Marguerite Rigby
Marguerite Rigby, 86, died Wednesday, February 12, 2003, in Tampa,
Florida.
Born in Manning, she was the daughter of the late John Horton and Cammie Harvin Rigby. She received her bachelor of art degree from Winthrop College in
South Carolina and was Methodist by faith. She served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1953. She moved to Tampa in 1956 and was employed as executive secretary for the chief of police until her retirement in 1986, receiving high honors for her dedication and loyalty to the Tampa Police Department.
Survivors include nephews, Rigby Jenerette of Mullins, Giles Jenerette of Myrtle Beach, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lula F. Rigby, Alleen Rigby and Mary Jenerette; and three brothers, Ashley, Cameron and Horton Rigby.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Manning Cemetery.
Lawrence M. Stafford
Lawrence M. Stafford, 81, widower of Marguerite Hard Stafford, died Monday, February 10, 2003, at his home in Mt. Plymouth, Fla.
Born Sept. 3, 1921, in Sumter, he was the son of the late Arthur Franklin and Elizabeth Hodge Stafford. He was a retired quality control inspector for Sunbeam, a WWII U.S. Army veteran, a member of the VFW and DAV and was of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Margo Stafford Justice of Mt. Plymouth, Fla.; a granddaughter, Marceia Egler of Orlando, Fla.; a stepbrother, William “Billy” Robertson of Santee; two stepsisters, Ailene McIntosh and Addie Robertson of Bishopville; special friends, Jeff Durichek, Janet Hoover, John Loomis, Susan Morelli and Darlene Herrera; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 4 p.m. Thursday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning with the Rev. Mendel Baker officiating.
Burial followed in Wilson Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Joletha C. Wilson
Joletha Canty Wilson, 62, widow of Willie James Wilson, died Monday, February 10, 2003, at 214 Alfred Henry Drive, Manning Gardens Apt. 5-C.
Born Aug. 7, 1940, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie Canty and Pattie York Canty. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1958 graduate of Manning Training School. She was employed at Baxter Laboratories and Warsaw Manufacturing Co. of Kingstree. She joined Union Cypress AME Church, Jordan, at an early age, serving wherever she was needed.
Survivors include two sons, James (Paulethia) Wilson of Decatur, Ga., and Johnny Keith (Barbara) Wilson of Manning; three daughters, Patricia (Minister Wilbert) Holliday, Evangelist Rosa Mae (John) Fulton of Manning, and Tiny (Herbert) Baxter of Dalzell; three sisters, Clara David of Manning, Margaret Scott and Lillian Canty of South Norwalk, Conn.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James Canty.
Services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Union Cypress AME Church in Jordan with the Rev. Melissa Green, pastor, officiating, assisted by District Elder John D. Belton, Bishop James Wilson and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle.
Burial followed in the church cemetery.
Ella S. Blanding
Ella Samuel Blanding, 100, widow of Joseph Blanding Sr., died February 17, 2003, at Manor Care Nursing Home, Baltimore.
Born March 11, 1902, in Manning, she was the daughter of the late January and Lula Samuel. She was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Mark AME Church, where she served as president of the stewardess board, member of the missionary society, choir and Sunday school prior to moving to Baltimore because of illness.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Blanding Jr. (Alice) of Alcolu; two daughters, Rachel Harvin (Rev. John Harvin) of Baltimore and Ethel Mae Miles of Alcolu; a brother, January Samuel of Bamberg; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Elijah; and one daughter, Ruth.
Services were held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at St. Mark Church, Alcolu, with the Revs. John Harvin, E. Blackstone, J.E. Harvin, Leroy Green and evangelist Dorothy Miller officiating.
Burial followed in St. Mark Church cemetery.
Willie Bradshaw
Willie Bradshaw, 73, died February 18, 2003, at his residence.
Born Aug. 26, 1929, in the Foreston community, he was the son of Julius and Cora Jackson Bradshaw. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County and he was employed with the Logging Industry in Bonneau, S.C., for a number of years.
