JOSEPHINE K. SEMINICK - Central Falls

JOSEPHINE K. SEMINICK, 81, of Crown Street, died Saturday in Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. She was the wife of the late Walter Seminick. Born in Central Falls, a daughter of the late Valenty and Sophie (Peret) Kubiski, she was a lifelong resident of Central Falls.

She leaves a daughter, Carole Emery of Attleboro; two sons, Walter and Thomas Seminick, both of Central Falls; three sisters, Germaine Ballou of San Diego, Calif., Philomena Harsland of Woonsocket and Antoinette Jacques of Branton, Fla.; a brother, Paul Kubiski of Barrington; and 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Anna Webber, Mary Archiolli, and Walter, John, Thomas and Joseph Kubiski.

The funeral and burial were private.

Ex-Judge Roger 'Roddy' Sullivan, 74; ex-council leader, sports Hall of Famer

FALL RIVER -- Judge Roger F. "Roddy" Sullivan, 74, formerly of Stanley Street and Herman Street, former presiding Second District Court judge, police commissioner and athletic Hall of Famer, died yesterday in Southcoast Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center, Somerset.

He was the husband of the late Mary C. (Lyons) Sullivan. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Boetius M. and Mary J. (Dwyer) Sullivan, he had lived on Stanley Street and Herman Street most of his life, moving to Somerset last year. He was also a summer resident of Portsmouth Park most of his life.

He had been presiding judge of the Second District Court until his retirement in 1993. He previously was a lawyer with the district attorney's Office in Fall River for several years and had been associated for over 20 years with the law firms of Horvitz & Horvitz, Bolger & Sullivan and then the law firm Sullivan.

Judge Sullivan served as police commissioner for the City of Fall River under former Mayor John F. Kane.

He was a city counselor and president of the City Council for 10 years.

He was a 1945 graduate of BMC Durfee High School and one of its greatest athletes, staring in basketball, football and baseball. He was a founding member of the BMC Durfee Athletic Hall of Fame and served as chairman of the selection committee. He was also a longtime member of the board, and president and president emeritus of the BMC Durfee High School Athletic Association.

Judge Sullivan was a member of the Massachusetts, Bristol County and Fall River Bar Associations and the Massachusetts Trial Judges Association. He attended Boston College and was a 1952 graduate of the Boston College Law School.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a parishioner of Holy Name Church.

Judge Sullivan was a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Fall River, the Over the Hill Gang, and a former member of the SERRA Club. He was a longtime member of the board and former president of the Fall River Municipal Employees Credit Union.

He leaves two sons, Roger F. "Roddy" Sullivan Jr. and Boetius W. "Boe" Sullivan, both of Fall River, and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Cornelius, Boetius, William and Alfred Sullivan.

The funeral will be held Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. from the Cherry Place Home of Waring-Sullivan, Ashton, Coughlin-Driscoll, 178 Winter St., with a funeral Mass at 10 in Holy Name Church, Hanover Street. Burial will be in North Burial Ground.

MARILYN LOUISE (WELLS) CORNELL - Newport

MARILYN LOUISE (WELLS) CORNELL, 60, of Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, formerly of Carriage House Nursing Home and Park Holm, a former waitress, died yesterday at the center.

She was the wife of the late Merle Cornell. Born in Malden, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Ward J. and Louise (Goodwin) Wells.

Mrs. Cornell was a waitress in the Newport County area, including at the former Spaghetti House and Stone Bridge Inn. She had also been a clerk at Ames department store.

She was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, and a former member of St. Lucy Church.

She enjoyed the beach.

She leaves four sons, Jeffrey Cornell of Newport, Merle and Timothy Cornell, both of Akron, Ohio, and Shawn Cornell of Meadville, Pa.; two daughters, Tammy Cornell of Meadville, Pa., and April Cornell of Newport; a brother, Ward F. Wells of Lisbon Falls, Maine; and eight grandchilren.

The funeral will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. from Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in St. Lucy Church, 909 West Main Rd., Middletown. Burial will be in St. Columba cemetery, Middletown.

RUTH HELEN SPENCER - Newport

RUTH HELEN SPENCER, 94, of St. Clare Home, 309 Spring St., formerly of 24 Mary St., a former costume shop owner, died Sunday at Heatherwood Nursing Home.

