Lessie Geddings Pringle
SUMTER – Lessie Geddings Pringle, 89, widow of James Arthur Pringle, Sr., died Saturday, December 16, 2006 in Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.
Born September 27, 1917, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Robert Joseph and Clemmie Geddings Geddings. She was former owner and operator of Rainbow Restaurant and was a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, James Arthur (Jan) Pringle, Jr. of Fripp Island; a daughter, Mary Ellen (Troy) Turner of Sumter; six grandchildren, Allen Mercer, Kim Garcia, Holly Pringle, Todd Pringle, Mandy Frankenstein and Carrie Truell; seven great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2006, in Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jim Chandler officiating, assisted by the Rev. Donnie Collins.
Burial followed in the Sumter Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Gus Pringle, Gerry Truell, Benjamin Holiday, Charles Turner, Raymond Turner and Ted Hardy.

Arthur B. Pugh
Arthur Brooks Pugh, age 18, died Thursday, March 22, 2007, in Milwaukee, Wis.
He was the grandson of the Rev. David Pugh and the Rev. Ruth Miller Pugh.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 30, 2007, at Robert Thompson Jr. AME Church in Milwaukee.

Loran R. Shaffer Jr.
Loran Ray Shaffer Jr., 76, husband of Velma McMillen Shaffer, died Thursday, March 29, 2007, at his home in Manning.
Born Dec. 22, 1930, in Morgantown, W.Va., he was a son of the late Loran Ray Shaffer Sr. and the late Gertrude Hostetler Shaffer. He was a retired electrical engineer, a United States Navy veteran and a graduate of West Virginia University. Mr. Shaffer attended Manning United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 53 years of Manning; a son, Michael Ray Shaffer of Dallas, Texas; three daughters, Suzanne M. Spicer of Fort Mitchell, Ky., Sally S. Dempsey of Centreville, Va., and Amy S. Weiss of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Dolores McKenzie of Hendersonville, N.C., and Carla McManus of Cleveland; nine grandchildren, Amanda, Michelle and Christina Shaffer, Logan and Michael Spicer, Jessica and Erin Dempsey and Connor and Madison Weiss.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, April 4, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Debra Quilling officiating.

Marion McBeth Ardis
Marion McBeth “Mack” Ardis, 87, widower of Mary Hobson Ardis, died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2006, at a local nursing center.
Born in Pinewood, he was a son of the late Henry Cornelius Ardis and the late Eva Ardis. Mr. Ardis was a member of Sumter First Church of the Nazarene and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.
Mr. Ardis is survived by his son, Marion Eugene “Gene” (Betty) Ardis of Sumter; three brothers, Wilbur Ardis and Willis Ardis, both of Sumter, and Louie Ardis of Paxville; two grandsons, Marion Eugene Ardis Jr. and Todd Stewart Ardis, both of Sumter; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are Jeanette Newsome and David Purvis, both of Sumter, and Joyce Brown of Covington, Ga., whom he and his late wife, Mary Hobson Ardis, reared; and 10 children, who loved and adored him.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Laurie Tobias; and four brothers, Leslie Ardis, Russell Ardis, William “Bill” Ardis and Melvin Ardis.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, at Sumter First Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Greg Pressley and Cheryl Kammermann officiating.
Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Peggy M. Barrett
Peggy Mahoney Barrett, age 59, of Goldsboro, N.C. died Wednesday, Dec. 20, 2006, from injuries received in an automobile accident. Born Sept. 4, 1947 in Manning, she is the daughter of Josephine Brunson Mahoney of Sumter, and the late James Daniel Mahoney. Employed with Advantage Marketing, she was an active member of the Tarheel Twirlers Square Dance Club and an officer with the North Carolina Square Dance Federation.
In addition to her mother, Mrs. Barrett is survived by her husband, Jack Barrett; a daughter, Leslie B. (Billy) Anderson of Grantham, N.C.; a son, Gregory J. (Kim) Barrett of Grantham; a daughter-in-law, Angela Wise of Grantham; a sister, Ida Mae (Everette) Harrington of Sumter; six grandchildren, Ryan, Hayley, Ashton, Heidi, Kylie and Noah; two step-grandchildren, Kelly and Cameron; and one step-great-grandchild, Hunter.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at the Goldsboro Worship Center in Goldsboro with Pastor Jerry Andrews and Pastor Danny Johnson officiating.
Burial followed in Wayne Memorial Park in Dudley, N.C.
Peggy will be remembered for being a dedicated and loving wife, mother and Nana.

