Maurice Franklin Manuel
Maurice Franklin Manuel, 82, of Front Royal, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2004, in Warren Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Manuel was born, Feb. 6, 1921 in Browntown, Va., son of the late Frank Manuel and Laura Morrison Manuel. He graduated from Warren County High School and was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 127th Infantry in Japan. He retired from Forsyth’s Hardware Store after 35 years of service.
He was a lifetime member of the Browntown Baptist Church and served as a deacon and trustee for many years.
On Aug. 19, 1944, he married Florence (Dibby) Shaefer Manuel, who survives. Other survivors include three sons; Wallace (Eileen) Manuel of Front Royal, Chris (Peggy) Manuel of Browntown and Alan (Claudia) Manuel of Riverhead,
N.Y.; one daughter Honri (Frank) Jones of Manning; 12 grandchildren, Ryan, Matthew, Brady, Laura and Weston Manuel; Laura, Nancy Margaret and F.B Jones; Leigh Stansfield; Daniel, Stephen and Joseph Colvin.
Services were held at Maddox Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004. Dr. C.C. Crank and Dr. Michael Normoyle officiated the service. Burial followed in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Flynn King
Flynn King, 51, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at his residence, 1067 Blossom St., Manning.
Born July 7, 1952, in Manning, he was the son of the late Henry W. King Sr. and Merie L. Bradshaw King. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1970 graduate of Manning Training School. He was also a graduate of Williamsburg Technical College, Kingstree, in brick masonry. He was a member of William Chapel Church and a retired brick mason instructor with the Clarendon schools.
Survivors include four sons, Corie King and Tyron Space of Manning, Russell (Nita) Carroway of Queens,
N.Y., and Todd King of Ft. Stewart, Hinesville, Ga.; two brothers, Henry (Barbara) King and George (Mary) King of Manning; one sister, Gwendolyn (Billy) Smith of Manning; and three grandchildren.
Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 at William Chapel Church. The Rev. Emanuel Evans, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Rev. Carnell Witherspoon. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Allan L. Edwards
Allan Lee Edwards, 71, husband of the late Naka Sasako Edwards, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Hospital.
Mr. Edwards was born in Batavia,
N.Y., son of the late Carlyle Wilson and Juanita Aldridge Edwards. He was retired from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service and served during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. He later retired from Santee Print Works. He attended Bethesda Church of God.
Survivors include three sons; Kenneth (Cheryl) Edwards of Sumter, James Edwards of Burtonsville, Md., and John (Becky Choi) Edwards of Alexandria, Va.; four daughters, Joyce (Tommy) Welch of Manning, Kathy Edwards of Knoxville, Md., Barbara Edwards of Leesburg, Va., and Sarah (Richard) Krish of Sumter; four sisters, Marilyn Snyder, Carolyn Parton, Evelyn Krauss and Jean Farrar, all of
N.Y.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife and parents.
Services were held Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Bethesda Church of God. The Rev. Al Sims officiated the service. Burial followed at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors.

Ella M. Calvin
Ella Murray Calvin, 79, widow of Jasper Calvin, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born Oct. 27, 1924, in the Harmony section of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late George Murray and Charity Hilton Murray. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. At an early age, she joined Green Hill Baptist Church, where she served faithfully on the gospel choir and in any capacity needed.
Survivors include two sons, James (Christine) Calvin of Kingstree and Samuel (Annette) Calvin of Manning; an adopted son, William “Bubba” (Linda) Grant of Alcolu; five daughters, Lillie M. Holmes of Charleston, Alice Lewis, Deloris (Lester) Lemon, Marilyn (Jimmy) Hilton of Manning; Alexandria Cousar of Alcolu; an adopted daughter, Evonne (Tony) Tindal of Manning; 26 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Ernest “Bo” Murray and Harry L. Calvin; a brother, Collin Murray; and a sister, Alice Grant.
Services were held on Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Greenhill Baptist Church, Alcolu. The Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, officiated the service, assisted by the Revs. W.J. Frierson, David Woods and Minister Major Lloyd. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Charles M. Barrett
Charles M. “Dick” Barrett, 88, died Sunday morning in Lake Marion Nursing Facility in Summerton.
Born Nov. 14, 1915, in Manning, he was a son of the late Charlie Bass and Mary Lloyd Barrett. He was a retired civil service commissary clerk at Shaw Air Force Base, a U.S. Army veteran, and a member of Manning First Baptist Church.
Surviving are four sisters, Margaret Windham of Florence, Mary E. Tennant of Sumter, Grace Hodge of St. Matthews and Dorothy Coker of Alcolu; two brothers, Harry E. Barrett of Manning and Willis C. Barrett of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, with the Revs. Carey McElveen and Morris Smith officiating. Burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Betty Ann Tilton
Betty Ann Tilton, 57, wife of Roy Patrick Tilton Sr., died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at her home in Manning.
Born April 21, 1946, in Manning, she was the daughter of James Wesley and Stella White Rhodus.
Survivors include, besides her husband of Manning, include three sons, Roy P. Tilton Jr., Robert James Tilton and Donald Eugene Tilton of Manning; two sisters, Margaret Sinner of Columbia and Betsy Barker of Manning; two brothers, Donnie Rhodus of Columbia and Ashley Rhodus of Manning; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Stephen Bowe officiated the service.

