Terrence Boatwright
Terrence Boatwright, 23, died Friday, April 21, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter County, on July 3, 1982, he was a son of Mary Jane Boatwright and the late Edmond Boatwright Sr. At an early age, Terrence attended Fellowship Baptist Church. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. He enjoyed working on cars.
In addition to his father, Edmond Boatwright Sr., he was also preceded in death by a sister, Hattie Turner; and a brother, Leroy Boatwright.
Survivors are his mother, Mary Jane Boatwright of Sumter; a daughter, Del’Shonyra Terriana Alize’ Boatwright of Sumter; six brothers, Edmond (Lillian) Boatwright Jr. of Manning, Eddie Lee (Ann) Boatwright of Columbia, Cyde (Patricia) Boatwright of Gable, James (Alicia) Boatwright and Minister George (Audrey) Boatwright, both of Sumter, and John (Judith) Boatwright of Charleston; seven sisters, Mary (Nathaniel) Osborne of Gable, Daisy (Alfred) Pearson, Rhunette (Buster) Eady, Anna Benjamin, Gloria McKnight, Janet Belser and Vertina (Timothy) Dinkins, all of Sumter; a special friend, Maurice Blanding of Sumter; eight uncles; five aunts; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends, who are deeply grieved by his passing.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at Fellowship Baptist Church, Manning, with the Rev. Johnathan Anderson, pastor, officiating.
Burial followed in the Fellowship Baptist Church cemetery.

Willie T. Briggs
Willie Thomas “Bill” Briggs, 67, died Monday, April 24, 2006, at a local nursing facility.
Born in Summerton, he was a son of the late Ruth B. and James Richardson Briggs. Mr. Briggs was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Pinewood and retired from Helena Chemical Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are one son, Joey Briggs of Sumter; one daughter, Tammy Lynn Briggs of Sumter; one brother, James Richardson Briggs of Summerton; two sisters, Annie Margaret Huggins of Florence and Ruth Spain Dobson of Sumter.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, in the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Pinewood with the Rev. David Thurlow officiating.

Joseph L. Brunson
PINEWOOD – Joseph Lewis “Pete” Brunson, 80, husband of Barbara London Brunson, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Mr. Brunson was born in Summerton, a son of the late Matt Eldridge Brunson and the late Josephine Alsbrooks Brunson. He was a retired farmer and once attended Bethlehem United Methodist Church.
Surviving besides his wife of Pinewood are two sons, Matt E. Brunson and his wife, Michele, of Pinewood and Joseph Lewis “Bo” (Lisa) Brunson of Manning; two daughters, Sharon Faye Brunson of Sumter and Margaret (Gregg) Kolb of Sumter; two sisters, Noonie Stukes and Joan Brunson of Summerton; a brother, Charlie E. Brunson Sr. of Davis Station; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
Graveside services were held on Friday, April 28, 2006, in Clarendon Memorial Gardens in Manning with the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating.

J.D. Cottingham Sr.
LYNCHBURG – John Dewitt “J.D.” Cottingham Sr., 84, husband of Betty Stokes Cottingham, died Monday, April 24, 2006, at a local nursing facility.
Born Sept. 7, 1921, in Salters, he was a son of the late Mitchell C. Cottingham and the late Mary Cole Cottingham.
He was reared in Williamsburg County, moving to Lynchburg in 1945, and worked as a farmer and cattle breeder. He was a member of Lynchburg United Methodist Church, and a longtime member of the Lynchburg Rescue Squad and the Lynchburg Volunteer Fire Department. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Pacific Theater and a member of the Lynchburg American Legion Post No. 140, where he served as commander for 25 years.
Survivors besides his wife of 25 years include four children, Dr. J.D. (Beverly) Cottingham Jr. of Myrtle Beach, Judith (John) Lawing of Tyler,
Texas, Charles “Chad” Cottingham Sr. of Lynchburg, and Wanda (Tom) Lucas of Myrtle Beach; two stepchildren, Michael Tomlinson and Debbie Tomlinson (Jerry) Bailey; four grandchildren, Marie (Steve) Samstag of Anderson, Chad (Jennifer) Cottingham Jr. of Lynchburg, J.D. “Witte” (Ginger) Cottingham III of Anderson, and Stacey (Dr. Gerald) Gray of Tyler,
Texas; seven great-grandchildren; four brothers, Mitchell Carodine Cottingham of Manning, Wallace Rudolph Cottingham of Georgetown, Ralph Elton Cottingham of Stateburg, and Dr. Walter Carlisle Cottingham of Kingstree; and four sisters, Eva Juanita C. Gordon of Georgetown, Doris Lee C. McCants of North Charleston, Margaret Emma B. Smith of Kingstree, Marilyn Elizabeth B. Summers and her husband, the Rev. Tom Summers, of Columbia.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, April 27, 2006, in the Lynchburg Presbyterian Church Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Ridenhour officiating.

Martha Davis
Martha Davis entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 20, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 1, 1921, in Clarendon County, to the late John Henry Reed and Florence Reed. She was joined in holy matrimony to Willie Lee Davis.
At an early age, she joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where she was a lifelong member. She enjoyed Sunday school and receiving God’s word. She also expressed a great love for gospel music.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Annie Reed.
Survivors include two daughters, Martha Lee (Alvin) Way and Ruth (John) Dingle; eight grandchildren, Sammy (Liza) Davis, Alvin (Angie) Way, Bertha Way, Jennifer Way, John Dingle Jr., Mary (John) Tindal, Cynthia Dingle and Christine Dingle; a brother-in-law; four sisters-in-law; 21 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services were held on Wednesday, April 26, 2006, with Pastor Lucreature Pugh officiating, assisted by other ministers.

