CATHERINE THERESA SULLIVAN - Newport
CATHERINE THERESA SULLIVAN, 91, of 70 Harrison Ave., a retired secretary, died Wednesday at the Village House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Newport, on July 29, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Corneluis P. and Nora M. (O'Sullivan) Sullivan.
Ms. Sullivan worked as a secretary in the statistical division of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center for 25 years, retiring in 1972. She was a graduate of St. Joseph's High School.
She was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society of St. Joseph Church, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and the American Association of Retired Persons.
She leaves two nephews, James L. Sullivan of Middletown and Henry A. Sullivan Jr. of Gastonia, N.C.; a niece, Barbara Jones of Middletown; and a grandnephew, four grandnieces, a great-grandnephew and two great-grandnieces. She was the sister of the late Henry A. Sullivan.
A chapel service will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Columba cemetery Chapel, Brown's Lane, Middletown.

MARTHA STOKES ESKELUND - Little Compton
MARTHA STOKES ESKELUND, 79, of Round Pond Road, a retired columnist and TV personality, died Friday at home.
She was the wife of Mogens Eskelund. Born in Cranston, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe Nelson and Mable (Bunny) Bartlett.
Mrs. Eskelund was a weekly columnist for The Providence Journal and former Evening Bulletin, writing "Letters from Marnie," and had also been the coordinator for the Jay Kroll show on WJAR-TV, interviewing celebrities such as Phyllis Diller, Liberace and Lorne Greene.
She was a graduate of Stephens College in Missouri and a member of St. Andrew's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church.
Mrs. Eskelund was a Cub Scout den mother in the 1950s, a former member of the Barrington Players, and was active with the Altar Guild at St. John's Episcopal Church in Barrington and St. Andrew's by-the-Sea, Little Compton.
She was a member of the Sakonnet Golf Club, and a past member of the Sakonnet Garden Club and Little Compton Historical Society.
Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Eric C., Lance S. and Peter M. Eskelund; a sister, Dorothy Mulcahey; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Jan. 5 at 11 a.m. in St. Andrew's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church.

HAROLD E. LEWIS JR. - Providence
HAROLD E. LEWIS JR., 66, of Union Street, a toolmaker, died Nov. 16 at Rhode Island Hospital.
Born in Providence, a son of Harold E. and Mary E. McClintock Lewis, he had lived in the city most of his life.
He was a toolmaker for many years. Mr. Lewis was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He leaves a sister, Carol Barlow of West Warwick.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. in the Rhode Island Veterans cemetery Chapel, Exeter. Burial with military honors will follow.

DOLORES M. (ELLIOTT) FIORE - Seekonk
DOLORES M. (ELLIOTT) FIORE, 63, of Lowell Street, a retired human-resource specialist, died Thursday at Miriam Hospital, Providence.
She was the wife of the late Joseph R. Fiore. Born in Newton, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Eugene J. Sr. and Jeanette M. (Lavallee) Elliott. Mrs. Fiore was a human-resource specialist at the Providence post office for 23 years, retiring in September.
Previously, she worked as a medical secretary for the State of Rhode Island at the Donley Rehabilitation Center.
She leaves a son, Raymond E. Lamoureux of Seekonk; a daughter, Lisa M. Shottek of Pawtucket; two brothers, Eugene J. Elliott Jr. of Pawtucket and Paul J. Elliott of Lincoln; two grandsons and two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Francis E. Elliott.
The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from Cheetham Mortuary Inc., 1012 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St Mary's Church, Coyle Drive, Seekonk. Burial will be in Mount St. Mary cemetery, Pawtucket.