Alvin Vaughn
COLUMBIA – Alvin Vaughn, 59, died April 22, 2004, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center.
Born Sept. 30, 1944, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Willie B. Lemmon Vaughn and the late Frank Vaughn Sr. He attended Eastern High School, where he graduated in 1962. At an early age, he became a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. In 1965, he joined the United States Armed Forces, where he served two years. After serving his military term, he relocated to
New York for a number of years. He later returned home to
South Carolina.
Survivors besides his mother include one son, James (Sharon) Fullard of Sumter; three sisters, Betty (Jonathan) Gamble of Lynchburg, Rugena (Henry) Thomas and Zenobia Vaughn, both of Columbia; seven brothers, Frank Vaughn Jr. of Stamford, Conn., Eddie (Mary) Vaughn of Detroit, and John (Margie) Vaughn of Paxville, Willie Vaughn, Furman Vaughn, Herman (Francine) Vaughn and Roland (Annette) Vaughn, all of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Lawrence Vaughn.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Asbury United Methodist Church, Lynchburg, with the Rev. James R. Cannion, pastor, assisted by the Rev. Zander Davis.
Burial was in Goodman Cemetery.

Donnie H. Atkinson Sr.
Mr. Donnie Hugh Atkinson Sr., age 83, died Feb. 8, 2004, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Born in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late William Thomas Atkinson and Ethel Corrine Morris Atkinson. Mr. Atkinson was a retired building supply coordinator with Coker Builders, was a U.S. Navy veteran, was former mayor and town councilman for the city of Turbeville, and was awarded Turbeville’s Citizen of the Year in 1985. He was a member of the Turbeville Ruritan Club, where he served as secretary; was a member of Douglas Post of the American Legion, and a 55-year member of the Fidelity Masonic Lodge No. 394, where he served as past master. He was a member, a deacon, and guardian of the Turbeville First Baptist Church for 53 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlen Floyd Atkinson; and a sister, Etheleen A. Thomas.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Nell (Jerry) McElveen of New Zion and Carol (Freddie) Parker of Turbeville; two sons, Donnie H. (Cynthia) Atkinson Jr. of Cades and the Rev. Tommy (Faye) Atkinson of Sumter; three sisters, Rhoetta Oliva of Columbia, Lois Coker and Sylvia Jean Thomas of Turbeville; six brothers, Glellan Atkinson and Charles Atkinson of Turbeville, Billy Atkinson of Scranton, Cecil Atkinson of Manning, Bobby Joe Atkinson of Andrews and J.T. Atkinson of Barnwell; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Helen Gibson of Florence.
Services were held on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at the First Baptist Church of Turbeville. Burial followed in the church Cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta.

Albert W. Vaughn
Deacon Albert W. Vaughn, 78, husband of Mrs. Mamie Lee Vaughn, departed this earthly life on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
He was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was the son of the late Mr. Arthur Vaughn and Mrs. Mary Lou Vaughn.
He served dutifully and faithfully on the deacon board until his health failed. He also served on the senior choir and was a member of the Brotherly Love Masonic Order No. 99. He was a member of Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors beside his wife include three daughters, Mary Bailey, Bertie (Larry) Budden, both of Sumter, and Gladys (Warren) Barnabas of Brooklyn,
N.Y.; one son, Vinson (Diane) Vaughn of Sumter; an adopted daughter, Peggy Laws of Sumter; two sisters, Berline Bartholomew of Philadelphia and Bernice Hodge of Newport News, Va.; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a very special friend of the family, Olethia King of Sumter; five sisters-in-law, Thelma Cole, Lillian Choice, Minnie Ford, and Clara Ford, all of Sumter, and Phyllis Ford of
New York City; four brothers-in-law, Joe Bartholomew of Philadelphia, Thomas Ford of
New York City, Luther Ford and Clemond Ford of Sumter.
Two sons, Willie Vaughn and Larry Vaughn, preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Mr. Vaughn were held on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2004, at Rock Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. M.G. Walters, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Leo Winn. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

Ulysses Thompson
Ulysses Thompson Sr., 66, husband of Mrs. Alberteen Thompson, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at his residence.
Born Jan. 30, 1938, in the Live Oak Community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late James
Washington Thompson and the late Katie Gibson Thompson.
His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and F.E. DuBose Career Center. Prior to his employment with Travels Center of America, Mr. Thompson was employed with Sunbeam Corporation for 18 years.
Survivors include a son, Ulysses (Reatha) Thompson of Manning; five daughters, Lucille (Henry Lee) Wilson, Ella Mae (Blanding) Goines, Minnie T. (Kenneth) Neal, all of Manning; Faye (Michael) Ragin of Paxville and Barbara (Charles) Williams of Sumter; two sisters, Josephine (Willie) McCray of Manning and Knenite (Clarimount) Goines of Sumter; 20 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a mother-in-law, Mrs. Katie Martin of Manning.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004 at Mount Zero Missionary Baptist Church on Paxville Highway in Manning with the Rev. Dr. C. Richburg, the Rev. Robert Gibson, the Rev. Terry Johnson and the Rev. Dr. Herman Gibson Sr. officiating.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
