Margaret Long Arnold
1912 ~ 2004
Concord, NH - Margaret Long Arnold, 92, former president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and a former executive at AARP, died December 1, 2004 at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Concord. Her husband of 37 years, Mr. Dexter O. Arnold, died in 1976.
Born in 1912 in Lusk, Wyoming, where her father, the late Reverend S. Burman Long, had traveled to establish a Congregational Church along with her mother the late Margaret Mae (Hoch) Long. Mrs. Arnold held a variety of volunteer and public service positions throughout her life. After graduating from Syracuse University in 1934, she established the Department of Speech and Dramatics in the Syracuse, NY school system and was a consultant to the Columbia Broadcasting System. In 1939 she married Dexter O. Arnold and moved to Concord, New Hampshire, where Mr. Arnold was the Superintendent of Schools in the 1960's. While Mr. Arnold was serving as a Lt. Commander in the U. S. Navy, she became active in the Women's Club of Concord, eventually serving as its president.
As a young clubwoman in 1956, she was responsible for the first New Hampshire Governor's Conference on Aging, which earned her a medal from the University of New Hampshire as the state's most distinguished citizen. She became the president of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1962 and was profiled in the Saturday Evening Post in 1963. In that interview she was quoted as saying, "I decided a woman had to expand the walls of her house to include the community. You have to pay the rent for being a free woman in a democracy, and volunteer work is the way you do it."
Mrs. Arnold moved to Washington, D.C. in 1975 and served as the head of Women's Activities Division of the AARP. She returned to Concord in 1994, following her retirement. She is survived by four nephews and two nieces.
Funeral services will be held at grave side on Friday December 10th at 11 a.m. at the Arnold Mills Cemetery, Nate Whipple Highway, Rt. 120, Cumberland, RI. Arrangements are under the direction of the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Rd. Rt. 122, Cumberland, RI. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Syracuse University, Office of Donor Relations, 820 Comstock Avenue, Syracuse NY 13244, in memory of Margaret Long Arnold, Class of 34.
Henry M. Messier
1930-2005
Central Falls - Henry M. Messier, Sergeant First Class, U.S. Army Ret., 74, of Lewis St. died Friday at home. He was the husband of the late Mildred Singer.
Born in Central Falls, he was a son of the late Henry and Florence (Grenier) Messier. Other than his military service he was a life long Central Falls resident.
His service in the U. S. Army spanned thirty years, twenty of which were on active duty including the Korean Conflict, where he saw action and was an escapee P.O.W. After active duty he entered the Army Reserve serving another ten years until his retirement.
In civilian life he was a chef at the Walpole State Prison for three years and had also been employed in food service management at LaSalette, Attleboro and Ann & Hope Cumberland for a number of years.
He was a member of the Eugene T. Lefebvre Post, V.F.W., Central Falls and a member and past Post Commander of the former American Legion Post 75, Central Falls. He was a devoted Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan.
He leaves three sons, Henry J. Messier of Taunton, Robert P. Messier of Attleboro and Scott G. Messier, of Washington, DC. Two daughters, Deborah A. St. Pierre of Central Falls and Margaret L. Smith of Cumberland. Three brothers, Maurice Messier of Seekonk, George Messier of Pawtucket and Conrad Messier of Rehoboth. One sister, Elaine Barboza of Seekonk. He also leaves nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was also the father of the late David B. Messier.
A funeral with military honors will be held Tuesday with funeral services at 10 a.m. in the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Rd. Rt. 122, Cumberland. Burial will be in R. I. Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Calling hours Monday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
James E. Bridges Sr.
1937-2005
Cumberland - James E. Bridges Sr., 67, of England St. died Sunday in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Providence. He was the husband of Claire (Cote) Bridges.
Born in Gainesville, AK he was the son of Iva Mae Killingsworth, of Cumberland. He resided in Cumberland for the past thirty nine years.
He was the owner of the former J B Real Estate Co. for forty five years and the former J B Trucking Co., for thirty years both of Cumberland retiring in 1990.
He was a Korean War veteran serving in the U. S. Navy.
He was a former member of the St. Thomas Council, Knight of Columbus, Cumberland. He was the former State Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a former member of the Amvets and the Garfield V.F.W., Central Falls for many years.
Besides his wife and mother he leaves two sons, James E. Bridges Jr. of Cumberland and Russell R. Bridges of Lincoln. A daughter, Tammy A. Bridges of Cumberland. Three brothers, William Killingsworth of Attleboro, Lee Killingsworth of Foster and Donald Killingsworth of Cumberland. Two sisters, Jeannette Robertson of Lincoln and Nancy Souza of Cumberland. Seven grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held Wednesday with military honors at 9 a.m. from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Rd. Rt. 122, Cumberland. Noella A.Parish
1935-2005
LINCOLN - Noella A. Parish, 69, of Great Road, Lincoln, died Sunday in the Home and Hospice Care of RI, Inpatient Unit, Providence. She was the wife of the late Charles A. Parish.
Born in Hebronville, MA, she was the daughter of the late Delmont and Amelia (Plante) Passano. She resided in Lincoln since 1956, previously residing in Cumberland.
She was a factory worker for the Crest Manufacturing Company of Lincoln for 28 years, retiring in 2002. She leaves Two brothers, Joseph Passano, and Roger Passano, both of Cumberland. One sister, Mary Morrow of Palm Desert, California, and Several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 9 AM in the St. James Church, Manville, RI. Burial will follow in the Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
Beatrice Podgurski (Gueval)
1919-2005
CUMBERLAND - Beatrice Podgurski (Gueval), 85, of St. Joseph Street, Woonsocket, formerly of One Mendon Road, and Broad Street, Cumberland died Tuesday in the Mt. St. Francis Health Center, Woonsocket. She was the wife of the late Charles J. Podgurski.
Born in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary A. (Dacoteau) Gueval. She resided in Cumberland for most of her life.
Mrs. Podgurski was employed as an associate with Ann & Hope, for 25 years, retiring in 1997. She was also employed by the Backstone Catering Company for 2 years.
She was a communicant of the St. Patrick Church, Broad Street, Cumberland. A member of the St. Patrick Seniors, and the Cumberland Tenants Association.
She leaves two sons, Gerald J. Podgurski of Cumberland, and Charles V. Podgurski of New Braunfels, TX. One daughter, Patricia A. Young of Cumberland. One sister,
Jean Letourneau of Cumberland. Seven Grandchildren, and Several Nieces and Nephews. Sister of the late Vincent Gueval and Mary Gueval.

