Thomas E. Hodge
Thomas Eugene Hodge, 88, husband of Rosalie Hudson Hodge, died Monday, June 28, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Harry Hodge and the late Belle Poplin Hodge. Mr. Hodge was a member of Providence Baptist Church, the St. Peter’s Masonic Lodge No. 54, the Order of the Knights of Pythias, the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the Sons of the American Revolution. He was a retired salesman with Life of Georgia Insurance Co. with 17 years of service.
Mr. Hodge was previously married to the late Marie Wells Hodge and subsequently to the late Ora Flowers Hodge and currently to Rosalie Hudson Hodge, who survives along with two daughters, Geraldine London and husband, Bill, of Chapin and Susan Hodge Davis of Seneca; a stepdaughter, Ellie Rae Rowland and husband, John, of Sumter; a sister, Mary Lee Lowder of Sumter; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lois Pack Hodge of Paxville.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Hodge Smith; and two brothers, Curtis Hodge and Dempsey Hodge.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 2, 2003, at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Harold P. Greene Jr. and the Rev. John Hall officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.

Jean Hohnecker Gavin
MACON, Ga. – Jean Hohnecker Gavin, 82, died Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at her residence.
Mrs. Gavin, wife of the late Charles M. Gavin III, was born in Dubuque, Iowa and was the daughter of the late George A. and Carrie Neumiester Hohnecker. She was a registered nurse, graduating from Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago and served with the Army Nurses Corps during World War II in England and France. Mrs. Gavin was a member of North Macon Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her son, Charles M. Gavin IV of Manning; two daughters, Nancy G. Mixson of Rockville, Md. and Carolyn G. Davis of Jackson, Tenn.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and her sister, Ruth Hohnecker of Dubuque, Iowa.
Memorial services were held on Friday, July 2, 2004, at North Macon Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mark W. Balthrop officiating.
Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.

James Cain
PHILADELPHIA – James “Buch” Cain, 82, husband of Louise Rheems Cain, died June 25, 2004, at Lankenau Hospital, Philadelphia.
Born March 31, 1922, in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County, S.C., he was a son of the late Willie Cain Sr. and Irene Dixon Cain. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he attended Antioch Baptist Church. He relocated to Philadelphia and became a truck driver.
Survivors include three brothers, Willie Cain, Robert (Viola) Cain and Jeffery (Denice) Cain, all of , S.C.; three sisters, Alreda Carter of Summerton, S.C., Daisy Fowlow of Manning and Ann Cain-Hall of Philadelphia; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, David Cain; and two brothers, Melvin and Walter Cain.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 3, 2004, at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, in Manning, with the Rev. Cornell Witherspoon, pastor of Mt. Chapel Baptist Church, officiating, assisting the Rev. Melissa W. Green and the Rev. Antonio Lee.
Burial was in Antioch Memorial Gardens.

Ruth Dunlap Cagle
STAR, N.C. – Ruth Dunlap Cagle, 87, died at her residence, in Seagrove, N.C., on Friday, July 2, 2004.
Mrs. Cagle was a native of Moore County, a homemaker and a member of Union Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, Carl M. Cagle of Summerton, S.C., and Robert E. Cagle of Mount Gilead, N.C.; seven grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 5, 2004, at Union Grove Baptist Church in Seagrove, N.C., at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Grady Blakely officiating.
Burial was in Union Grove Baptist Church, in Seagrove, N.C.

Johnny J. Brown
Johnny James Brown, 59, husband of Rosa Herring Brown, died June 28, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 14, 1944, in the New Zion section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Henry Brown Sr. and Eliza “Babe” Eaddy Brown. He received his education at Walker-Gamble High School, New Zion. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his personal savior and joined Howard Chapel AME Church.
Survivors besides his wife, Rosa Herring Brown of New Zion, include three sons, John H. Brown of Manning, Mack A. Herring of the home and Greg Brown of Baltimore; one daughter, Prelisha Brown of Baltimore; three brothers, Wilber (Bessie) Brown of Baltimore, Roosevelt Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Henry (Cornelia) Brown of Manning; four sisters, Hattie (David) Ingram of Olanta, Carrie Williams of Baltimore, Liza Mae (Eddie) Benjamin of Alcolu and Margaret (Bartell) Baker of Kingstree.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Abraham, Moses, McArthur and Michael Brown.
Funeral services were held on July 2, 2004, at Howard Chapel AME Church, Old Manning Road, New Zion, with the Rev. Edward Roberts, pastor, assisting the Rev. Jerome McCray.
Burial was in the churchyard cemetery.

Ronald Baxter
Ronald “Swan” Baxter, 70, died Friday, June 25, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born April 10, 1934, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ervin Connor and the late Lee Gardena Baxter. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Liberty Hill AME Church.
Survivors include a devoted cousin, Martha Rock of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a caring friend, Norine Brown of Summerton; and a host of other cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 3, 2004, in King Funeral Home Chapel with evangelist Edith Delaine officiating.
Burial was in Liberty Hill AME Churchyard Cemetery.

Joseph Marion Barwick III
Joseph Marion Barwick III, 40, of Columbia died Friday, July 2, 2004.
Born in Manning, he was the son of Joseph Marion Barwick Jr. and the late Mary Alice Way Barwick.
Surviving are a friend, John Antony Kitchen of Columbia; his father, Joseph Marion Barwick Jr.; a sister, Angie Barwick (William) Jordan; two nieces, Mary Ashley Jordan (Thomas) Huckaby and Amanda Paige Jordan, all of Manning; and a host of aunts, uncles and other loving relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday, July 7, 2004 at West Columbia Pentecostal Holiness Church on Platt Springs Road. Pastors Paul Miles and Morris Smith officiated.

Susanne M. Shaw
ELMIRA, N.Y. – Susanne M. Shaw, 47 of Elmira, died Wednesday, June 23, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Elmira.
She was born on March 6, 1957 in Ithaca, N.Y. and was a daughter of Phillip E. and Mary A. (Webster) Shaw.
Sue had a soft spot in her heart for animals, and often offered her loving care and assistance to animals in need.
Although unable to have children of her own, she adored her nieces and nephews and offered her motherly touch to children.
She is survived by her mother, Mary Shaw of St. James City, Fla.; a brother, Mike Shaw of Clyde, N.Y.; sisters, Debbie Borning of Hyannis, Mass., Pam Stephens of Manning, Tracy Shaw of Lodi, N.Y. and Karen Updike of Trumansburg; seven nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Phillip.
Visitation was held on Saturday, June 26, from 1-2 p.m. at Covert Funeral Home in Ovid, N.Y. A scripture service was then held at 2 p.m. at the funeral home on Saturday, officiated by Father William Winters, of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Ovid. Interment was held at Union Cemetery in Ovid.

Maretta L. Kimbell
FLORENCE – Maretta “Retta” Linton Kimbell, 52, of Florence, died Sunday, June 20, 2004, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mrs. Kimbell was born in Florence County, a daughter of Lonnie E. Linton Jr. and the late Margaret Leigh Mosley. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Mecca Chapter 278 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a grand officer in 1993-1994, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary No. 3131 in Florence, and Moose Lodge in Hartsville.
She is survived by her father and stepmother, Lonnie E. (Frances) Linton Jr., of Summerton; brother, Lonnie (Beverly) Linton III of Florence; three stepbrothers, Larry (Lisa) Miles of Sumter, Erwin Miles of Elloree and Hank Miles of Manning; a niece; and a nephew.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, June 23, 2004, at Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home. Burial followed at Mount Hope Cemetery.
