Chappell Windley
MYRTLE BEACH – Mr. Chappell Windley, 61, husband of Eula Simmons Windley, died May 5 at his residence in Myrtle Beach.
He was born Sept. 28, 1942, in Conway, S.C., the son of the late Thomas Gagun Windley and Anna Belle Moore.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Ida (James) Howard and Minister Lillie (the Rev. Clemons) Grant; two brothers, Mr. Otis E. Windley, the Rev. George P. (Linda) Windley of Manning; nine sisters, Annie B. Days, Ida Green, Dorothy (Charles) Trotter, Mary W. Greshman, Emma W. Session, Rosa (Vernon) Jackson, Emma L. Jackson, the Rev. Carolyn W. Braxton and Margaret (Henderson) Green; one grandchild, two great-grandchildren and 43 nieces and nephews.
Services were held Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at St. Peter Baptist Church in the Burgess community of Myrtle Beach. Burial was in Heaven’s Gate Cemetery at Murrells Inlet.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St. Peter Baptist Church Scholarship Fund, 5740 Salem Road, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29588.

Thomas Eugene Ward
Thomas Eugene “Gene” Ward, 73, husband of Jeanne Walker Ward, died Friday, May 7, in Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 12, 1931, in Dayton,
Ohio, he was a son of the late John and Margaret Tavner Ward. He was a retired truck driver and U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Surviving besides his wife of Summerton are a son, Steven Moore of Tipp City,
Ohio; a daughter, Holly Baker and husband, Jim, of Enon,
Ohio; three brothers, David Ward and Roger Ward of Dayton,
Ohio, and George Ward of
Kentucky; a granddaughter, Dannielle Baker; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

Mary G. Silver
Mary Griffin Silver, 80, died Friday, May 7, 2004, at Summerville Medical Center in Summerville.
Born Jan. 11, 1924, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Ervin Theodore and Marie Wells Griffin. She was a member of Summerton Baptist Church. Mrs. Silver was retired chief voucher auditor for the Civil Service, and former part-time secretary for Summerton Baptist Church.
Surviving are two sons, James Nelson Silver of Charleston and Stephen Phillip Silver of Fernandino Beach, Fla.; three daughters, Paulette S. Gemignani of Houston,
Texas, Donna S. Tharp of Charleston and Melony S. Aliffi of Marietta, Ga.; four sisters, Virginia Ardis, Jean Martin Bell and Kenny G. Avin, all of Summerton, and Lynn G. Watkins of Laurens; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held on Monday, May 10, 2004, in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Mellette officiating.

Samuel E. Rogers Jr.
NEW BERN, N.C. – Samuel Emory “Buddy” Rogers Jr., 68, husband of Catherine Scheibler Rogers, died Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at the Medical University of
South Carolina.
Born Nov. 30, 1935, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Samuel Emory Rogers Sr. and the late Edna Plowden Rogers. He was a graduate of Wharton School of Business and Finance at the University of
Pennsylvania and attended graduate school at N.C. State. He was a retired retail grocer with Foodland and Pak-A-Sak stores, a U.S. Navy veteran, and was of the Presbyterian faith.
Surviving besides his wife of New Bern, N.C., are two sons, Capt. Samuel Emory Rogers III of Hampton, Ga., and David Francis Rogers of Charleston; and a sister, Edna Rogers Rowe of Summerton.
Graveside services were held on Friday, May 7, 2004, in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.

Cinderella T. McKiney
SAN FRANCISCO – Cinderella Terrell McKiney, 81, widow of Sam McKiney, died April 30, 2004, at Laguna Honda Hospital, San Francisco.
Born July 2, 1921, in
Texas, she was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Terrell. She received her formal education from Excelsion High School. In her youth, she joined Missionary Baptist Church. Later, she joined St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess and Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include one godson, Vernon Mayberry of Richmond,
Calif.; two goddaughters, Carlene Henderson and Mary Dancer, both of San Francisco; and one sister, Estella Terrell of
Oklahoma City, Okla.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mercedes Terrell, and one brother, Jesse Terrell.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 8, 2004, at Antioch Baptist Church, Jordan community, with the Rev. Antonio Lee, pastor.
Burial was in Antioch Memorial Gardens.

Colee M. Lee
Mrs. Colee Myrtle Lee, age 82, died Tuesday, May 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center after an illness.
Born in Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Arthur McElveen and Iva Frye McElveen. She was raised by John and Rebecca Dorrell. Mrs. Lee was a retired state employee and a member of the Sumter Free Will Baptist of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Wylie Jordan and Talbert Lee; six brothers, Hubert McElveen, Carson Floyd, Elwood McElveen, Kenneth McElveen, Everett McElveen and Allen Floyd.
She is survived by three daughters, Frances (Goldwyn) Eaddy of Kingstree, Mary (Joey) Williams of Sumter and Martha (Tracy) Morris of Dalzell, with whom she resided for 18 years; three sons, John (Eddie Ruth) Jordan and Billy (Mauri) Jordan, both of Charleston, and Jimmy (Mary Ellen) Jordan of Olanta; one sister, Louise (Bobby Ray) Floyd of Lake City; five brothers, Wiley McElveen of Turbeville, James McElveen, the Rev. Jack McElveen, Jerry McElveen and Gordon McElveen, all of New Zion; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, May 7, 2004, at the Sumter Free Will Baptist of the Pentecostal Holiness Faith Church. Burial followed in the Camp Branch Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery.

