BENJAMIN HAZARD SR. - Providence
BENJAMIN HAZARD SR., 79, of Hamlot Street, a former furniture mover, died Wednesday at South County Hospital, Wakefield.
He was the husband of the late Edith (Price) Hazard. Born in Exeter, he was a son of the late Warren B. and Olive (Hazard) Hazard.
He was a mover for Vito's Moving and Lindberg Moving for many years before retiring.
He leaves nine sons, Benjamin Hazard Jr. of Westerly, Ernest Hazard of Cranston, and Anthony, Milton, Robert, Michael, Rodney, Donald and Steven Hazard, all of Providence; four daughters, Linda and Joanna Hazard, both of Providence, and Marsha Hall and Barbara Hazard, both of South Kingstown; three sisters, Dora Watkins and Leona Hazard, both of Providence, and Azalea Fry of South Kingstown; and many grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in First Church of God, 209 Allen Ave., Peace Dale. Burial will be in Elmgrove cemetery, North Kingstown.

JOSEPH M. PAIVA - Providence
JOSEPH M. PAIVA, 79, of Coventry, Conn., formerly of Providence, a retired alcohol counselor, died Thursday at Manchester (Conn.) Memorial Hospital after an illness.
He was the husband of Elizabeth (Trotter) Paiva. Born in Providence on Aug. 6, 1921, a son of the late Manuel and Maria (Soares) Paiva, he was raised in Rhode Island and had been a resident of Norwich, Conn., and Manchester before moving to Coventry, Conn., during the 1970s.
He was a counselor for the State of Connecticut Alcohol Rehabilitation Department for many years before he retired. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Manchester Path Finders Club, and Norwich American Legion Post 54.
During his 37 years of sobriety, he was devoted to helping alcoholics attain sobriety for themselves according to the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the Navy.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Joseph Paiva of Middletown and John Paiva of North Kingstown; a daughter, Susan Dunlevy of Pawtucket; a stepson, David Wolmer of Hampton, Conn.; three stepdaughters, Debra Wolmer of Hampton, Diane Norris of Glenburn, Maine, and Donalyn Maneggia of Andover, Conn.; two brothers, Ernest Paiva of Providence and Alfreda Paiva in Florida; two sisters, Hilda Brasil and Mae Lorenco, both of Providence; eight grandchildren and a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Manuel and Antoine Paiva.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in St. James Church, 896 Main St., Manchester. Burial will be in East cemetery, Manchester.

LOIS IACONIS - Portsmouth
LOIS IACONIS, 74, of Hicks Lane, a retired secretary, died Thursday at home.
She was the wife of the late John F. Iaconis. Born in Boston, on March 1, 1926, the daughter of the late Charles W. and Elizabeth (Perry) Lawry, she had lived in Natick, Mass., and moved to Middletown, where she lived for three years before moving to Portsmouth three years ago.
Mrs. Iaconis was a secretary for Arnold Greene Testing Laboratories, Natick, Mass., for 15 years, retiring in the late 1980s. She was a graduate of Katharine Gibbs School in Boston.
She was a member of the Middletown Senior Center, and the First Church of Christian Scientist, Newton. After moving to Rhode Island, she attended First Church of Christian Scientist, Newport. After retirement, she volunteered for the Salvation Army in Framingham, Mass.
She leaves a daughter, Elizabeth Rego, and two grandsons, Zachary and Jonathan Rego, all of Portsmouth, and two nieces and a nephew. She was the sister of the late David Lawry.
A memorial service will be held Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. in the family home at 9 Hicks Lane.

IRENE McCANN - Pawtucket
IRENE McCANN, 93, of Jeanne Jugan Residence, 964 Main St., a retired secretary, died Wednesday at home.
She was the wife of the late Edmund J. McCann Sr. Born in Windsor, Vt., she had lived in Providence before moving to Pawtucket 30 years ago. She previously lived at Fogarty House for 11 years.
Mrs. McCann was a secretary for the American Cancer Society at the Butler Hospital Complex, retiring in 1972.
She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Parish and was involved in its choir and senior citizens group. She was a member of the Senior Citizens of St. Joseph Parish, Pawtucket. She had been active in the Fogarty House Residence Association, serving as its president. She was a longtime member of Hamilton House, Providence.
She leaves two sons, Edmund J. McCann Jr. of Seekonk and Brother Robert McCann, FSC, of Pawtucket, and five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A pontifical Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of the Jeanne Jugan Residence, 964 Main St. Burial will be in St. Francis cemetery, Smithfield Avenue.

