PEDRO GONCALVES - Pawtucket
PEDRO GONCALVES, 84, of High Street, a retired maintenance worker, died yesterday at home.
He was the husband of Laura (Sequeira) Goncalves. Born in Brava, Cape Verde, a son of the late Manuel and Isabelle (Gomes) Goncalves, he came to this country 41 years ago, settling in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had lived in Pawtucket for 19 years.
Mr. Goncalves was a maintenance worker for St. Vincent's Hall Inc., Brooklyn, for 22 years, retiring in 1982. He was a communicant of St. Edward Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Antonio Goncalves, a daughter, Eugenia Goncalves Pires, two brothers, Domingos and Antonio Goncalves, and two sisters, Maria Goncalves Coelho and Ana Goncalves, all of Pawtucket; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Lidia Silva.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. from Merrick R. Williams Funeral Home, 530 Smithfield Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 in St. Edward Church, Weeden Street. Burial will be in Swan Point cemetery, Providence.

ALIONNA M. SHERROD-MARTINEZ - Providence
ALIONNA M. SHERROD-MARTINEZ, of Yale Avenue, 11-day-old infant daughter of Albert Martinez Jr. and Keyona Sherrod, died Friday at Women & Infants Hospital.
Besides her parents, she leaves a sister, Dajah Sherrod, her maternal grandparents, Calvin Nichols and Dianne Sherrod, her paternal grandparents, Alberto Martinez and Jacqueline Nieves, and her maternal step-grandmother, Charlene Dickens, all of Providence.
The funeral and burial will be private.

SAMUEL M. CATE - Providence
SAMUEL M. CATE, 74, of Jenckes Street, a retired self-employed architect and a professor at the Rhode Island School of Design, died Friday at home.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Benjamin H. and Eunice (Moore) Cate, he had lived in Providence most of his life, where he graduated from Hope High School. He earned degrees in engineering and architecture from Yale University.
He served in the Navy for a year just after the end of World War II and was recalled to active duty in the Korean War as an officer overseeing work at shipyards and munitions plants in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
He returned to Providence and joined the Harkness & Geddes architectural firm for a few years before opening his own office in 1962, specializing in residential architecture. At the same time, he joined the faculty of the Rhode Island School of Design as an assistant professor.
He retired in 1999, although he continued to accept occasional commissions for additions or new construction.
He was active in the community, serving on the board of VNA of Rhode Island for 29 years, starting in 1976, with 17 years as chairman of the board, and 6 years on the board of the Friends of the Haffenreffer Museum. He was a member of the board of the Providence Art Club.
He leaves a nephew, Frederick Gray of East Providence, and two nieces, Constance Smith of Tiverton and Patricia Brannon of Los Angeles. He was the brother of the late Benjamin Cate.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. in First Unitarian Church, Benefit and Benevolent Streets.

JOHN J. McINERNEY JR. - Providence
JOHN J. McINERNEY JR., 68, of Stamford Avenue, a rigger, and a business owner, died Saturday at home.
He was the husband of Muriel S. (Smith) McInerney. Born in Providence, a son of the late John J. Sr. and Delia (Nassi) McInerney, he had lived in Providence most of his life, and in Cape Coral, Fla., from 1981 to 1986.
Mr. McInerney was a rigger for 20 years, and worked with the former Zovota Brothers Rigging Co., of Providence. An entrepreneur, he had formerly owned Big John's Milk Store and Mac's Spa on Elmwood Avenue. While in Florida, he was a restaurateur and real-estate investor.
He was a member of Teamsters Local 251. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of the Nelson-Mac VFW Post, Cranston, and the Elks Lodge, the Irish-American Club and the Italian-American Club, all in Cape Coral.
Besides his wife, he leaves five sons, Louis A. Ferguson of Providence, David A. Ferguson of Pawtucket, Robert W. McInerney and Ronald W. McInerney, both of Cranston, and John J. McInerney III of Warwick; two sisters, Patricia A. Guadagni of Warwick and Shirley M. Lyons of Lincoln; and 17 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Doris C. Barber.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 8.45 a.m. from Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Matthew Church, Elmwood Avenue, Cranston. Burial will be in St. Ann cemetery, Cranston.

FRANK GROSSI - Scituate
FRANK GROSSI, 82, formerly of Danielson Pike, a former woodworker and finish carpenter, died Thursday at Eleanor Slater General Hospital, Cranston.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Francesco and Catherine (DeConti) Grossi, he had lived in Cranston for 20 years, previously living in Scituate and Providence. He was the owner of the former H.G. Woodworking Co. for many years before retiring in 1982. He was a woodworker and finish carpenter for over 40 years.
He was active in the Boy Scouts as a troop leader in the 1960s.
He leaves two sons, Francesco Grossi of Warwick and Robert L. Grossi of Providence; three daughters, Linda M. Cogean of Providence, Debra J. Grossi of North Providence and Lisa A. Toohey of North Scituate; two sisters, Lena DiToro and Lotti Riccittelli, both of Cranston; 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; and his former wife, Helen M. (Norman) Grossi of North Providence. He was the brother of the late Albert, Vincent, Luigi, Joseph and Thomas Grossi.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Holy Cross Church, 645 Hartford Ave., Providence.

CAROLELL B. KEANEY - Warwick
CAROLELL B. KEANEY, 90, formerly of Congress Street, a former jewelry company and cleansers employee, died yesterday at Haborside Healthcare Pawtuxet Village.
She was the wife of the late John L. Keaney. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Arthur C. and Grace V. (Kent) Gates, she had been a Warwick resident since 1967.
Mrs. Keaney had formerly been employed at Berkanders Jewelry and Swiss Cleansers, both in Providence.
She was a member of Gold Star Wives of America.
She leaves her twin children, John L. Keaney and Sondra E. Andrews, both of Warwick, and three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Alton K. Gates.
A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Chapel, 2435 Warwick Ave. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.

KATHERINE M. KIRBY - Warwick
KATHERINE M. KIRBY, 81, of Strawberry Field Road, a retired inspector, died yesterday at the home of her daughter Maryellen J. Vittum of Warwick.
She was the wife of the late Daniel F. Kirby Sr. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late John J. and Agnes C. (O'Donnell) McGee, she had been a Warwick resident for 52 years.
Mrs. Kirby was an inspector for the EGG Sealol Co. for 20 years before retiring in 1986. She was a charter member of the Good Sams camping organization.
Besides her daughter Maryellen, she leaves four sons, Daniel F. Kirby Sr. of Coventry, and Michael J., John T. and Patrick K. Kirby, all of Warwick; another daughter, Kathleen A. Gage of Warwick; and 15 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Agnes C. Gianfracesco.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from Frank P. Trainor & Sons Funeral Home, 992 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Clement Church, Long Street. Burial will be St. Joseph cemetery, West Greenwich.