Cecil Langston III
EFFINGHAM – Cecil “Chessley” Langston III, 43, died May 7, 2004, at his residence.
Born in Florence County, he was a son of Cecil C. Langston Jr. and Letida Eunice Strickland Langston of Manning. He attended South Side High School in Florence, was a retired carpenter and loved hunting and fishing.
Surviving, besides his parents, are a step-daughter, Teresa “Mickey” Tedder of Kansas City, Mo.; a stepson, Robbie Campbell of Kansas City; two sisters, Miranda Adams of Florence and Myra Jenkins of Bennettsville; and two step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel in Olanta with burial in Elim Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mary Vertelle Lambright
Mrs. Mary Vertelle Lambright, daughter of the late Mr. Frank Carter and Mrs. Janie Easley Carter, was born Aug. 1, 1917, in Clarendon County. She departed this life on Tuesday, May 5, at her home in Sumter.
She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County.
At an early age, she joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she attended faithfully until her health failed. She was a devoted missionary.
“ Mary,” as she was affectionately called by her family and many friends, was a loving and warm person that everyone loved. Her grandchildren describe her as the sweetest woman they have ever known.
The light of this beloved person will shine through her devoted granddaughter, Mrs. Essie Mae (Melvin Lee) Friday of Sumter; two loving grandsons, Mr. Lee (Johnnie Lee) Cobia Jr. and Mr. Willie Lee (Niecy) Cobia, both of Winston-Salem; seven great-great grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; and one sister Mrs. Victoria Campbell of Jacksonville, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy King Cobia; a grandson, Mr. Jimmy Harvin; two sisters and two brothers.
Services for Mrs. Lambright were held Monday, May 10, 2004, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, with Minister Irene Anthony officiating, assisted by the Pastor Rick Simmons and Minister Carnes Duren.
Burial followed in Hillside Memorial Park.

Johnnie L. Gilliam Sr.
Bishop Johnnie L. Gilliam Sr., 54, died Friday, June 18, 2004, at his residence, in Summerton. He was the husband of evangelist Rebecca Smith Gilliam.
Born in Edgefield on Feb. 9, 1950, he was a son of Ollie Gilliam and Thelma Burton Gilliam. He was a 1968 graduate of W.E. Parker High School in Edgefield. He continued his education in the Christian field of ministry. After moving to Clarendon County, he served as pastor at the following churches: Open Fountain of Summerton; founder of Christ Tabernacle for six years, Paxville; and Christ Tabernacle Outreach Mission Freewill of God, where he was presiding prelate and founder. He was the pastor of Prayer House Mission Church until the time of death.
Survivors include his wife of the home, Rebecca Gilliam; his parents, Ollie and Thelma Burton Gilliam of Edgefield; two sons, Master Sgt. Marvin (Nina) Gilliam of New Mexico and Elder Johnnie L. (Kim) Gilliam Jr. of Alcolu; two brothers, Michael (Vera) Gilliam of Columbia and Waynmon (Anterninetta) Gilliam of Summerton; five sisters, Lizzie Carroll of Edgefield, Grace (Leroy) Collier of Edgefield, Ruby Gilliam of Belvedere, Debra Bussey of Johnston and Christine (Johnny) Jones of Trenton; seven grandchildren; one stepson, Marvin (Patricia) Courtney of Greenwood; three godchildren, Kiona Bannister, Gladys Williams and Morgan Black; one brother-in-law; and four sisters-in-law.
Services for Bishop Gilliam were held on Friday, June 25, 2004, at Prayer House Mission Church, Davis Crossroad community. Burial was in the church cemetery. Elder Johnnie L. Gilliam Jr. officiated, assisted by Bishop Michael Pressley, Elder James Robinson, Elder Willie Spann, Elder Alvin Porcher and Mother Q.E. Bennett, overseer and founder.

Burnestine M. Fleming
SCRANTON – Mrs. Burnestine “Teenie” McFadden Fleming, 57, wife of Carlisle Fleming of the home, died Monday, June 21, 2004.
She was a daughter of the late Frank and Louise McFadden. She retired from Southern Empression as printer.
Survivors include one son, Jerry (Crystal) Fleming of Jacksonville, N.C.; two daughters, Tammie H. Smalls (Stacey) of Olanta and Sandra Fleming of the home; two brothers, Leon McFadden of the home and Elbert McFadden of Barrineau; four sisters, Janie McFadden, Annabell McFadden (Felix) and Deloris Wilson (Issac), all of Lake City, and Patricia McFadden (Elbert) of Columbus, Ga.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 25, 2004, at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, in Lake City, with the Rev. Robert Gabriel officiating.
Burial was in Old McFadden Cemetery, Lake City.
