J.B. Chatman
J.B. Chatman, age 82, died Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.
His wife was the late Josephine Taylor Chatman and he was the son of the late Pete Chatman and Estell Pack Chatman. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was honorably discharged. He moved to
New York and started working in construction, which led to Chats Construction, Queens,
N.Y., and Chats Fish Shop. After moving back to
South Carolina (Sumter), he started Chats Grocery. He was a faithful member of Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church.
J.B. Chatman is survived by four loving children, three sons, Willard Chatman and Irving (Delphine) Chatman, all of Sumter, and Joseph (Elfreda) Chatman of Queens; one daughter, Sharron Chatman of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Roy (Rena) Chatman of Manning; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three children and four brothers.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Presley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Major Lloyd and Terry Johnson Sr. and the Rev. Dr. Leon Winn.
Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Roger G. Wollmuth
Roger George Wollmuth, 66, husband of Alice Edna Mae Morris Childers Wollmuth, died Friday, June 15, 2007, at his home.
Born Nov. 8, 1940, in Sioux Falls,
Iowa, he was a son of the late Theodore and Dora Haines Wollmuth. He was a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of Pocalla Holiness Church.
Surviving besides his wife of Sumter are three daughters, Karen Morgan of Sumter, Marilyn Wollmuth of Lucedale, Miss., and Alice Childers of Columbia; two sons, Dannie Morris and Allen Childers of Sumter; two brothers, Paul Wollmuth of Sheldon,
Iowa and Richard Wollmuth of Sioux Falls,
Iowa; a sister, Jean Giesoff of Rock Rapid,
Iowa; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Pocalla Holiness Church with the Rev. Timothy Hudson officiating.
Burial with full military honors followed in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Hugh Conyers
Hugh Conyers, husband of Deborah Conyers, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 26, 2007, at Palmetto Health Richland, Columbia.
He was the son of Junious and Louise Smith Conyers of Silver.
Funeral services for Mr. Conyers were held on Sunday, July 1, 2007, at Trinity Baptist Church in Columbia.
Services were entrusted to Bostick and Thompson Funeral Home of Columbia.

Margaret C. Way
Margaret Chewning Way, formerly of Pinewood, widow of her husband of 66 years, James P. Way, died Thursday, July 5, 2007, in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.
Born Aug. 7, 1923, in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Leland F. and Alma Felder Chewning. She was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Beverly (Marshall) Morris of Sumter and Betty Lynn (Richard) Bradford of Homerville, Ga.; a son, James P. “Buddy” (Susie) Way of Pinewood; a brother, Rhinehart (Billie) Chewning of Holly Hill; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Chewning McLeod.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 9, 2007, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home in Sumter, with the Rev. Larry Kennedy officiating.
Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter.
Pallbearers were grandsons, Johnny Morris, Chad Morris, O’Shea Morris, Richard Koontz, Will Therrell and Whitney Ray.
Honorary pallbearers are nephews and nephews-in-law.

William T. Kennedy
William Thomas “Billy” Kennedy, 71, husband of Bonnie Eltz Kennedy, died Saturday, July 14, 2007, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born in Kingstree, he was a son of the late William Palmer Kennedy and the late O’Neal Duke Kennedy.
He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He was employed by Tomlinson Grocery Store in Manning, Sunbeam and Air Cap in quality control.
Survivors include his wife of Sumter; two sons, Tony Kennedy and his wife, Cindy, of Dallas, and Tommy Kennedy of Cross City, Fla.; a brother, Jerry Kennedy and his wife, Ruth, of Florence; a sister, Chris Litton of Cayce; a stepdaughter, Abi Burk of Dover, Del.; a stepson, Andy Celinskis of Harleysville, Pa.; and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Revs. Jerry Pickens and Murray Gibbons officiating.
Burial was in the New Zion United Methodist Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Roger Gerrald, Earl Fleming, Junior Davis, O’Neal Kennedy, Ryan Chadwick and Neal Kennedy.

