Roy M. DeMello
Born in the Açores; hockey and soccer star

Roy M. DeMello, 39, of Jennifer Drive, died Sunday, Nov. 10, 2002, at Newport Hospital. He was the son of Adriano and Zulmira (Almeida) de Mello of Bristol.

Born in Aqua Do Pao, Sao Miguel, Açores, he lived in Bristol for 35 years, after spending his first few childhood years in the Açores and Canada.

He graduated from Bristol High School in 1981 and Husson College in Bangor, Maine. He played hockey and soccer for both schools.

Mr. DeMello worked in management for Shaw’s Supermarket in South Attleboro for 18 years.

Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, David DeMello of Bristol; a sister, Adriana DeMello Erickson of Barrington; a sister-in-law, Vicki DeMello of Bristol; a brother-in-law, Peter Erickson of Barrington; five nieces, Elizabeth, Christina and Sarah Erickson of Barrington and Taylor and Maya DeMello of Bristol; and a companion, Angela Sosa of Bristol.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 15, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home at 8 a.m. A Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church will follow at 9 a.m.

Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Joseph Saunders Sr.

Served 27 years in Navy, lived in Portsmouth

Joseph Saunders Sr., 65, of the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol, formerly of 31 Carter Drive, Portsmouth, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Fatima Hospital, Providence.

Born in Chicago, Ill., on Jan. 9, 1937, he was a son of the late Estelle Kendricks.

Mr. Saunders served in the United States Navy for 27 years, retiring in 1983 as a master chief boiler technician. He was awarded chief of the year in 1973. Mr. Saunders enjoyed fixing cars for his friends.

He leaves a former wife, Christine (Quarles) Saunders of Portsmouth, and five daughters, Diane J. Mapp of North Providence, Renee Mapp of Orlando, Fla., Valerie Morgan of Cranston, Debra Johnson of Chesapeake, Va., and Cathy Saunders of Newport; three sons, Charles Martin and Joseph Saunders, both of Newport, and Harry Saunders of Orlando; 20 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Charles Martin.

His funeral was held Wednesday, Nov. 13, in the Memorial Funeral Home, Newport. Burial was in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.

Manuel J. White
Self-employed painter,
Army veteran

Manuel J. White, 73, of Highland Road, Tiverton, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, at home after a long illness. He was the husband of Janice (Hambly) White.

Born in Middletown, he was the son of Mary C. (Correia) White and the late Manuel M. White.

He served in the Army, obtaining a rank of corporal. Mr. White was a self-employed painting contractor for many years, and a life-long resident of Tiverton.

He was a communicant of St. Christopher’s Church in Tiverton.

Mr. White is survived by his mother and wife; one brother, Anthony F. White of Oneida, NY; two sisters, Mary T. Botelho of Portsmouth, and Catherine B. Rancourt of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, and 19 nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John J. White.

A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m. in St. Christopher’s Church, Main Road, Tiverton. Arrangements are by the Boule Funeral Home, 615 Broadway, Fall River, Mass.

Rita A. Baker
Retired bookkeeper, formerly of Tiverton

Rita A. (Joyce) Baker, 81, of North Main Street, Fall River, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at the home of her granddaughter, Melinda T. Rafanan of Dighton, Mass., after an illness. She was the wife of the late Harold J. Baker.

Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late James H. and Rose Ann (Hughes) Joyce, she had lived on Crandall Road in Tiverton before moving to Fall River 56 years ago.

Mrs. Baker worked as a bookkeeper for various Fall River area companies, including Fall River Manufacturing and Stafford Clothing, before retiring in 1983.

She was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Class of 1939, and Herrick’s Business School.

Besides her granddaughter, she leaves a daughter, Mary A. Vieira of Fall River; a grandson, Rodney J. Vieira of Gaithersburg, Md.; a great-granddaughter, Emily Paige Rafanan; and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral was held Tuesday, Dec. 17, from the Boule Funeral Home, Fall River, with a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Evelyn Amaral
Born in Bristol, devoted grandmother

Evelyn (Bettencourt) Amaral, 71, of Franklin Court, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Delphine Amaral.

Born in Bristol, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Ermilinda (Falcoa-Sousa) Bettencourt. She moved to Florida in the 1970s and returned to Bristol in 2000.

Mrs. Amaral was an assembler for the Pall Land Marine Corp. in Florida for several years before retiring in 1993. In Bristol, she had also worked for the former Bristol Manufacturing.

She was an active leader for the Campfire Girls for many years and a devoted grandmother who enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, music and crafts.