Born in Los Angeles on June 19, 1907, she was a daughter of the late Stanley Arthur and Helen (Addison) Spencer.

Miss Spencer was a graduate of Beaumont High School and Louisiana Normal in Natchitoches, La. She had lived most of her life in Beaumont, Texas, and Shreveport, La. In her later years, she lived in New Orleans, La., and Houston, and with her niece, Anne Shaw, in Newport.

She used her artistic talents for various small theater groups in Shreveport, where she was also co-owner of a costume shop.

She was an elder in St. Charles Avenue Christian Church, New Orleans, and a member of First Unitarian Church, Beaumont.

While living in Newport, she attended Forest Farm Day Care, Middletown, before becoming a resident at St. Clare Home.

She leaves a sister, Katherine Joiner of Houston and Elizabeth Gulley of Beaumont. She was the sister of the late Florence Spencer, Gertrude Spencer, David Spencer, Margaret Spencer Shaw and Frances Mildred Spencer.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway.

DONALD D. COUITT - Providence

DONALD D. COUITT, 30, of Lowell Avenue, died early Thursday in Rhode Island Hospital of gunshot wounds suffered in a drive-by shooting earlier that morning on Mawney Street in Providence.

Born in Providence, a son of Joseph E. and Mary A. (Kelvey) Williams, both of Providence, he was a lifelong resident of the city. Mr. Coitt had worked as a warehouseman for Pet Foods Experts, in Cumberland.

Besides his parents, he leaves a daughter, Prinsetta Johnson of Providence; five brothers, Joseph E. Williams Jr. and Randy, Fernando and Hector Williams, all of Providence, and Hector Carter of Johnston; four sisters, Sandra Cady of Cranston and Lori, Sowilda and Sheena Williams, all of Providence; and his maternal grandmother, Mary Lamphiere of Providence.

The funeral will be held on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the Prata Funeral Home, 1488 Westminster St. Burial will be in the North Burial Ground.

SHELDON L. "BUD" "BUDDY" GERBER - Providence

SHELDON L. "BUD" "BUDDY" GERBER, 80, of Boynton Beach, Fla., a former real-estate developer and Providence city official, died Sunday at home. He was the husband of Helen (Nelson) Gerber. Born in Providence, a son of the late George and Rose (Goldberg) Gerber, he had been a lifelong resident of the city until moving to Florida.

Mr. Gerber had attended the former Rhode Island State College, now the University of Rhode Island.

Before his family sold out, he had been vice president of Gerber's Jewelry and president of Gerbers Inc. He later became a real-estate developer, working on projects that included developing the former Coat Field into a discount operation, together with his father; founding the B/G Stores, and selling them to the NHD Hardware Store chain; and participating in partnerships that invested in the former Outlet Co. on Weybosett Street, and the Old Stone Building.

Mr. Gerber was a past member of the Capital Center Commission, the Providence Redevelopment Agency, the Zoning Board of Review, and the Port Commission. He had been appointed to the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, and had been elected as a corporator of Woonsocket Savings and Trust.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served overseas.

Mr. Gerber was a former president of Ledgemont Country Club.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Judith and Nancy Gerber, both of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Shirley Sadler of Providence and Phyllis Shapiro of Newton, Mass.; and two grandchildren. He was the father of the late Alan J. Gerber.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow at noon in Temple Emanu-El, Morris Avenue. Burial will be in Lincoln Park cemetery, Warwick.

JUNE WUDYKA - Providence

JUNE WUDYKA, 66, of Rushmore Avenue, a former clerk, died Saturday at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center after a two-year illness.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Anthony and Laura (Pofi) Spreca, she was a lifelong resident of the city. A mutual clerk at the Lincoln Downs race track, until illness forced her to retire in 1999, she previously had worked in the classified advertising department of The Providence Journal Co. for 25 years. She is survived by a son, Dak Wudyka of Chicago; an aunt, Marie DiFilippo of Cranston; and three cousins, Ronald Giangiacomo of Providence, Anna Pinelli of Smithfield and Nickki Spooner of Johnston.

The funeral will be held tomorrow, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Teresa Church, Manton Avenue. Burial will be in St. Ann cemetery, Cranston.