Eva P. Brunson
Evangelist Eva Pompey Brunson, 93, widow of Horace Brunson, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, at Lake Marion Nursing Home, Summerton.
Born March, 4, 1913, in the Pompeytown section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Richard Pompey and Henrietta Jerro Pompey. She received a formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She joined Pine Grove AME Church in her youth. After moving to Philadelphia, Pa., she joined New Jerusalem Church in Christ. After relocating back home, she united her membership to Pine Grove AME Church.
Survivors include a son, Ernest (Bertha) Brunson of Philadelphia; a daughter, Mary Edmonds of Baltimore, Md.; two brothers, Chester (Queen) Pompey and Clarence (Agnes) Pompey, both of Manning; two sisters, Carrie Green of Philadelphia and Henrietta P. Bennett of Manning; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at Pine Grove AME Church, Kenwood Road (Old River Road), Manning, with the Rev. Moses Wilson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.
Pallbearers were nephews and men of the church.
Floral bearers were nieces and ladies of the church.

Bennie Carter
Bennie Carter departed this life on Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at Windsor Manor in Summerton after an extended illness.
He was born in St. Charles to the proud parents, the late Charlie and Rebecca Carter on Jan. 11, 1945. He attended public schools in Lee County where he was a great football player. He attended Unionville AME Church in St. Charles. In 1968, the family moved to Sumter. He found work at Williams Furniture Co. Later, he was employed by Burgess and Brogdon. He was last employed as a landscaper until his health failed.
Precious memories will be cherished by two brothers, Charlie (Clara) Carter and Roosevelt Carter; three sisters, Virginia Epps, Alice Roberson and Ruth Smith; seven nephews; two nieces; one grand-niece and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carrie.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Dec. 29, 2006, in the Sumter Funeral Services chapel.
Burial followed in Bradford Cemetery.
Friends of the family served as pallbearers and flower bearers.

E. Caroline Martin
E. Caroline Martin, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at a local nursing center.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Frank Oliver Martin and the late Vivian Kay Martin.
She was a lifelong member of Grace Baptist Church, where she served in the choir for 60 years, served on the Library committee and was the Program Director for her circle. She was a graduate of Furman University and took graduate courses at the University of South Carolina. She retired as a teacher in Sumter School District 17 after 38 years, mainly teaching at Crosswell Elementary School. She was a former member of the Sumter County Historical Society and a member of the Kay Family Association.
Surviving is a sister, Eleanor Martin Malion of Summerton; three nieces, Jackie (Tom) Olsen of Sumter, Kay Falk of Atlanta and Jenny (Steve) Loftis of Williamston; and numerous great-nieces and -nephews.
She was preceded in death by a niece, Mary Lynn Witherspoon.
The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to the staff at Morningside and to her sitters, Bertha, Geneva, Betty and Edna.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler officiating.

David C. Floyd
David Campbell Floyd, 41, died Friday night, Oct. 19, 2007, in Alcolu.
Born July 10, 1966, in Sumter, he was a son of Marianne Campbell Floyd and the late John William “J.W.” Floyd.
He was a machine operator for Kirven Communications in Sumter and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving besides his mother of Gable are a brother, John William “Bill” (Lynn) Floyd Jr. of Georgetown; and two nephews, Brett William Floyd of Clemson and John Owen Floyd of Georgetown.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. John Patrick officiating.
Burial followed in Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery in Barrineau.
Pallbearers were Marty Beatson, Gregg Beatson, Terry Tidwell, Robbie Turner, Lauren Kirven and Tommy McCants.
