Marie B. Ballard
Marie Bosier Ballard, 48, of 12 Annie Tindal Road, Clarendon Court, Apt. 2-H, entered eternal rest Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital, Columbia.
Born Feb. 12, 1956, in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Lee Bosier and Virginia Watson Bosier. Marie was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a member of Mt. Pleasant UME Church. She was employed as a sewing machine operator for Kay Cee Inc., Manning.
Survivors include three sons, Allen (Athenia) Bosier, Quentin Ballard and Terrence Ballard of Summerton; one brother, Alphonso Bosier of Summerton; six sisters, Rosa Bell (James) Kind, Veneva Sinkler, Lucille B. (Elder Albert) Thomas of Summerton, Annie L. Felder of Manning, Dorothy (Fred) Walker, of Clinton, and Catherine Watson of Columbus,
Ohio; two grandchildren, Lamarkus D. Bosier and Alexis M. Bosier.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee Bosier; and a sister, Mary Jane Felder.
Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 21, 2004, at My Father’s House Pentecostal Church. Bishop Raymond Holiday, the Rev. James O. Robinson and Apostle James H. Carter officiated the service.
Burial followed in Mt. Pleasant UME Church Cemetery, Summerton.
Community Funeral Home of Sumter was in charge of arrangements.
Destiny Aalyah Thompson
DALZELL – Infant Destiny Aalyah Thompson, 6 months and 30 days, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born July 13, 2003, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia, she was the daughter of Suzette Kennedy and granddaughter of Rebecca River Kennedy of Summerton.
Survivors, besides her mother and grandmother, include a brother, Sheldon D. Conyers of the home; a sister, Precious T. Thompson of the home; four uncles; five aunts; and eight grandaunts.
Services were held on Monday, Feb. 16, 2004. The Rev. Carnell Hampton, pastor, officiated the service.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Joseph Richburg
Mr. Joseph Richburg, 64, husband of Mrs. Annie Mae Richburg, died Feb. 11, 2004, at his residence.
Born Sept. 26, 1939, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Mr. Joseph Richburg Sr. and the late Mrs. Estelle Martin Richburg. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. Mr. Richburg served his country as a member of the United States Army. Following an honorable discharge, he moved to
New York and was employed with Marvel Undergarment until he retired. He later returned to
South Carolina in 2000.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Mazie Oliver of Queens,
N.Y.; five sisters, Rovena Davis of Sumter, Gladys Bowman and Theo Cameron of Manning, Oree Richburg of Arverne,
N.Y., and Eloise Davis of Jersey City, N.J.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Manning. The Rev. Ashley B. Vaughn, officiated the service, assisted by Lee Harvin and Evangelist Dorothy Thames.
Burial followed in Elizabeth Baptist Church Cemetery.

