Patricia Mae Vinnedge Ditson, 71, widow of Jesse Loyd Ditson, died Sunday, February 25, 2007, at her home in Alcolu.
Born May 15, 1935, in Berwin,
Nebraska, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Eva Pirnie Vinnedge. She was a homemaker, and a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Surviving are four sons, James L. Ditson of Alcolu, Mark Ditson and William Ditson of Niles,
Michigan, and Robert Ditson of Edwardsburg,
Michigan; two daughters, Mary Smith of Niles,
Michigan and Janice Vance of Alcolu; three brothers, Charles Vinnedge of
Indiana, Mike Vinnedge of
Kentucky, and Tom Vinnedge of
Indiana; three sisters, Evyline Finney of
Michigan, Delores McMahon of
California, and
Georgia Angeloff of
Florida; eighteen grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren.
Services were held privately.

Connie B. Etheredge
ELLOREE – Connie Brown Etheredge, 71, of Elloree, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at St. George Health Care Center, St. George, after an illness.
She was born in Berkeley County, a daughter of the late James Conrad Brown Sr. and the late Mamie Hiltan Brown. She was the widow of Guilford “Bubba” Etheredge. She and her husband owned and operated a floral shop in Elloree for many years.
Survivors include two sons, Steve Etheredge of
Indiana and Gary (Diane) Etheredge of Summerton; one brother, James C. Brown Jr. of Ocala, Fla.; two grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at the Magrill Family Cemetery in Elloree, with Pastor Harold Martin officiating.

Glenda D. Mathis
Glenda DuRant Mathis, 86, widow of Richard Curtis Mathis, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Joseph H. DuRant and the late Beulah Bracey DuRant.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the Women’s Afternoon Circle.
Surviving are a son, Len D. (Beth) Mathis Sr. of Manning; a daughter, Lucie M. (Warren) Moise of Mt. Pleasant; three grandchildren, Jared Barnhill, Lenny Mathis and Bracey Moise.
Graveside services were held on Friday, March 2, 2007, at the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Baynai officiating.

Ida Bell B. Billups
Ida Bell Burgess Billups, 46, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at her home.
Born Aug. 7, 1951, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of John Wesley Burgess and Lula Bell Conyers Burgess.
She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age she accepted Christ as her savior and joined Missionary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on the choir until her health failed.
Ida leaves to cherish her fond memories, her husband, John Billups of Paxville; a daughter, Thomasina Billups of Paxville; a son, John (Michele) Edward Burgess of Ashburn, Va.; her mother, Lula Bell Conyers Burgess of Paxville; her father, John Wesley Burgess of Louisburg, Tenn; five sisters, Virginia Canty, Loretta (Albert) Gamble and Celestine (Kenneth) Huggins, all of Sumter, Diane (Wayne) Ragin of Wedgefield and Letha (Al) Adams of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, John (Evangelist Susan) Burgess and James Larry (Linda) Burgess, both of Thomasville, N.C., and Robert B. (Inez) Burgess of Sumter; five additional sisters-in-law; three additional brothers-in-law; five grandchildren, Mel,
Maine, Nek, Meka and Quawn; five aunts; a close friend, Gladys Harris; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Margie Burgess, and a brother, Lennon Burgess.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 9, 2008, at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. E.L. Sanders officiating and the Revs. John Johnson and Larry Barnes and Bishop Leroy T. James assisting.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Isabella B. Hawkins
PATERSON, N.J. – Isabella Black Hawkins, 74, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital, Paterson.
Born April 1, 1933, in Pineville, she was the daughter of the late Lila Dupree and reared by the late Israel and Geneva Dupree Black. She accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Christ Temple Baptist Church, where she served on the Golden Hearts Club. She was a member of Passaic County African Women 100-Plus. She was employed with the Christ Temple Baptist Church as head cook.
She is survived by four daughters, Linda E. Black and Barbara Hawkins of Paterson, Lila M. McDonald and Lorraine (Johnnie Jr.) Thompson, both of Manning; two sons, Randolph Hawkins of Greensboro, N.C., and Wilbur Miller of Manning.
Graveside services were held on Friday, March 7, 2008, at Muldrow Cemetery in Manning, with the Rev. Gregory C. Turner officiating.

Darrick D. Epps
Darrick Darnell Epps, 13, died Thursday, March 1, 2007, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.
Born Nov. 10, 1993, in Columbia, he was a son of Darrick Lowery and Rachel Epps and stepson of Lonza Wilson. His maternal grandparents are Kenna M. Epps and Tommy Epps and his paternal grandmother is Polly Baxter. He was a student at Sneed Middle School, Florence.
Survivors include his parents, Darrick Lowery of Sumter and Rachel Epps of the home; stepfather, Lonza Wilson of Gable; grandparents, Kenna M. Epps of Gable, Tommy Epps of Lynchburg and Polly Baxter of Manning; one brother, Tyshawn Epps of the home; and three sisters, Rashelle and Nyiesha Epps of the home and Aniya Lowery of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Terry Lowery Sr.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel in Manning, with the Rev. William Jones Jr. officiating, assisted by Evangelist Rhonda Keels.
Burial was in Goodman Cemetery.

