James F. Spellman
James F. Spellman, 88, of Eastchester, N.Y., formerly of Pawcatuck, died on Oct. 10, 2003. He was president of the class of '31, Stonington, H.S. Survivors include his wife Eva, sons Rev. Robert and James Jr.; daughters Mary and Ann.
He was predeceased by his parents, James and Margaret Spellman; his first wife, Eileen Dolan Spellman; his brother, Robert; and sister, Mary.
Burial took place on Oct. 16 at St Michael Cemetery.
Mary R. (Montalto) Sacco
Mary R. (Montalto) Sacco, 93, of Bradford Road, Bradford, died on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 2, 2003, at the Westerly Health Center. She was the beloved wife of the late Andrew Sacco who passed away on Sept. 9, 2002. They had been married for 75 years.
She leaves her son, Andrew M. Sacco, husband of Alice, of Westerly; three daughters, Catherine S. Algiere, wife of William, Norma P. Ramsey, and Dolores E. Teague, wife of Pete, all of Bradford; a brother, Frank Montalto of Bradford; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
She was also predeceased by two sisters, Isabella Ugone and Rose Montalto; and a son-in-law Clyde Ramsey.
Mrs. Sacco was born in Bradford on April 2, 1910, daughter of the late Alphonse and Serafina (Barbarelli) Montalto. She had been employed before her retirement at age 77, at McCormick's Department Store for 30 years as manager of the boys' department. She was also a communicant at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Bradford. She was a devoted, loving wife, mom and grandmother who loved everyone. She was the best of the best.
The funeral will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, 2003, from Rushlow-Iacoi Funeral Home, 64 Friendship St., Westerly, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 7 Church St., Bradford. There will be no procession from the funeral home. Burial will take place at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly. Calling hours at the funeral home are today from 4 to 7 p.m.

Chester A. Gardiner Sr.
Chester A. Gardiner Sr., 92, of Main Street, Hope Valley, died Tuesday Dec. 2, 2003, at the Laurel Health Care Center in Coventry. He was the beloved husband of the late Hazel E. (Sherman) Gardiner.
Born in Exeter on Feb. 15, 1911, he was the son of the late Horace B. and Hattie E. (Sherman) Gardiner.
Mr. Gardiner was employed as the groundskeeper for the Meadow Brook Golf Course in Richmond for many years before his retirement.
Chester will be sadly missed by his three children, Chester A. Gardiner Jr. of Hope Valley, and Bette E. Crossen Leary and Norman G. Gardiner, both of Exeter. He also leaves a brother, Lowell Gardiner of North Kingstown; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the S.R. Avery Funeral Home, Main Street, Hope Valley. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Fairview Avenue, Hope Valley.
Richard T. Bradshaw
Funeral services for Richard T. Bradshaw of 2 Minor St., Pawcatuck will be Friday, Dec. 5, 2003 at 11 a.m. in the Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm St., Westerly. Calling hours are today from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, with a Masonic service at the funeral home at 7 p.m. Burial will be in River Bend Cemetery, Beach Street, Westerly.

Susan Andrew Sweet
A memorial service for Susan Andrew Sweet of North Stonington will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the North Stonington Congregational Church, 89 Main St., North Stonington. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly.

DOROTHY K. DUFF
Dorothy K. Duff, 76, of 10 Williams Ave., Westerly, wife of James Duff, died Sunday Dec. 14, 2003, at the Westerly Nursing Home.
Born in New York, N.Y., on Dec. 25, 1926, she was the daughter of the late William and Bernice Josephine Kane.
Raised in Bronxville, N.Y., she graduated from Roosevelt High School, Yonkers, N.Y. Following high school, she received an associate degree from Green Mountain Junior College, and a bachelor's degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. Mrs. Duff continued her education, earning her master's in education from Cornell in 1950. While at Cornell, she was a member of the Board of Managers at Willard Strait Hall, the Chi Chapter of Delta Gamma, and the Pi Lambda Theta graduate education honorary society. Following her education, she was enrolled in the executive training program of R.H. Macy's of New York, noted as the first personnel-related graduate selected for the program. She was married in Sept. 1950 in Bronxville.
While raising a family, Mrs. Duff relocated to Meriden, Conn., then to St. Louis, Mo., and then back to Cheshire, Conn., where she and her family lived for nearly 25 years. She worked as a counselor at Quinnipiac University in admissions academics in Hamden, Conn., for 20 years. While employed at Quinnipiac, she was a member of the American Association of Counseling and Development, Connecticut State Board of Junior Women's Clubs, American College Personnel Association, and the Eastern College Placement Officers. During the 1980s, Mrs. Duff served on Senator Thomas Dodd's U.S. Academies Selection Committee, at that time she was the only woman and registered Republican. In 1991, Mrs. Duff retired with her husband to Weekapaug. She was a former member of the International Association of Personnel Women, the American Association of University Women, and an active member and former president of the Westerly College Club.
In addition to her husband she is survived by two sons, Steven J. Duff of Middletown, Conn., and Brian W. Duff of Evergreen, Colo.; a daughter, Virginia D. Ells of Cheshire; seven grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, in the Dunn's Corners Community Church, Presbyterian. There are no calling hours. The Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, is in charge of arrangements.

CALEB JOSEPH BROWN
Caleb Joseph Brown, three months, infant son of Amanda L. Brown, of Diamond Hill Road, Ashaway, died June 21, 2003, at The Westerly Hospital.
He was born in Westerly on March 18, 2003.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his maternal grandfather, Leslie L. Brown of Westerly; his maternal grandmother, Linda M. Brown of Ashaway; and his uncle and godfather, Robert J. Brown of Ashaway.
Calling hours are omitted. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Hopkinton Cemetery, Chase Hill Road, Ashaway. Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Westerly, is handling arrangements.

A memorial service for Nancy E. Houston will be held Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 4 p.m., at the Weekapaug Chapel, Noyes Neck Road, Weekapaug.
GRACE DEFANTI
Grace (Donohue) DeFanti of 67 William St., Pawcatuck, died at The Westerly Hospital, Friday, June 27, 2003, at the age of 75. She was the beloved wife for 50 years of John A. DeFanti.
She most recently had been employed as a lunchroom aide at West Broad Street School in Pawcatuck where she worked for many years.
A woman of great faith, she was a lifetime communicant of St. Michael Church in Pawcatuck where she was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. She was a graduate of St. Michael School and of Stonington High School Class of 1945.
She was passionate about her flowers in and around her home and enjoyed gardening as well. She was a member of the Tuesday afternoon card club where she played cards with her numerous friends. She devoted her life to her family. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother and was always present for her grandchildren's sporting events and extracurricular activities.
She was also active years ago supporting the Democratic Party. She was a gracious hostess, always having a pot of coffee brewing for anyone who happened by.
In addition to her husband, she leaves two sons, Dr. Thomas DeFanti of Kennebunk, Maine, and Jay DeFanti of Pawcatuck; three daughters Helen Bell of Westerly, Joan Culotta and Karen McNeil both of Pawcatuck; one sister, Marie Morrison also of Pawcatuck 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews
She was predeceased by two brothers, former Pawcatuck Fire Chief John "Jack" Donohue and Richard Donohue.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Michael Church, Liberty Street, Pawcatuck, Wednesday, at 10 a.m. There will be no procession from the funeral home. visiting hours will be held in Gaffney-Dolan Funeral Home, 59 Spruce St., Tuesday, from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. Michael Cemetery.