Alfred L. Scullin
1918-2005
Cumberland - Alfred L. Scullin, 86, of High St., died Wednesday in the Madonna Manor Nursing Home, North Attleboro. He was the husband of Anna (McCourt) Scullin.
Born in Pawtucket he was a son of the late Thomas F. and Annabelle (Corrigan) Scullin. He resided in Cumberland for the past sixty years.
He was employed by the U. S. Postal Service which spanned a total of twenty five years the last few as Post Master of the former Ashton, RI Branch retiring in 1972.
He was a WW II, U. S. Army veteran and had also previously served in the U. S. Coast Guard.
He was a communicant of St. Patrick Church, Cumberland and was a C.Y.O. advisor for many years. He was a member of the St. Thomas Council Knights of Columbus, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and the American Legion Post 14 all of Cumberland. He was also a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Besides his wife he leaves three sons, Alfred L. Scullin, Jr. of Chino Hills, CA, John F. Scullin, North Smithfield and Stephen A. Scullin of Cumberland. Two daughters, Mary E. Redihan and Anne M. Crocker both of Cumberland. Eleven grandchildren, one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Francis, James, Joseph, John and Edward Scullin.

CUMBERLAND - Manuel DaSilva, 75, of Highland Avenue, previously of Ocala, Forida. He was the husband of Carolina (Almeida) DaSilva.
Born in Lamegal, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose Joaquim and Maria deJesus (Tomasia) DaSilva. He resided in Ocala, Florida for 13 years, previously residing in Stratford, Connecticut for many years, recently moving to Cumberland.
He was a custodian for the Peoples Bank in Bridgeport, CT for 13 years, retiring in 1985.
Besides his beloved wife he leaves one son, Hilario DaSilva. One sister Maria Francisco of Pawtucket. Two Grandchildren. Two nephews.

William R. Franklin "Rhody"

CUMBERLAND - William R. Franklin, 79, of Abbott Run Valley Road, died Saturday in the Morgan Manor Health Center, Johnston.
Born in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Waldo and Helen (Schofield) Franklin. He was a life long Cumberland resident.
Mr. Franklin was a self employed farmer for most of his life.
Mr. Franklin was a US Army Veteran, serving during the Korean War stationed in France.
He was a member of the former Arnolds Mills Grange, and an avid Farmer and Gardener.
He leaves one brother, Arnold Franklin of Cumberland. Two nephews, and two nieces.

Rene C. Bessette, Sr.
1917-2005
Cumberland - Rene C. Bessette, Sr., 87, formerly of Hines Rd. died Monday in the R. I. Veteran's Home, Bristol. He was the husband of the late Evelyn B. (Prince) Bessette.
Born in Central Falls he was a son of the late Edeas and Alexina (Benoit) Bessette. He resided in Cumberland for the past fifty nine years.
He was a General Superintendent, employed by the J.A. Sullivan Construction Co., Boston until his retirement. He was previously employed by the Gilbane Construction Co and the Wes-Julia Construction Co. for a number of years.
He was a WW II, U. S. Army veteran serving in the Rhineland Campaign and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.
He leaves three sons, Rene C. Bessette Jr. of Indialantic, FL, Edward Bessette of Pawtucket and William Bessette of Corpus Christi, TX. Seven daughter, Barbara Hemond and Carol Forte both of Cumberland, Diane Lavallee and Elizabeth Sailsbury both of Lincoln, Linda D'Abate of Pawtuxet, Margaret Bessette of Merrick, LI, NY and Maryanne Reis of Warwick. Eighteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren. He was also the brother of the late Rena R. Field and Leo Bessete.
