth, she joined White Oak AME Church, Davis Station. Later she joined the Ark of God, Summerton, and then she became a member of Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ, Pearson Road, Manning, where she served faithfully until death.

Survivors include a special niece and caregiver, Lee M. Pearson of Summerton; and one sister-in-law, Elder Daisy Mae Ragin of Sumter.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2006, at Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ in Manning, with County Prince Sampson Pearson, pastor, Bishop John H. Griffin, presiding, assisting Elder Hattie Weathers and the Rev. Patrick Mellerson.

Burial was in the Carolina Cemetery.

Blackwell and Jenkins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
