Maude Z. Dow
LONG ISLAND,
N.Y. – Maude Z. Johnson Dow, 87, widow of Jesse James Dow, died July 16, 2004, in Long Island,
N.Y.
Born Jan. 17, 1917, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Sarah James Johnson. She was educated in the Clarendon County school system. As a child, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and savior while attending Antioch AME Church in Rimini. After migrating to
New York in 1941, she joined Metropolitan Community Methodist Church, where she was a member for 31 years. In 1974, she joined Allen AME Church under the leadership of the late Rev. (Bishop) Donald G.K. Ming. She was also a member of the Helping Hand.
She was employed by the
New York City Board of Education, where she retired after many years of service. Upon her retirement, she volunteered her services at the Allen Christian School, where she later became an employee for approximately 14 years. In addition to being an avid reader, she was a sports advocate and enjoyed watching the
New York Yankees, gymnastics and ice skating.
Survivors include her loving children, William Dow, Geraldine Valentine and Lorraine Dow; three grandchildren, Earnest, Darryl and Denise; two great-grandsons, Kyle and Jordan; two sisters, Sarah Canty of St. Albans and Louise Charles of Rimini; two brothers-in-law, Julius Dow of Servern, Md., and David Dow of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Sarah Wiggins of Bronx,
N.Y.; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Dow; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by four siblings, Simon, Robert, Emma and Rebecca.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Antioch AME Church, Rimini, with the Rev. Dr. S.R. Miott, pastor.
Burial followed in Antioch AME Church Cemetery.

Rita F. Caouette
Rita Flora Caouette, 80, widow of Louis Caouette, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born March 17, 1924, in Southbridge, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Edouard and Clara Desautels Lizotte. She was a retired lens inspector.
Surviving are a son, Robert R. (Deb) Corriveau of Manning; a sister, Lucille Surprenant of
New Jersey; a brother, Gerald Lizotte of Southbridge, Mass.; a grandson, Shawn Corriveau of Goose Creek; and a great-granddaughter, Courtney Corriveau.
A memorial Mass will be held on Friday, July 30, 2004, in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, North Grosvenordale, Conn.

Ethel Burgess
Ethel Annie Mae Preston Burgess, 77, widow of the Rev. Golden Burgess Jr., died July 18, 2004, at Hopewell Healthcare Center, Sumter.
Born Aug. 26, 1926, in Kingstree, Williamsburg County, she was a daughter of the late Walter Preston and Rebecca Redden Preston. She attended the public schools of Clarendon County. She accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined Cypress Fork AME Church, where she served faithfully in many capacities. In 1961, her husband was called into the ministry and she then served as first lady at the following churches: White Oak AME, Shiloh AME/Union Cypress AME Circuit and Santee and Oaks AME churches.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Lee (Sarah) Burgess of Chesapeake, Va., and General Lee (Lorraine) Burgess of Alcolu; one daughter, Renee (Welvin) Starks of Alcolu; two brothers, Walter Preston of
New York City and Leroy (Annie) Preston of Darlington; two sisters, Lubertha Hendry of Coatsville, Pa., and Malvenia (James) Hammett of Miami; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Livingston and Shakespear; and three brothers, James, Cleo and Clarence Preston.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 22, 2004, at Trinity AME Church, Manning, with the Rev. Leroy Green, pastor of Cypress Fork AME Church, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Rufus Gaymon, Franklin McCants and the Rev. Dr. George Hicks.
Burial followed in Cypress Fork AME Church Cemetery, in the Cypress Fork community of Alcolu.

Willie Pringle
Willie Pringle, 60, husband of Willie Mae Wilson Pringle, died June 16, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
Born June 17, 1943, in the Sammy Swamp section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Matthew Pringle Sr. and Hennie Riley Pringle and stepson of Annie Ruth Miller Pringle. His formal education was obtained at Millwood, Goodwill and Jordan elementary schools. In his youth, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior and joined Goodwill Baptist Church. He later joined St. John Baptist Church, Bloomville. He was an employee of SCDOT and retired after 31 years and eight months on July 1, 1997.
Survivors besides his wife, Willie Mae Wilson Pringle of the home and stepmother, Annie Ruth Miller Pringle of Manning, include four sons, Matthew (Cathy) Pringle III of Sumter, Jerome (Yvonne) Pringle of Bridgeport, Conn., Wayne (Wanda) Pringle and Quincy (Nikki) Pringle, all of Manning; one daughter, Janice (Chris) Pearson of Manning; three sisters, Geneva (Albert) Conway of Baltimore, Md., Eva (Willie) Frierson of Manning and Liza Huggins of Boston, Mass.; one foster sister, Geneva Huggins Pringle of Lake Butler, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; one brother-in-law reared in the home as his own, Joe (Annette) Thomson Jr. of Sumter; four grandchildren reared in the home as his own, Corey, Orion, Chinesa and Tylik.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Matthew Pringle Jr.; and one sister, Laverne Pringle Brown.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, June 20, 2004, at St. John Baptist Church in Manning, with the Rev. Otis Wright Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Calvin Burgess and Elder Shelly Hickson.

