Ella D. Lemon
Ella Dingle Lemon, 75, widow of Deacon Enoch Lemon Sr., died Monday, Oct. 17, 2005, at her residence in Manning.
Born Aug. 1, 1930, in the Jordan section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ernest Dingle and Edith Robinson. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ and joined Mount Chapel Baptist Church. After marriage, she joined Rock Hill Baptist Church, serving as a missionary and deaconess.
Survivors include three sons, Eddie Lee (Dorothy) Lemon of Atlanta, Isiah (Lou Ida) Lemon of Manning and Enoch Lemon Jr. of Columbia; a grandson she reared as her own, Samuel A. Nelson of Alaska; three daughters, Eloise Nelson of the home, Deloris Simmons of Atlanta and Mary Ellen (Clifford) Brevard of Columbia; four brothers, James Dingle and Henry (Frances) Dingle, both of Manning, the Rev. Lee Earnest (Shirley) Dingle of Sumter, Joseph (Marie) Dingle Sr. of Warner Robin, Ga.; two sisters, Janet Bradley of Evanston, Ill and Elma (Paul) Blackwell of Manning; and seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Old Georgetown Road, Manning, with the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn, pastor, officiating, assisting the Revs. Cokley Richburg, Carnell Witherspoon and Lee Earnest Dingle.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Lorean G. Lindsay
Lorean Gibson Lindsay, 69, wife of Heyward S. Lindsay Sr., died Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born Oct. 19, 1936, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Elijah Gibson and Janie Thompson White.
She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was baptized as a Jehovah’s Witness on Nov. 18, 1964, and was a faithful servant until death.
Survivors besides her husband of 54 years, Heyward Lindsay Sr. of the home include three sons, Heyward S. (Carrie) Lindsay Jr. of Brunswick, Ga., Julious J. (Tawana) Lindsay of Middleburg, Md., and Alvin (Deborah) Lindsay of Davis Station; four daughters, Janie (Joseph) Doughty and Theresa (Charles) White, both of Manning, Sylvia (Robert) Brown of Silver and Lorena (Ferdinand) Pearson of Sumter; a brother, Ronald E. (Hattie) Gibson of Manning; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie T. Jones and Pearline Lewis and one brother, Louis Thompson.
Memorial services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005, from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 8547 Summerton Highway, in Pinewood, with Brother Keith Prescord, chairman and Brother James Simmons, officiating.

Appelt James Porter
Appelt James Porter, 80, widower of Myrtle Braxton Porter, died Friday, October 21, 2005, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born April 11, 1925, in Lake City, he was a son of the late Jim Porter and the late Janie Barfield Porter Cook. He was a retired self-employed bulldozer operator and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith.
Surviving are a son, John Porter of Manning; three daughters, Juliette Lawhon and Virginia Strickland of Summerton and Linda Wadford of Manning; a brother, Albert Cook of Manning; three sisters, Ola Barfield, Valerie Barfield and Inelle Barfield all of Lake City; four grandchildren, Missy Evans, Brandy Wadford, Joseph Cutter and Mark Porter; and a great grandson, B. J. Cutter.
Funeral services were held on Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Jimmy Porter officiating.
Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Miriam T. Shealy
Miriam Joycelyn Taylor Shealy, 74, wife of Carey C. Shealy, Sr., died Wednesday in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born November 12, 1930, in Newberry, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Walter and Sarah Louise Allen Taylor. She was a grocery store cashier, a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, a former den mother for Boy Scouts of America, former member of the Women of the Moose, and was formerly employed at Sunbeam Bread Store.
Surviving are her husband of Summerton; two sons, Carey C. “C.J.” Shealy, Jr. and his wife Viola of Florence and Sease Allen Shealy and his wife Sonia of Lamar; a sister, Betty Jean Schumpert and her husband Donald of Newberry; a brother, Jimmy Taylor and his wife Lou Ellen of Summerton; a granddaughter, Lisa Trask of Summerton; and one great granddaughter, Cara Taylor Trask of Summerton.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Marion Brazell officiating.
Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.

Preston Aiken
Preston Aiken, 76, widower of Novella Sinkler Aiken, died Oct. 16, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
Born Aug. 17, 1928, in the St. Paul section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Lossie Aiken and Carrie Ragin Aiken. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he joined St. Matthews AME Church. He worked at Pinewood Sawmill and Martin Brothers Logging Co.
Survivors include one son, John Preston (Beverly) Aiken Jr. of Savannah, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Diane C. Aiken of Manning; three grandchildren, Keisha (Keith) James and Lester “Pa” (Le Mel Pearson) Thomas, both of Summerton, and John D. Simmons of Savannah, Ga.; a great-granddaughter, Cashell James of Summerton; three aunts, Nora Lee Ragin of Miami, Jannie Carter and Lu Hampton, both of Summerton; three devoted nieces, Rosa Lee Conyers, Pamela Aiken and Denise Miller, all of Manning; and a host of other nieces and nephews; and four sisters, Mamie Cummings, Annie Mabel Conyers, Corrine Brown, all of Manning, and Susie Mae Wilson of Richmond, Va.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Elijah Aiken; and a daughter, Betty Ann Thomas.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Manuel Fogle, pastor of St. Matthews AME Church, Summerton, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Saymon James and the Rev. Henry Mitchell.
Burial followed in St. Matthews Church Cemetery.