GABRIEL CASTRO - Warren
GABRIEL CASTRO, 80, of Third Street, Warren, formerly of Providence, a former business owner, died Thursday at Riverside Nursing Home.
He was the husband of Margaret (Valentine) Castro. Born in Bristol, he was a son of the late Gabriel Maria (Nunes) DeCastro. He was the owner-operator of Swifty Cleansers, Providence, and Castro Realty, Providence, retiring in 1996.
He was educated in the Bristol public school system and later attended Johnson and Whales University, where he received certification as a real-estate broker and appraiser.
Mr. Castro was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on a PT boat as a machinist's matee 1st class. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Bristol.
He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Council 4331, Knights of Columbus, Providence, Primer-Cordeiro VFW Post 5385, East Providence, the PT Boaters Association, the Fox Point Neighborhood Association, Providence Historic Association, The Rhode Island Board of Realters, and the National Association of Appraisers.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Linda A. Simon of Bristol and Patricia A. Coningford of Warwick; a son, Gabriel R. Castro of Bristol; three sisters, Philomena Bilotti and Josephine Calce, both of Bristol, and Mary Shorey of Warren; two brothers, Joseph DeCastro of Bristol and Anthony DeCastro East Providence; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. from Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway, East Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 141 State St., Bristol. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary cemetery, Bristol.

CHRISTOPHER W. ASHTON - Newport
CHRISTOPHER W. ASHTON, 28, of Third Street, a marine technician, died Tuesday at Newport Hospital, after being stricken at home.
He was the fiancé of Michelle Smith of Newport. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, a son of Darrel W. and Lynal M. (Grigger) Ashton, both of North Kingstown, he had lived in North Kingstown before moving to Newport two years ago.
Mr. Ashton was a marine technician for DePaul Diesel of Portsmouth and a former music teacher in the Jamestown public schools, where he was the band director. While there he implemented an accreditation system, created the Band Parents Association and started Jamestown's first jazz ensemble and marching band. He was the director of the Rhode Island Youth Jazz Combo at North Kingstown High School, the conductor of Jamestown's Community Orchestra and a member of the Rhode Island Music Educators Association and the Rhode Island Jazz Educators Association.
He was a member of the North Kingstown United Methodist Church.
Mr. Ashton was a 1991 graduate of North Kingstown High School and a 1995 graduate of Berklee College of Music, in Boston. He was an avid saxophone player.
Besides his parents and fiancée, he leaves three brothers, Mark D. Ashton of Middletown, Timothy L. Ashton of Providence and William W. Ashton of North Kingstown; a sister, Melissa L. Ashton of North Kingstown; his paternal grandparents, Robert L. and Marjorie P. (Hardy) Ashton, both of Albany, Ga.; and his maternal grandmother, Evelyn G. (VanBoxel) Grigger of Cleveland. He was the grandson of the late William J. Grigger.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in The Cranstons of Wickford Funeral Home, 140 West Main St., Wickford. Burial will be in Elm Grove cemetery, North Kingstown.

RUTH (SPENCER) BYRNE - North Kingstown
RUTH (SPENCER) BYRNE, 83, of Newport Avenue, a teacher in the North Kingstown School Department for 25 years before retiring in 1989, died Monday at South County Hospital. She was the wife of the late Keron W. Byrne. Born in New Haven, Conn., she was a daughter of the late Hazelton and Lillian (Mack) Spencer.
She was a graduate of Kalamazoo (Mich.) College, and received her teacher's certificate and master's degree in special education from Rhode Island College. During her teaching career she taught elementary grades, then special-needs children.
Mrs. Byrne had also been a nurse at Kent County Memorial Hospital.
During World War II, she worked with the American Red Cross in London.
She was a member of Literacy Volunteers of America, the Retired Teachers' Association, and was a former member of the Warwick Symphony Orchestra, where she played the violin.
She was a communicant of St. Bernard Church.
She leaves two sons, Richard Byrne of Seattle and Daniel Byrne of East Greenwich; three daughters, Margaret Byrne of Wrentham, Mass., Elizabeth Byrne of Providence and Mary Byrne of Benicia, Calif.; a brother, Donald Spencer of New York; and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 415 Tower Hill Rd. Burial will be in Rhode Island Veterans cemetery, Exeter.