Sheryl K. Thigpen
CADES – Miss Sheryl Kaye Thigpen, 56, died Thursday, June 3, 2004, in a Florence hospital, after an illness.
Miss Thigpen was born in Sumter, a daughter of the late Rev. John Hugh and Azalee Bennett Thigpen. She was a graduate of Johnsonville High School and the owner and operator of Sheryl’s Style Center. She was a member of Floyd Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Johnny (Jo) Thigpen of Lake City and William (Sondra) Thigpen of New Zion; one sister, Phyllis (Dale) Coward of Coward; eight nieces and nephews, Michelle Beard, Julia Ann Holsonback, Rebecca Holsonback, and Tamara Bryant, all of Lake City, Lynn McGee of Scranton, Johnny Thigpen Jr. of Cades, Christopher Coward of Coward and William Thigpen of Turbeville; and seven grand nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 5, 2004, in Floyd Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Joseph DuBose
Mr. Joseph Edward DuBose Sr., age 78, died April 24, 2004, in Sumter.
Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Ernest Edward DuBose and Sudie Baird DuBose. Mr. DuBose was retired from Santee Print Works. He was a member of the Black River American Legion Post and attended Olanta Pentecostal Holiness Church.
He is survived by two sons, Ernest Edward DuBose and Willie Joe (Roseann) DuBose, both of Sumter; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Baird DuBose.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 27, 2004, at Floyd Funeral Home Chapel in Olanta, with burial in Olanta Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home.
Clarence L. Miles
Clarence L. Miles, 65, died Saturday, April 10, 2004, at Western Wake Cary Hospital in Cary, N.C.
Born in Sumter, S.C., he was the son of the late Albert L. Miles and the late Leatha Floyd Miles.
Mr. Miles was retired from
North Carolina Steel.
Surviving are a wife, Bell Miles of Apex; a son Luke Miles of Sumter; a daughter, Joye (Ricky) Webster of Manning, S.C.; two brothers, Jasper Floyd of Sumter and D.D. Miles of Manning; a sister, Oree Watford of Sumter; two stepdaughters, Leatha Morris and Tonya Page of Apex; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Reverend Reese Miles officiating.

Joe Mack
Elder Joe Mack, 79, husband of Ruthie Mae Copeland Mack, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born May 18, 1924, in Mayesville, he was a son of the late Henry and Agnes Coleman Mack. His early Christian training was received at St. Peter AME Church in Mayesville. He was appointed pastor at St. John Apostolic Holiness Church, Sumter, where he served until his death.
Survivors include his stepmother, Louise Mack of Sumter; one son, Clifton (Shirley) Mack of Manning; seven daughters, JoAnn (Norman) Manning, Bettie Mack-Robinson, Evelyn Davis, Jacqueline (Minister John H.) Turner, Vandretiss Sharper-Fanning, all of Sumter, Denease (John E.) Grinnell of Columbia and Renae (Garland) Brown of Elgin; 26 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Henry (Pennie) Mack of
New York City; one stepsister, Berlie Taylor and one stepbrother, Carnell Spann, both of Lynchburg; three stepsons, William Copeland, Herbert Copeland Jr. and Leroy (Gail) Copeland, all of Sumter; three stepdaughters, Cynthia Copeland and Deborah Copeland, both of Sumter, and Joann Copeland of the home; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Christine Benjamin Mack; two sisters, Emma Mack and Albertus Favor.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 9, 2004, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor, and Bishop Tommie Doe officiating, assisted by Ministers Terry Law and John Turner.
Burial was in Mayesville Cemetery.

Willie L. Bannister
BROOKLYN,
N.Y. – Willie L. Bannister, 54, died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Kingsbrough Hospital in Brooklyn.
Born in Clarendon County on March 12, 1949, in the Summerton community, he was a son of the late Nelson Bannister Sr. and Lillie Mae Dow Bannister.
He attended the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he was a member of Taw Caw Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, Melvin Bannister of Conway; three sisters, Frances Bannister and Janet B. Junius, both of Summerton, and Lila Mae (Raymond) Green of Brooklyn.
Graveside services were held on Monday, April 13, 2004, at Ivory Cemetery in Davis Station.

Louis M. Nelson
Louis Melvin Nelson, 71, died Sunday, March 28, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born March 30, 1932, in
New York City, he was a son of the late Samuel George and Cassie Marshan Wright Nelson. He attended the public schools of
New York City. Upon graduation, he entered into the United States Armed Forces and received an honorable discharge on Oct. 31, 1960. At an early age, he joined Metropolitan Community United Methodist Church,
New York City, where he became the organist and pianist for several years. He began his working career with the United States Department of Treasury in the U.S. Customs Department at the World Trade Center,
New York, in the seized property division, where he retired after more than 40 years of service to his government.
Survivors include one sister-in-law, Virginia Price Nelson of Chester; one niece, Bessie Yvonne “Cukye” Nelson of Sumter; one nephew, Louis Maceo (Michelle) Nelson Sr. of Spartanburg; one great-nephew, Louis Maceo Nelson Jr.; one great-niece, Wanda Antoinette Nelson of Sumter; one great-great-niece, NyAsia Marshan; two great-great-nephews, Demetre’ Napoleon and Nigel Naseen; and a host of devoted relatives, friends and neighbors.