Survivors include a daughter, Pam Keels of Foreston; and a sister, Mary Lee Bradshaw of Foreston.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Julius, Leroy and Charlie Bradshaw.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Fleming and DeLaine Chapel, Manning, with the Revs. Curtis Dingle, Fred Snider and Evangelist Ernestine Fleming officiating.
Burial followed in Junky Yard Cemetery, Foreston.
Velma W. Young
Velma Lucille Williams Young, 80, wife of Robert Andrew Young, died Monday, February 18, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 16, 1920, in Arthur, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Harry C. and Edna Chapman Williams. She was a member of Santee Baptist Church.
Survivors besides her husband of Manning include two sons, Philip Young and his wife, Paulette, of Manning and Steven Young and wife, CueLing, of Pendleton, Ind.; a brother, Gordon Lee Williams of Madison, Ala.; a sister, Altha Gorden of Pendleton, Ind.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Dickie J. Young.
Services were 7 p.m. Thursday at Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth officiating.
Burial followed in Memorial Park in Anderson, Ind.
Memorials may be made to the Ladies Auxiliary of Santee Baptist Church or to the Ladies Auxiliary of Wyboo Fire Station.
Mary A. Smith
Mary Alsbrook Smith, wife of Lonnie Mondell Smith, died Wednesday, February 20, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Clarendon County, she was the daughter of the late McKeever Desausure Alsbrook and Elizabeth Marie Stukes Alsbrook. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Charleston. She retired after 15 years of service as mail clerk supervisor with the Army Corps of Engineers.
Survivors besides her husband of Sumter include two sisters, Marie Alsbrook of Columbia and Lila A. Bellinger of Sumter; and a brother, James Milton Alsbrook of Sumter.
Services were 11 a.m. Friday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. James Chandler officiating.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Charleston.
George R. Tisdale
Kingstree - George Randolph “Randy” Tisdale, 57, died Saturday, February 22, 2003, at his residence after an illness.
Born in Williamsburg County, he was the son of Edna Burrows Tisdale and the late George Edward Tisdale. He was retired from Colonial Rubber Company and was a member of the Black River Horseman Association and Millwood Methodist Church.
Survivors in addition to his mother of Kingstree include two daughters, Sherri (Bryan) Morris of Manning and Miranda Tisdale of Charleston; a son, Ozzie Tisdale of Manning; a sister, Gloria T. Morris of Florence; a brother, E.R. Tisdale; two grandsons, Clay and Henry Morris of Manning; and two very special friends, Marsha and Katie Crews of Kingstree.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday in Tisdale Cemetery, with Williamsburg Funeral Home directing.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Willie E. Hilton
Willie Everette “Billy” Hilton, 72, died Thursday, February 20, 2003.
Born Feb. 8, 1931, in Davis Station, he was the son of the late Henry Hammond and Susan Horton Hilton. He was a U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corp veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was retired from the ASCS office of the federal government. He was past president and lifetime member of the S.C. Quarter Horse Association, served on Summerton City Council for ten years, and was a member of Lake Marion Baptist Church.
Survivors include his closest friends, Tony, Lola, Flash and numerous relatives and a host of friends.
Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning.

A. Oliver Bryant Sr.
Allen Oliver Bryant Sr., 76, husband of Ruby Barwick Bryant, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in Summerton.
Born Oct. 26, 1926, in Manning, he was the son of the late J.E. and Edith Ridgeway Bryant. He was a retired equipment operator for Richland County Public Works, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors besides his wife include five daughters, Elaine Strassburg Hodge of Little River, Glenda B. Guillotte and June Strickland of Sumter, and Donna Nesbitt and Leila Bryant of Columbia; three sons, Norris Bryant and Wayne Bryant of Manning, and Daniel Bryant of Columbia; five sisters, Rosalie Burke and Mary Edith Hill of Sumter, Ruby DuBose of Pinewood, Betty Wallace of Georgetown and Raye Wallace of Alcolu; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Allen Oliver Bryant Jr.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning with the Rev. Mark Evans and Morris Smith officiating.
Burial followed in June Burn Cemetery.
Pallbearers were the grandsons and nephews.
