Mary Thompson
TIMMONSVILLE — Mary Alice B. Thompson, 70, died December 6, 2004, in a Florence hospital. She was born in Dillon County, a daughter of the late Arthur Benjamin and Alpha Omega Lane Brown. Mrs. Thompson was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. She was a retired certified nursing assistant.
Surviving are a son, William T. “Bill” (Tessie) Brown, Florence; four daughters, Nancy Jo “Steve” Frith, Troutman, NC, Peggy Lynn (Wayne) Parker, Gaffney, Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Gardner, Columbia, Stephanie Ann (Don) Stone, Florence; four brothers, John Odell (Sandy) Brown, Cape Cod, MA, William Kelly (Jean) Brown, W. Columbia, Harry Paul (Pat) Brown, Blythewood, Terry Mitchell (Edna) Brown, Gilbert; two sisters-in-law, Fannie Mae Brown and Dula Mae Brown, both of W. Columbia; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by three brothers, Arthur, Dennis, Nathan Brown and one sister, Doris Helen B. Wiggins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at 2 p.m. in the Mausoleum Chapel of Florence Memorial Gardens. Entombment will follow.
The family will receive friends at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home, today, December 7 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Grady West Sr.
LORIS — Services for Grady James West Sr., 83, are 1 p.m. Wednesday at Loris UMC. Hardwick Funeral Home is in charge. Born in Myrtle Beach, he died Dec. 4, 2004, landed on D-Day, June 6, 1944, as a member of the 5th Ranger Battalion and had been a teacher, principal, coach, and held a S.C Real Estate Brokers License. Surviving: wife, Lalla Stevens West; children, Beverly, Jim West, Ellen Sanders; grandchildren.
May Welles
WALTERBORO — Services for May Prine Welles, 78, widow of George Welles, 3 pm Wednesday (visitation 6-8 tonight) at Brice W. Herndon & Sons Funeral Home. Born in Miami to Blanchard Prine and Faye DeWitt Prine Hamasse, she died Dec. 6, 2004. Surviving: daughters, Joan Lee, Sandy Varn; stepchildren, Cheryl Wilson, Donald Welles; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Varnadoe.
John Hellams Jr.
CLINTON — Services for John P. “Bill” Hellams Jr., 71, are 3 p.m. (visitation 2-3 p.m.) Wednesday at Gray Funeral Home, entombment in Pinelawn Memory Gardens. Born in Gray Court to John Sr. and Annie Snipes Hellams, he died Dec. 5, 2004. He formerly owned Pinebrook Mobile Home Park in Spartanburg, was a Mason and Shriner. Surviving: wife, Gwin Scott Hellams; sister, Mary Ann Starling.
LaQuanda Wilson
HOPKINS — Funeral service for LaQuanda Nicole Wilson of 1520 Clarkson Road will be held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 8, 2004, at St. John Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Garden. Visitation will be held Tuesday, December 7, 2004, 3-9 P.M. at the funeral home.

Ms. Wilson died Thursday, December 2, 2004. Born in Columbia, she was the daughter of James Barber and Melissa Wilson Murdock. She was a member of St. John Baptist Church, a graduate of Lower Richland High School and was employed with American Italian Pasta Company.
She is survived by her parents; daughters, Little Miss Jasmine Wilson Jones, Little Miss Darrian D. Wilson; brothers, James Shelton Barber, Sharod Albert Hampton; sisters, LaShonda M. Wilson; maternal grandparents, Florence (Joseph Odell) Sumter; paternal grandmother, Eliza Howell.
Harry Darby Sr.
COLUMBIA — Harry Bates Darby, Sr., 81, died December 5, 2004. A native of Richland County, he was born on September 25, 1923, the son of the late Harry Northrop and Emily Bates Darby. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Mr. Darby attended Clemson University, was a Navy veteran of WWII and owned and operated Columbia Land Company.
He is survived by his wife, Susan D. Darby of Columbia; daughters, Susan Sexton of Columbia, Beth Leath of Pawleys Island, Fran Clary of Saluda, Anne Tharp of Blue Springs, MO, Teddy Allen of Columbia; sons, Lt. Col. Harry Bates (Angela) Darby Jr. (Ret.) and James Adams Haynes (Dawn) Darby, both of Columbia; sister, Lou (Reggie) deLiessline of Mt. Pleasant; brother, Elliott Darby of Columbia; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Devine Street on Friday, December 10, 2004, at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, Child Life Department, 7 Richland Medical Park Drive, Ste. 203, Columbia, SC 29203 or St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Devine St., Columbia, SC.

Born in Greenville to Columbus and Lillie C. Starks, she died Dec. 1, 2004. Surviving: children, Billy Bennett, Antillious Thompson, Jennifer Jones, Samuel Alexander; sister, Sarah Looper; seven grandchildren.
Nell Brownlee
GREENWOOD — A graveside service for Nell Murphy Brownlee, widow of William Brownlee Sr., was held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Edgewood Cemetery. Harley Funeral Home was in charge. Born in Enoree to John and Pat Thornton Murphy, she died December 3, 2004. She was a member of Jordan Memorial Baptist Church. Surviving: son, Col. William Brownlee; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
June Akin
COLUMBIA — June Hudson Akin, age 83, a long term resident of Crossett, AR, died Friday, December 3, 2004, in Providence Hospital in Columbia, SC. Mrs. Akin was born on January 27, 1921, in Strong, AR, a cherished daughter of Thomas Walker and Rosalie Murphy Bailey Hudson. She was blessed with wonderful memories from her childhood in Strong where she found joy in her vibrant family, travel, basketball, and her many friends. She graduated from Strong High School as the Salutatorian. She studied Home Economics, Chemistry, and Math at Louisiana Tech University and was an active member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. After graduating college in 1943 and living briefly in Cuba, she accepted employment with The Crossett Company in the Research Laboratory. In 1946, she married William Dewitt Akin of Drew County, AR. She chose motherhood as her primary role in life after the birth of her first child and became a Substitute Teacher in the Crossett Public School System. Mrs. Akin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett and the Lydia Sunday School Class. A devoted mother, Mrs. Akin assisted in various school and civic activities with her children. Her youthful spirit and the warmth of her laughter will resonate and enrich our lives forever. Her gracious character was exemplary.
Mrs. Akin was preceded in death by her husband in 1998. Her survivors include: Her two sons and their families, William Dewitt Akin Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of St. Augustine, FL, and their children, Mrs. Carter Bostwick (Allison) of Jacksonville, FL, and William Dustin Akin of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; Thomas Walker Hudson Akin and his wife, Karen, and their children, Erin Elizabeth and Thomas Walker Hudson Akin, Jr., all of Columbia, SC; her daughter and her family, Susan Rose Akin Pye and her husband, Darrell, Susan’s children, Carrie Burt Taylor, Mrs. Kevin Floyd (Rebekah), Mary Kathryn Burt and Laura Leigh Burt, all of Macon, GA; five great-grandchildren, Amanda, Lauren and Grace Bostwick of Jacksonville, FL, Madison Akin of Florence, South Carolina, and Emily Burt of Macon, GA.
Her sister, Marjorie Hudson Fitzhugh, and her two half sisters, Elizabeth Bailey Mollerberg and Rosalie Bailey preceded Mrs. Akin in death.
The family will receive visitors on Thursday, December 9, from 6-8 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 10, 2004, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Crossett with the Reverend Stuart Toms and Reverend Larry White officiating. Interment will follow in the Strong Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett, AR.

SUMTER — A graveside service for Clara C. Allen, 96, member of Order of Eastern Star, widow of Vono Allen, will be held at noon Wednesday in Woodlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Greenville.
