Edward Williams Jr.
Edward Williams Jr., 57, husband of Adrenia Leaf Williams, died March 26, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born June 29, 1949, in Gable, he was the son of Rebecca Montgomery Williams and the late Edward Williams Sr. He was a devoted member and leader at Congruity Presbyterian Church. As a member of the church, he was a very active elder. He smiled easily and was a joy to be around and certainly never met a stranger.
He is survived by his wife, Adrenia Leaf Williams; his mother, Rebecca Williams; one daughter, Yaronda Williams; grandson, Camareyon Williams; granddaughter in love, Shaukhirah A. Austin; six sisters, Hattie (the Rev. Jonathan) Anderson of Alcolu, Lucille (the Rev. Larry) Davis, Louise Davis and Jackie Oliver, all of Sumter, Wanda (Redgey) Johnson of Summerville and Barbara (Robert) Wilson of Augusta, Ga.; three brothers, Ernest (Regan) Montgomery, Willie (Mary Ellen) Montgomery and Cecil Montgomery, all of Bridgeport, Conn.; eight sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; mother-in-law, Inez Leaf; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ruth Davis; two brothers, Jesse Montgomery and Willie Lee Williams; and father-in-law, Fletcher Leaf.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 31, 2007, at Congruity Presbyterian Church, Gable, with the Rev. William Jones Jr. officiating.
Burial was in Congruity Church Cemetery.

Kathleen D. Welch
Kathleen D. Welch, 80, died Sunday, April 6, 2008, at a Summerton nursing facility after an illness.
Born in Florence County, she was a daughter of the late Ervin Driggers and Isabell Welch Driggers. She was retired from Turbeville Manufacturing Co., and she was a member of Turbeville First Baptist Church, where she received the Smyrna Award in 2003; the Dicey Gibbons Circle; the Joyce Rogers Circle; and was a church nursery worker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Hagood Welch; a brother, Junius (Junebug) Welch; a stepson, Dewey Welch; and a stepdaughter, Winnie Derelee Robinson.
Surviving are two daughters, Geraldine (Allen) Coker and Shirley (Pinky) Lee, both of Turbeville; four sons, Alex (Mary) Welch of New Zion; Bennie (Gail) Welch of Cades; Larry Mitchell Welch and Terry (Karen) Welch, both of Turbeville; two sisters, Mary Strickland of Olanta and Marcelle Paige of Mount Airy, Ga.; four stepsons, Hagood (Hickey) Welch and James Linwood (Shorty) Welch, both of Santee, Donald (Pearl) Welch of Paxville and Bill Welch of
Georgia; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 21 step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 8, 2008, at Turbeville First Baptist Church.
Burial was in Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Vernell Ballard
SUMTER – Vernell Ballard, 67, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born March 18, 1941, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Jeff and Lillie Hammett Ballard. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. During his early years, he lived in Baltimore, Md., and Brooklyn,
N.Y. In his later years, he was employed with Dawn Landscapers for many years and at the Sumter County Museum.
Survivors include one sister, Magnolia (Simon) Evans of Westbury, Long Island,
N.Y.; one brother, John Henry (Geraldine) Ballard of Baltimore; one aunt, Lou Brown of Tabor City, N.C.; and one uncle, Marion Levy of Wilmington, N.C.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 13, 2008, at Mount Zion AME Church in Summerton, with the Rev. Dr. Willie J. Heggins, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Andrew Jackson Ammons Jr.
Andrew Jackson “Red” Ammons, Jr., 68, died Sunday, April 15, 2007, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born March 21, 1939, in Bryson City, N.C., he was a son of the late Andrew Jackson Ammons Sr. and the late Grace Lorraine Dehart Ammons. He was a member of the Army National Guard and was of the Protestant faith. He was formerly employed as a furniture worker.
Surviving are his wife, Jessie Mayzelle Fields Ammons of Summerton; three stepsons, Carl Turner of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Chris Turner of Florence and Craig Turner of Sumter; a stepdaughter, Sharon Miles of Summerton; and two brothers, Houston Ammons of Hickory, N.C. and James D. Ammons of Summerton.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 18, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kevin Cribb officiating.

Elmer E. Davis
Elmer Eugene Davis, 82, died Saturday, April 14, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born Feb. 15, 1925, in Marion, N.C., he was a son of the late Edgar and Elsie Clontz Davis. He was a retired carpenter and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a brother, Wilton Davis of Marion, N.C., and a number of nieces and nephews, to include a nephew, Terry (Melody) Davis of Alcolu.
A graveside service was held Monday, April 16, 2007, in the Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery in Alcolu with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating.

Nathaniel Johnson
Nathaniel Johnson, 69, died Saturday, April 21, 2007, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born July 8, 1938, in Clarendon County, he was a son of LouBertha Moorer Johnson and the late Pinckney Johnson. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church. Mr. Johnson was also a construction worker for many years.
Survivors include his mother, LouBertha Moorer Johnson; six brothers, John Johnson of Lois, Pinckney Johnson and Leon Johnson, both of Baltimore, Wilson Johnson of Statesboro, Ga., Kenneth Johnson of Hempstead,
N.Y., and Earl Johnson of Manning; and two sisters, Roberta Johnson Sabb and Constance Brooks, both of Manning.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 28, 2007, at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Rev. Ashley B. Vaughn officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Frank L. Ridgill
Frank L. Ridgill, 70, husband of Mary Bradley Ridgill, died Thursday, April 26, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Paxville, he was a son of the late Benjamin Ridgill and the late Nellie Kolb Ridgill. Mr. Ridgill was a retired building contractor and employed by Simpson Hardware. He was a Baptist.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Ray (Barbara) Ridgill, and Jimmy Ridgill; two daughters, Diane (Paul) Davis and Lynn (Jimbo) Russell, all of Sumter; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Jewel McGority of Sumter; and a number of nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ted Ridgill, Ed Ridgill and Richard Ridgill; and two sisters, Lizzie Ardis and Ruth Griffith.
Graveside services were held on Sunday, April 29, 2007, in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Turner officiating.

Allen T. Coker
Allen Thomas Coker, 61, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, in a Columbia hospital from injuries received in an accident.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Walker Rudolph Coker and Ollie Nettles Coker.
Mr. Coker was a member of Manning Baptist Temple. He enjoyed helping people with their yards and maintenance needs.
Surviving are three sisters, Betty Jean (Ned) Geddings of Turbeville, Eleanor (Dave) Boardwine of Effingham and Tammy Coker of New Zion; four brothers, Ronald (Dianne) Coker and Alpha Coker, all of New Zion, Raymond Coker of Turbeville and Alton (Linda) Coker of Sumter.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel.
Bural followed in the Gibbons Family Cemetery.

Annie G. Harvin
Annie G. Harvin, 91, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2007, at Hopewell Healthcare Center after an illness.
She was born July 15, 1916, in Silver, a daughter of the late Hattie B. Green and Judge Green.
In her early youth, she attended Mulberry Baptist Church and also attended Mulberry School. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Paul Harvin.
Her memory will be cherished by a sister, Elease Wilson; a brother, Julius (Delores W.) Green, both of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Wilson and Lucille Jones, and a brother, Peter Green.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, in the chapel of Sumter Funeral Service Inc. with the Rev. M.G. Walters officiating.
Internment followed in Walker Cemetery.