GRACE F. (GERARDI) TARPEY - Pawtucket
GRACE F. (GERARDI) TARPEY, of Bloomfield Street, a former secretary, died yesterday at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island.
She was the wife of Joseph F. Tarpey. They celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary in June. Born in Paterson, N.J., a daughter of the late Frank and Rose (Angotti) Gerardi, she was a resident of Pawtucket for more than 50 years and a communicant of St. Teresa Church.
She was a secretary for the former TA Clarke Motors, and a merchandise secretary for the Peerless Co., later working as a medical secretary for Memorial Hospital.
She was a graduate of the former Pawtucket East High School, now William Tolman High School. She was a past treasurer for St. Teresa Mothers Club, and a member of St. Raphael's Ladies Auxiliary. She was an assistant leader in the Rhode Island Council of Campfire Girls.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Joseph F. Tarpey of Webster, Mass.; a daughter, Kathleen Sowa of Cumberland; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from Cheetham Mortuary Inc., 1012 Newport Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Teresa Church, Newport Avenue. Burial will be in Mount St. Mary cemetery.

MORRIS HAZEN - Pawtucket
MORRIS HAZEN, 88, of Pleasant Street, co-owner of the former New York Furniture, died yesterday at Miriam Hospital, Providence.
He was the husband of Bertha (Brill) Hazen. Born in Central Falls, a son of the late Harry and Fannie Goldie (Fefferman) Hazen, he was a lifelong resident of Rhode Island, and a winter resident of Hallandale, Fla., for the last 30 years.
He was the co-owner of the former New York Furniture and the former co-owner of the New Yorker Motor Lodge in East Providence.
He was a past president of Ohawe Shalom Synagogue, and a member of Temple Emanuel in Providence, the Hallandale Jewish Center and its Men's Club, and of Bnai Brith.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Irwin Hazen of Bristol; a sister, Rose Alberts of Cranston; a brother, Leonard Hazen of Narragansett; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Carl Hazen and brother of the late Edith Shaffer, Minnie and Sarah Schuster, and Terry Soren.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow at 10 a.m. in Sugarman-Sinai Memorial Chapel, 825 Hope St. at Fourth Street, Providence. Burial will be in Lincoln Park cemetery, Warwick.

LOUISE (BOICE) KING - North Smithfield
LOUISE (BOICE) KING, 87, of Largo, Fla., a retired registered nurse, died Wednesday in Balmoral Assisted Living Facility, Clearwater, Fla.
She was the wife of Alfred E. King. Born in Clinton, Pa., a daughter of the late James and Nettie (Albaugh) Boice, she had lived in North Smithfield before moving to Florida in 1972.
She was a 1935 graduate of Duke University and a 1938 graduate of the Yale University School of Nursing.
She was past president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Rhode Island Medical Society and the Women's Auxiliary of Woonsocket Hospital. She was a former member of the board of directors of the Northern Rhode Island Visiting Nurse Association. She volunteered at the Northern Rhode Island Red Cross and the Northern Rhode Island Council of the Girl Scouts of America.
She was the founder of the North Smithfield Garden Club and a member of the Pinellas Rose Society. She was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church, Largo.
Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Philip King of San Jose, Calif., Jonathan King of Truckee, Calif., and Daniel King of Bay Point, Calif.; five daughters, Carol Gamel of Largo, Robin Kedzo of Dearborn, Mich., Laurel Conway of Rochester, Mass., Alison Van Gestel of South Pasadena, Fla., and Holly Menard of Raleigh, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren.
Burial will be in Serenity Gardens Memorial Park, Largo.
