Former Rep. Mary Levesque, focused on family, health issues
JAMESTOWN -- Former state Rep. Mary Elizabeth Levesque, 49, of 1 Sail St., died Monday at Newport Hospital.
Born in Portsmouth, where she lived until moving to Jamestown in 1980, she was the daughter of Anna Doyle Levesque and the late Thomas H. Levesque and the first of three in her family to win election to the Rhode Island House of Representatives.

Of the bills she sponsored that became law, her brother, state Rep. Charles J. Levesque, D-Portsmouth, said she took particular pride in legislation requiring health insurers to cover the cost of in-vitro fertilization to help "hundreds of Rhode Islanders create families."
She argued strenuously against budget cuts in programs aimed at the poor, telling colleagues during a June 1994 debate: "If we can't take care of the least among us, I'm not sure why we bother to come here."
She received a "Civil Libertarian of the Year" award from the American Civil Liberties Union in 1996 and later served on its board of directors.
A lawyer, admitted to the Rhode Island Bar in 1978, she spent one year as a Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA), seven years as an assistant public defender and 15 years in private practice.
A 1970 graduate of Portsmouth High School, she graduated from Wilmington College in Wilmington, Ohio, in 1974 and Washington University School of Law, St. Louis, Mo., in 1977.