Richard C. Player
Richard Calvin Player, 40, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Hospital in Sumter.
Born in Sumter, he was the son of Mac C. Player and Kay Yates Player. He attended First Church of God and was formerly employed by Prothro Chevrolet in Manning. His hobby was stock car racing.
Survivors, besides his parents of Sumter, include two sons, Ricky Player and Ryan Player of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Shannon Joye.
Services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. The Rev. Ron Bower officiated the service.
Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Emaline M. Nimmer
Emaline M. Nimmer, 90, died on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004, at her residence in Charleston.
Born Oct. 8, 1913, in Summerton, she was the daughter of the late Abraham and Rosa Stephens Nimmer. Miss Nimmer received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy after WWII and returned home to Summerton to manage the family businesses. Upon retirement in 1977, she moved to Charleston to be close to her family.
Survivors include her niece, Rose Marie (Tom) Finnegan of Charleston, great-nephew, Thomas (Ashley) Finnegan of Austin,
Texas and their sons Thomas and William; great-niece, Stephanie (Jack) Shackelford of Charleston and their daughter Emaline. She was preceded in death by her brothers William, Thomas and John Nimmer and a sister Marie N. Conroy.
Services were held Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charleston. Burial followed in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Julius McCray
Julius “Soup” McCray, 66, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born April 2, 1937, in the Potato Creek section of Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Chappell McCray and Irene Wilder McCray. He received his education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, he joined St. James AME Church. He lived in
New York for years, where he was self-employed with a demolishing business. After moving back to Manning, he attended Mt. Zion AME Church.
Survivors include one son, Julius McCray Jr. of
New York City; three daughters, Dana (David) Jones of
New York City, Irene Christian of Manning and Tracy McCray of
New York; two brothers, Chappell McCray Jr. and James Frank McCray of Manning; seven sisters, Sarah McKnight, Dorothy (Charles) Smith, Helen Hammett, Eliza (Edward) Becton, Annie (Milton) Carr, Shirley (Micheal) Levy and Barbara McCray of Manning; those he reared as his own, Chanell Christain of Manning, Bobbie Best of
New York City and Spooter Gilyard of
New York City.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas McCray.
Services were held on Friday, Feb. 13, 2004, at Historical Mt. Zion AME Church, M.W. Rickenbaker Road, Camp Bob Cooper section of Clarendon County. The Rev. Dr. Willie J. Heggins, pastor, officiated the service with Elder Sampson Pearson as eulogist.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Ella D. Johnson
BROOKLYN,
N.Y. – Ella Dukes Johnson, 87, widow of McKinley Johnson, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, at Brooklyn Hospital, Brooklyn.
Born Nov. 16, 1916, in the Greeleyville section of Williamsburg County, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie Franklin and the adopted daughter of Buggie Dukes and Mary Reid Dukes. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. In her youth, she joined Reeseville AME Church, where she served on the missionary society.
Survivors include one son, James (Jennifer) Dupree of Brooklyn,
N.Y.; two daughters, Carolyn G. Crockett of Brooklyn,
N.Y., and Dorothy D. Williams of Goose Creek; one brother-in-law, Julius Daniel of Sumter; three sisters-in-law, Vernice Dukes of Manning, Julia Dukes of Sumter and Hattie Hardy of Brooklyn,
N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at Reeseville AME Church, in Alcolu. The Rev. Marie Harvin, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by Minister William Dukes.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mella Mae B. Alston
Mrs. Mella Mae Brock Alston departed this earthly life on Monday, March 8, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born in Clarendon County on Dec. 26, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Luther S. and Mrs. Carrie Mack Brock. Mrs. Alston was educated in the public schools of Manning and Sumter. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School and Morris College. She completed further studies in cosmetology. Later, she was employed as a long-distance telephone operator for the AT&T Telephone Co. in
New York.
She was a lifelong member of the St. Matthew Baptist Church and served faithfully wherever her gifts and talents were needed. While residing in Brooklyn,
N.Y., she was a member and manager of the former Triumph Gospel Singers. In 1990, she returned to the Sumter community, where she enjoyed growing beautiful flowers, gardening and singing. Next to her love of God was her devotion to her husband, whom she loved dearly. In 2000, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the IBG Daycare Center in Sumter, surrounded by loving and supportive family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Martin Luther, John E., James A. and Edward S. Brock.
Survivors include her beloved husband, James H. Alston of Sumter; two brothers, Lincoln C. (Ruth) Brock of Sumter, Beauregard (Flossie) Brock of
New York; two sisters, Agnes B. (Clinton) Bullock of Fort
Washington, Md.; a sister, Inez B. (Jasper) Goodman of Sumter; a foster sister, Doretha Sinkler; a godchild, Phylicia Rene Goodman (and her father, Ray Idan, were named by “Mae”) of Sumter; a host of nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law, Lena, Corine and Dorothy, all of
North Carolina, and Mary of Boston; brothers-in-law, Willie of Boston, Sexton of
New York, George of
North Carolina and Tom Alston of Maryland; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at St. Matthews Baptist Church. The Rev. M.G. Walters, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. James A. Blassingame.
Burial followed in the Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

Cornie M. Johnson
Mr. Cornie Monroe Johnson, 85, departed this earthly life on Monday, April 26, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter, as he entered eternal rest with the Lord.
He was born March 27, 1919, in Horry County, to the late Mr. Monroe Johnson and Mrs. Ella Montague Johnson. Early in his life, Mr. Johnson attended area churches in Horry County and was educated at Cedar Creek School in Horry County. Mr. Johnson was twice married, first to the late Mattie Fullard and after her death, he met and married Mrs. Flossie Stokes Johnson.
Survivors include 19 children, Mrs. Mary Francis (Eddie) Ford, Mr. Ulysses (Casey) Ford, Mrs. Mattie J. Smith, all of Tampa, Fla., Mr. Booker T. (Anntte) Ford of

He was preceded in death by two children, Douglas and Harrison Johnson; three brothers, Nealy Nance Johnson, Ivory Johnson and Cordie Johnson; two sisters, Mrs. Inez Wilson and Mrs. Flora Reeves.
Funeral service were held on Saturday, May 1, 2004, at Faith Enterprise Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Elton Ford. Burial will follow in Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery, Pinewood.