Paul Betts
THOMSON, Ga. – Paul Betts, 67, widower of Anna Ruffin Betts, died Nov. 6, 2006, at McDuffie Regional Medical Center, Thomson.
Born Oct. 14, 1939, in Castleberry, Ala., he was a son of the late Joe Betts and Sylvia Kennedy Betts. He attended Southern Normal School, Brewton, Ala. He worked interstate construction, working state to state building interstate highways.
Survivors include one brother-in-law, Herbert Ruffin of Manning; and four sisters, Annette Boughton of Atmore, Ala., Lillie R. Dexter and Voncile Monroe, both of Brewton, and Elnora Betts of Jenning, Mo.
He was preceded in death by one daughter and one sister.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Areathea Kennedy officiating.
Burial was in Fourth Crossroad Baptist Church cemetery.

Ronald D. Stokes
Ronald Deitrick Stokes, 52, died Oct. 30, 2006, at his residence in the Paxville community.
Born June 16, 1954, in Paxville, Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Everett B. Stokes Sr. and Carrie B. (Stokes) Hines and stepson of Pearline (York) Stokes. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and Sumter Area Technical College and he was employed with various businesses in Clarendon and Sumter counties.
Survivors include six daughters, Denitra Dawn Stokes of Manning, Moncia Hope Stokes of Atlanta, Ga., Tanesha Addriena (Kevin) Lloyd of Columbus, Ga., Nyland Ronnetta Stokes, Carmen Antwainette Stokes and April Shardae Stokes, all of Sumter; a brother, Everett (Rosa) Stokes of Manning; two sisters, Carolyn (Curtis) Sheriod of Andrews and Wandalyn E. Stokes of Anderson; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006, at Fleming and DeLaine Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. Major Lloyd officiating.
Burial was in Manning Cemetery.

Ionie Ard Morris
Ionie Ard Morris, 92, widow of R. Nelson Morris Sr., died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, in Sumter.
Born Sept. 8, 1914, in Clarendon County, she was the second daughter of the late Edward Louis Ard and the late Naomi Fleming Ard. Growing up in Alcolu, she attended Clarendon Baptist Church, where she became a member and was baptized.
After her marriage to R. Nelson Morris, she became a homemaker, raising one son and three daughters.
Surviving are her son, R. Nelson “Rudy” Morris Jr. (Brenda) of Alcolu; three daughters, Edwardine Coker (Mutt) and Shirley Blackmon, both of Alcolu, and Meree McAlister (Johnny) of Sumter. Mrs. Morris is also survived by four sisters, Vera Rogers and Laura Barwick of North Charleston, Ann Hall of Pinewood and Louise Leybourne of Dayton,
Ohio; six grandchildren, Bill Coker, Libby Barrineau, Robbie Blackmon, Ricky Blackmon, Cindy McCoy and Ginger Morris; 13 great-grandchildren, Kevyn McDonald, Tripp Coker, Derek Barrineau, Casey Barrineau, Corey Barrineau, Lorre Coker, Becky Grice, Anna Beth Blackmon, Jeremy Blackmon, Nita Blackmon, Luke Blackmon, Terry McCoy Jr. and Eric McCoy; two great-great-grandchildren, Anna
Georgia Coker and Lillie Blakelyn Coker. She is also survived by many devoted nieces and nephews as well as special family friends, Virginia Gandy of Gable and the Beatson family of Sumter.
She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Laura Gibbons Ard; a grandson, Ed Coker; a brother, Harvin Ard; and two sisters,
Georgia Ard Freeman and Marcelle Ard Barwick.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 3, 2006, at Clarendon Baptist Church in Alcolu with great nephews, the Revs. Kirk Carlisle and Todd Fleming officiating.
Burial followed in Hodge Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bill Coker, Tripp Coker, Casey Barrineau, Derek Barrineau, Terry McCoy Jr. and Eric McCoy.

Annie Ragin
Mother Annie Laura Nelson Ragin, 81, widow of Bishop Pinkney “Humppa” Ragin Jr., died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born March 11, 1925, in Yamassee, she was a daughter of the late General Nelson and Anna Liza Deloach Nelson.
She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In her youth she accepted Christ as her Savior and joined St. Phillip UME and later she joined Open Door Holiness, where she served faithfully as mother of the church. She later co-founded St. Paul Holiness Church in St. Paul, where she was mother of the church till death.
Survivors include four sons, Willie (Barbara) Ragin of Gable, Jonathan (Barbara) Ragin of Raeford, N.C., Robert (Annette) Ragin of Summerton and John (Mary) Ragin of Akron,
Ohio; four daughters, Fenia Ragin of the home, Daisy (Chester) Lawson, Kathy D. Ragin, both of Summerton, and Annie (Kenneth) McKenzie of Miami, Fla.; two nephews reared as her own, Robert S. (Dorothy) Ragin of Akron,
Ohio and Thomas (Tracey) Ragin of Sumter; two granddaughters reared as her own, Evangelist Quantae Ragin of Sumter and Kathy Campbell of Manning; three brothers, Albert (Mary Lee) Nelson and Israel Nelson, both of Miami, Fla., and Flamon (Earnestine) Nelson of Deerfield, Fla.; 26 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, a sister and two brothers.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2006, at Son Rise International Church, formally My Father’s House, in Summerton with the Rev. Juanita Lawson Powell, pastor, officiating, eulogist Pastor Esther Madison and assisting Pastor Reatha Bennett, Rev. Richard Baxter and Elder James Brunson.
Burial was in the St. Paul Holiness Church cemetery.