She leaves four sons, Keith R. and his wife Susan, Jeffrey R. and his wife Carolina, and Kevin P. and his wife Kym Amaral, all of Bristol, and Craig S. Amaral and his wife Heather of Georgia; a daughter, Deborah A. Parks and her husband Gary of New Port Richey, Fla.; a brother, Frank "Buddy" Bettencourt of Warren; a sister, Loretta Estrella of New Port Richey, Fla.; ten grandchildren and three great-grand children.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, Dec. 19, at St. Mary’s Church. Burial will be in Bay Pines Veterans Cemetery, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH, 44720.

Beatrice O. Warry
Leaves family here

Beatrice O. (D’Arcy) Warry, 96, of 8 Juniper Court, formerly of Niagara Falls, N.Y., died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Metacom Manor Health Center. She was the wife of the late Sidney A. Warry.

Born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of the late George and Harriet I. (Brooks) D’Arcy. A resident of Bristol for the last two years, she lived in Niagara Falls, N.Y., for most of her life.

She was a secretary for 20 years for Hugh Ewart, Certified Public Accountant of Niagara Falls, N.Y., before retiring in the early 1960s.

Mrs. Warry was a member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Niagara Falls, where she was in the choir for many years. Along with her late husband, she did volunteer work at Memorial Hospital in Niagara Falls for many years.

She leaves a daughter, Barbara W. Barr of Bristol; a granddaughter, Melissa S. Ferro of Bristol; a grandson, Adam S. Barr of Mount Washington, Ky.; and three great-grandchildren, Louie Ferro of Bristol, Thomas Barr of Germany and Savannah Barr of Mount Washington, Ky.

She was also the sister of the late Vernon D’Arcy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service on Thursday, Dec. 19, at 2:30 p.m. in St. James United Methodist Church, Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Burial will follow in Niagara Falls Memorial Park, Lewiston, N.Y.

Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. James United Methodist Church, 4661 Porter Road, Niagara Falls, NY, 14305.

Mary Cabral
Homemaker was a Bristol resident for 68 years

Mary (Silva) Cabral, 92, of Silver Creek Manor, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002 at Silver Creek Manor. She was the wife of the late Manuel Cabral.

Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Jacintho and Antonia (daConceicao) Silva. She lived in Bristol for 68 years after moving from Philadelphia, Pa., where she lived the previous 24 years.

Mrs. Cabral was a homemaker.

She leaves a son, John Schrank of Florida; two stepsons, Manuel and George Cabral; a sister, Lillian Paiva; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

She was also the mother of the late Bertha Paiva, and the sister of the late Rose, Louise and Alice Paiva.

Her funeral services were held on Saturday, Dec. 14, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church. The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant of the Mass.

Her burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where the Rev. Ferland offered the committal prayers.

Donald A. Fontaine
Westport High graduate was supervisor at Casual Male

Donald A. Fontaine, 50, of State Road died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at home after a long illness.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of Joseph and Cecile (Bernier) Fontaine of Westport. He had lived in Westport for most of his life.

Mr. Fontaine was a graduate of Westport High School. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Parish.

Mr. Fontaine was employed for the past 31 years by Casual Male, Canton, as a supervisor.

Besides his parents, he leaves two sisters, Denise Goulart of Taunton and Diane Melanson of Westport; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was the grandson of the late Wilfred and Malvina Bernier and Ernest and Lillian Fontaine.

His funeral was held on Saturday, Dec. 14, from Auclair Funeral Home in Fall River, with a funeral Mass in Our Lady of Grace Church. Entombment was in Notre Dame Mausoleum.

Donations may be made to Hospice Outreach, 502 Bedford St., Fall River, Mass. 02720.

Henrietta H. Clave
Helped found Presbyterian Church

Henrietta H. Clave, 89, formerly of Greenwood Avenue, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at the Crestwood Nursing Home in Warren. She was the wife of the late Robert M. Clave.

Born in Detroit, Mich., a daughter of the late Leo and Helen (Shubrung) Straesser, she lived in Barrington for 37 years, previously living in Detroit, New Jersey and parts of South America.

A founding member of the Barrington Presbyterian Church, she worked in the purchasing department for the State of Rhode Island for 18 years before retiring. With her bible study group she traveled to Rome and Jerusalem. She was a member of the Riverside Grange, where she won many awards for her paintings, and was active in the Barrington YMCA and the Barrington Senior Center. She enjoyed line dancing.

She leaves a daughter, Linda Clave of Brighton, Mass.; a son, Ronald Clave of Connecticut; a grandson and her dear friend, Bill Carlow of Riverside.

A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, in Barrington Presbyterian Church, 400 County Road. Burial will be in the Gettysburg National Military Park and Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pa. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity works of the Barrington Presbyterian Church, 400 County Road, Barrington, R.I. 02806.

Arrangements were by the William J. Smith and Son Funeral Home in Warren.