James B. LangJames B. Lang
James B. Lang, 61, died Friday, February 23, 2007, at his home in Manning.
Born February 5, 1946, in Akron,
Ohio, he was a son of the late William C. and Helen Jean Osborne Lang. He attained a bachelor’s degree in economics from N. C. State University and continued his education at the University of Akron. He was former director of Mental Health in
North Carolina until 1979, and retired as director of Public Relations and Marketing for Boy’s Village in Wooster,
Ohio. He was a former Eagle Scout, and was a master gardener through the Clemson Extension in Clarendon County, and wrote gardening articles for The Manning Times.
Surviving are two daughters, Anna Jean Lang Holmes of Manning and Virginia Elizabeth Lang of Lititz, Penn.; a sister, Jennifer Otterson of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a brother, Robert Lang of Cincinnati,
Ohio; and five grandchildren, Ricky, Erica, James and Rebecca Holmes and Keegen Dzurko.
A memorial service was held in Manning.

Donald Robert Contant
Donald Robert Contant Sr., 79, died Friday, March 14, 2008, in The Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg.
Born February 6, 1929, in Passaic, N.J., he was a son of the late Cornelius B. and Jean Zabriskie Contant. He was a retired air pilot engineer, past Commander for ten years of the American Legion Post 35 in Summerton. He was a United States Navy pilot veteran.
Surviving are two sons, Donald R. Contant Jr. of Navarre, Fla., and Thomas Reed Contant of Sarasota, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Sue Contant of Locust, N.C.; a sister, Barbara Reed of Jamesburg, N.J.; two granddaughters, Rebecca and Amber; and a great grandson, Gavin.

Idelle Sullivan Nesbit, 97, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, in Crowne Health Care of Greenville,
Alabama.
Born July 23, 1910, in Chesterfield County, she was a daughter of the late William Augustus “W. A.” Sullivan and the late Mary Frances Fincher Sullivan. She was married to the late George Albert Nesbit Jr., who died in 1991, a graduate of Berry College in Rome, Ga., and a member of Santee Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, George A. (Dean) Nesbit III of Boise, Idaho, Calvin W. (Jane) Nesbit of Columbia, and David T. (Brenda) Nesbit of Manning; a daughter, Mary Alice (Steve) McGee of Greenville, Ala.; a brother, Jimmy Sullivan of Augusta, Ga; twelve grandchildren, Nicholas, Jeffrey, Matthew, Paul, and Will (Crystal) Nesbit, Glen Arnsdorff, Debra (Mark) Atwell, Steve (LaRita) McGee Jr., Angela and Andrea McGee, Regina Phipps, and Rebecca Nesbit; thirteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Richard A. Nesbit of Boise, Idaho.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 14, 2008, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.
Burial was held in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia.

Mary D. Ellis
Mary Dingle Ellis, 67, widow of Sam Ellis Jr., died Wednesday, March 26, 2008, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born May 5, 1940, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late Talmadge and Emma Pearson Dingle. She received her formal education at Spring Hill School, Davis Station. She accepted Christ as her Savior and joined White Oak AME Church and later joined Clarendon Healing Temple, where she served faithfully as mother of the church and in many other capacities.
She is survived by two daughters, Felicia Ellis and Betty (Ronnie) Levy, both of Manning; three sons, James (Minnie) Dingle of Manning, Jimmy (Tonya) Ellis and Sammy Ellis, both of White Plains,
N.Y.; one sister, Maybell (Roosevelt) Wright of Manning; three brothers, Levi Dingle and Willie “Albert” Dingle, both of Charleston, and Moses (Dorothy) Dingle of Manning; 15 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Gloria Dingle, one great-grandchild, six brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 30, 2008, at Triumph the Church Kingdom of God of Christ in Manning, with Prince Sampson Pearson, presiding, Elder James Betrand, eulogist, assisting the Revs. David Lawson and Thomas Junior.
Burial followed in the Clarendon Healing Temple churchyard cemetery in Manning.

LYNCHBURG – Charles Gee died on Monday, March 24, 2008, after an illness.
He was born Feb. 15, 1956, to the late Stella and Elbert Gee of Sumter County. Later he moved to Paterson, N.J., where he attended Paterson public schools. He later returned to
South Carolina, where he lived until his death.
He leaves to cherish his memories: two daughters, Demetra Moses of Jackson, N.C., and Ta’re Moses of Woodland, N.C.; three grandchildren, Barkim Moses, Octavia Davis and Tiena Day of
North Carolina; two brothers, Freddie (Genet) Fulwood of Baltimore, Md., and Nathan Gee of Richmond, Va.; six sisters, Lue Faye (Jenkins) Suber-Gee-Edwards of Olanta, Annie R. Gee of Lodi, N.J., Joretha Gee of Paterson, Yvonne (Henry) Gee-Kennedy of Raspeburg, Md., Mary (Eusaw) Cousar of Richmond and Carter Jean (Junior) Prince of New Zion; a special nephew of the home, Zamier Gee; special friends, the Morant family; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 9, 2008, at Mount Zion Freewill Baptist Church in Olanta, with the Rev. Jimmy McGill officiating.
Burial was in the St. John United Methodist Church cemetery.

Kenneth Benjamin
Kenneth Benjamin, 39, died Saturday, March 31, 2007, in McLeod Hospice House in Florence.
Born January 17, 1968, in Houma, LA, he was a son of the late Kenneth and Ella Mae Hodge Benjamin, Sr. He was a truck driver for
Florida Rock and Truck Lines, and was of the Protestant faith.
Surviving are three sisters, Anna Anderson of Alcolu, Ruby Welch of Manning and Barbara Miles of Alcolu; seven nieces and nephews; and seven great nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, April 3, 2007, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with Dwayne Geddings officiating.