H. Eugene Harrelson
Haskell Eugene Harrelson, 88, husband of Agnes McInnis Harrelson, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born June 13, 1917, in Green Sea, he was a son of the late Samuel Haskell Harrelson and the late Mattie Blanche Anderson Harrelson. He was a member of Clarendon Baptist Church, a retired farmer and a man who adored his family.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years of Alcolu; three sons, Samuel Haskell (Linda) Harrelson of Moncks Corner, Russell McInnis (Brenda) Harrelson of Alcolu and Michael Eugene Harrelson of Moncks Corner; a daughter, Melba Faye (Larry) Carraway of Sumter; a sister, Dorothy Harrelson Hawes of Elizabethtown, N.C.; 10 grandchildren, Denise (Jonathan) Jones, Heidi (Kevin) Acker, Russ (Dawn) Harrelson, Deena (Wesley) Boothe, Holly (Eric) Montalvo, Katie (Matt) Metz, Bryan Carraway, Alison Carraway, Oliver Harrelson and Jennifer Harrelson; six great-grandchildren; special caregivers, Lottie Gray and Hester Jackson.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 28, 2006, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Kirk Carlisle officiating.
Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens, Bloomville Highway, Manning.
Pallbearers were Kevin Acker, Wesley Boothe, Bryan Carraway, Russ Harrelson, Oliver Harrelson and Jonathan Jones.
Honorary pallbearers were the Men’s Bible Class of Clarendon Baptist Church.

Martha Huggins
Martha Huggins, daughter of the late Flander Green and Nora Green, was born March 10, 1911, in Summerton. She received her education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She grew up in a Christian home and, at an early age, she joined Taw Caw Baptist Church, where she served for many years and was a member of the missionary society. She was the widow of Junious Huggins. She lived in Miami, Fla., before moving to Summerton.
On Sunday, April 23, 2006, in the Lake Marion Nursing Home, where she was a resident for five months, God called her to her eternal home.
She leaves to cherish her sweet memories, her sister, Rena Mack of
North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 27, 2006, at Taw Caw Baptist Church with the Rev. W.T. Johnson officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Anthony F. Kennedy
Anthony Francis Kennedy, 58, died April 24, 2006, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.
Born Jan. 19, 1948, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Carrie Tomlin Kennedy and the late Willie Kennedy Sr. At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined Howard Chapel AME Church. He was a 1966 graduate of Walker Gamble High School.
Survivors include his mother, Carrie Tomlin Kennedy of the home; one son, Malik Ashhali of Charlotte, N.C.; three brothers, Junious (Irene) Kennedy of Baltimore, Md., Marshall (Belinda) Kennedy of Greenville and Albert Kennedy of New Zion; two sisters, Pearl Cousar of Gable and Cora Wheeler of Turbeville; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 29, 2006, at Howard Chapel AME Church in New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, presiding, the Rev. Carl Bennett Jr., eulogist, assisting the Rev. Carnell Hampton and Minister Willie J. Witherspoon.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

James McCray
James McCray, 72, died April 23, 2006, at his residence in Sumter.
Born on Feb. 25, 1934, in Clarendon County, he was the third oldest of 17 children born to the late Sampson McCray Sr. and Elizabeth Capers McCray. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County. During the early years of his life, he was a member of Scottiville Holiness Church and later joined St. Rest Holiness Church, Mayesville, where he served as a deacon, a member of the gospel choir and male chorus for many years, until his passing. He was a man of God who was a very dedicated worker in his church and the community. James worked on the farm and later for Florence Concrete Construction Co., where he gave 35 years of services until retirement.
In his kind and quiet manner, he made many friends. He will always be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father and brother.

Kidd and Mary (James) Chandler, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers, Willie Albert (Elouise) McCray of Newport News, Va., and Joseph (Mattie) McCray of Sumter; one aunt, Lillian Capers of Olanta; one uncle, Allen McCray of
Washington, D.C.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 10 brothers-in-law; 10 sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Albert, David, James Hugh, Sam Jr., and John Lee; three sisters, Robertha, Beulah and Pearl; and one grandson, Harry McCray.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 29, 2006, from the St. Rest Holiness Church in Mayesville, with the Rev. Tommy Doe, pastor, eulogist, assisted by Elder Lillie Witherspoon, the Rev. DeVon Wright, Elder James Doe, and Minister James Witherspoon.
Pallbearers were nephews and friends.
Floral bearers were nieces and friends.
Burial was in the Mayesville Cemetery, Mayesville.

Irene H. Rowe
ST. STEPHEN – Irene Hilton Rowe, 65, died April 24, 2006, in St. Stephen.
Born Nov. 27, 1940, in the Foreston section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Louise Hilton Mathis and stepdaughter of the late Raymond Mathis. She was reared by the late Frank and Elsie McGill. She received her formal education in the public schools of Berkeley County. She lived in Jersey City, N.J., and Miami, Fla., before moving back to St. Stephen.
Survivors besides her mother, Louise H. Mathis of Foreston, include one brother, James Otis (Kathie Mae) Mathis of Foreston; one sister, Mary M. Murray of Foreston; an adopted sister, Anyanette McGill Morant of St. Stephen; an adopted niece, Earnestine Middleton (Author) of
Washington, D.C.; four aunts; and one uncle.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Light Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Foreston, with the Rev. Handsome Major, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Fred Snyder.