George McKenzie
George “Buddy” McKenzie, age 72, husband of Catherine Kennedy McKenzie, died July 31, 2007, at Sumter Health and Rehab Center.
Born Dec. 15, 1934, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Ezekiel McKenzie and Olivia Rhodes McKenzie. He accepted Christ as his savior and joined Howard Chapel AME Church. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Kennedy McKenzie of the home; two daughters, Janie Mae McKenzie and Mary (Gregory) McKenzie, both of Gable; seven sons, Willie James (Hattie) McKenzie of Gable, Curtis (Patricia) McKenzie of Manning, Willie L. (Marilyn) McKenzie of Columbus, Miss., Tracy A. (Mary Ann) McKenzie of Dalzell, George E. (Loretta) McKenzie and Freddie (Vicky) McKenzie, both of Sumter, and Lincoln (Harritte) McKenzie of Andrews; two sisters, Sadie Ceasar of Manning and Shellie McKenzie of Gable; 20 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; grandchildren reared as his own, Trayshaun Q. McKenzie and Tyquan T. McKenzie, both of the home, and Kwai’Daja S. Ham of Gable.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and five brothers.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at Howard Chapel AME Church in New Zion, with the Rev. Alfred Bradley officiating.
Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Herbert W. Hudson Sr.
Herbert W. Hudson Sr., 71, beloved husband of Patricia Ann Bartlett Hudson, died March 4, 2008, after an extended illness of heart disease and diabetes.
Born in Sumter on May 16, 1936, he was a son of the late John David “Bozie” Hudson Sr. and the late Susie Atkins Hudson Bochette. He gave his life to the Lord Jesus Christ on Sept. 19, 2006, and for that we give God the honor and glory.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Herbert Hudson Jr. of Sumter and Donald Steven (Mary) Hudson of Walhalla; two daughters, Mary Frances (Jim) Demster and Brenda Louise Hudson, both of Sumter; nine grandchildren, Crystal (Jim) Hall of Pelzer, Terri Jennifer (Matt) Sestokas, Becky (Patrick) Ashford of Sumter, Jonathan Stidd of Killeen,
Texas, Andy Stidd of Augusta, Ga., Herbert “Bert” Hudson III, Eric Hudson of Manning, Courtney Hudson of Florence and Tucker Hudson of Walhalla; five great-grandchildren; five brothers, Jessie (Vivian) Hudson, John David Hudson Jr. of Sumter, Tommy (Brenda) Hudson, Mike (Sherrie) Bochette of Orangeburg and Butch (Regina) Bochette of Bear Creek, N.C.; three sisters, Henrietta Smith, Rosa Lee (John) Maslanko and Catherine (Thomas) Kraft, all of Sumter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Nathan Hudson; and two sisters, Leatha Truett and Susan Robinson.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 6, 2008, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Marion “Pete” Hudson, the Rev. Timothy Hudson, the Rev. Dale Turner and the Rev. G.W. Harrell officiating.
Burial was in the Pocalla Holiness Church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Glenn Harrell, Sammy Harrell, James Byrd Jr., Justin Hyatt, James Price Jr., Jonathan McFaddin and Kevin Ardis.

Hattie Mae Jones
VIRGINIA – Hattie Mae Jones died on March 5, 2008, at Westport Health Care Center.
She was born Nov. 14, 1946, in Summerton to the late Edward Jones Sr. and the late Rebecca Jackson Jones. She attended Scott’s Branch High School and later relocated to Brooklyn,
N.Y. It was in Brooklyn where she met and joined in matrimony to the late Walter Robert Jones Jr. This union was blessed with two children, Walter Robert Jones III and Miranda Sharon Lee LaVaughn. She joined the Tabernacle House of Prayer Church, where she was certified as a missionary. After living in
New York for 34 years, she relocated to Richmond, Va. She was a loving, devoted and giving wife, mother and grandmother, who was loved by all who knew her. She was very generous and will always have a special place in everyone’s heart.
She leaves to cherish her memories, her two children, Walter Robert (Stacey) Jones III and Miranda Sharon Lee (Gregory) LaVaughn, both of Richmond; a stepdaughter, Athena Felice Walker of Peoria, Ill.; two sisters, Linda (Dimitrios) Sabb and Aleatha Jones of Summerton; a brother, Edward Jones Jr. of Brooklyn; a sister-in-law, Blanche Elizabeth (Mike) Smith of Goochland, Va.; 11 grandchildren (including a special grandchild, Sharena); a host of nieces, nephews (including a special nephew, Johnny Ragin), cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 9, 2008, at St. Mark AME Church with the Rev. Ernest Brown, pastor, officiating.
Burial was in St. Mark Memorial Garden.

Alice R. Mahoney
Alice Leola Rhodus Mahoney, 72, wife of Linwood Ernest Mahoney Sr., died Monday, March 3, 2008, at her home in Manning.
Born May 29, 1935, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late James Wesley and Pearl Ardis Rhodus. She was a retired nurses’ aide, and attended Church of God of Prophecy of Alcolu.
She is survived by her husband of Manning; two sons, Ernie (Betty) Mahoney and Donnie (Neal) Mahoney of Manning; a daughter, Diane (Jeff) Benenhaley of Manning; a brother, Sonny (Debbie) Rhodus of Manning; a sister, Doris (Buddy) Rodgers of Sumter; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 6, 2008, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Rev. Raymond Barfield, the Rev. Tracy Benenhaley and Jeffery Benenhaley officiating.
Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
