John Ruggieri Jr.
Former president of Barrington Town Council

John Ruggieri, Jr., 71, of 264 Waseca Ave. in Barrington, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 2002, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. He was the husband of Irene (Paolino) Ruggieri; they were married for 47 years.

Born in Bristol, a son of the late John and Mildred (Federico) Ruggieri, Mr. Ruggieri had lived in Barrington for 46 years.

A 1949 graduate of Bristol Memorial High School, Mr. Ruggieri was a former president of the Barrington Town Council and a retired bank executive. He spent many years in banking, generally in the East Bay and Providence areas. He began his banking career at Industrial National Bank and subsequently moved to Old Stone Bank. He spent the final 25 years of his career with People’s/Shawmut Bank, primarily in its Barrington branch and at its Turks Head office in Providence. He retired in 1994 as a vice president of Shawmut Bank.

Mr. Ruggieri was elected to his first term on the Barrington Town Council in 1990, and was elected to a second term and appointed president in 1996. He resigned from the council in 1998 due to illness.

He was very active in the Rotary Club of Providence until his death. He also participated in the Small Business Association SCORE program and the Barrington Citizens Scholarship Program. He was a member of the Credit Committee at the Columbus Credit Union. A communicant of Holy Angels Church in Barrington, he was a member of the Finance Committee. Mr. Ruggieri was a United States Navy Veteran who served in the Korean War from 1949 to 1954. He was an avid runner.

Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, John T. Ruggieri III and Steven Ruggieri, both of Barrington, Dr. Paul Ruggieri of Bristol and The Rev. James Ruggieri of the Holy Spirit Catholic Community in Central Falls; a daughter-in-law, Peggy Ruggieri; a brother, Aniello "Chips" Ruggieri of Barrington; three sisters, Rose Vollaro of Warren and Katherine Murray and Etta Benevides, both of Bristol; and four grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Michael Ruggieri.

Funeral services will be held be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27 from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church, Maple Avenue. Burial will follow in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence. Calling hours are Tuesday, Nov. 26, from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rhode Island chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 75 Sockanosset Crossroad, Cranston, R.I. 02920, or to Rotary Charities Foundation, Rotary Club of Providence, P.O. Box 9244, Providence, R.I. 02940.

Edward J. Zbyszewski
Leaves sister in Barrington

Edward J. Zbyszewski, 85, of Warren, died Sunday, Nov. 17, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Dolores (Laurenzo) Zbyszewski; they had been married for 49 years.

Born in Warren, a son of the late Marion and Antonina (Cichon) Zbyszewski, he was a lifelong resident of the town.

Mr. Zbyszewski, along with his brother Bernard, owned the former Murphy Texaco Station in Warren. He had also worked as a tool crib operator in quality assurance for Kaiser Aluminum in Bristol for more than 35 years, retiring in 1979.

He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater.

He was an usher at St. Alexander Church in Warren and was a member of the Honor Roll of the Mechanics Fire Station there.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sisters, Madeline Kurowski of Barrington and Stacey Riccio of Bristol; three sons, Kenneth A. Zbyszewski of Rockland, Mass., Stephen J. Zbyszewski of Bristol and Michael E. Zbyszewski of Warren; a daughter, Marymartha More of Warren; a brother, Bernard "Murphy" Zbyszewski of Warren; and two grandchildren. He was a brother of the late James and Martha Zbyszewski.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Nov. 21, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Alexander Church. Burial, with military honors, followed in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery in Warren.

Alice Camara
Great-grandmother worked at Betsy Ann Mfg.

Alice "Simbala" (Viveiros) Camara, 93, of University Drive, Westport, formerly of Hope Street, Fall River, died Monday, Nov. 18, 2002, at St. Luke’s Hospital. She was the widow of Jacinto Rafael Camara.

Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Manuel "Simbala" Viveiros and Maria (Arruda) Viveiros. She moved to Santa Barbara, Sao Miguel, Azores, at the age of two, then moved to Fall River in 1953. She had lived in Westport for four months.

She was a member of Santo Christo Church in Fall River.

Mrs. Camara was a floor worker at Betsy Ann Manufacturing for many years until her retirement.

She was a member of the Sociedade Cultural Acoreana Inc.

She leaves two sons, Manuel "Simbala" Viveiros Camara of Westport and Joseph "Simbala" Viveiros Rafael Camara of Assonet; two brothers, Jose "Simbala" Viveiros and Henrique "Simbala" Viveiros, both of New Bedford; five sisters, Virginia "Simbala" Correia, Inez "Simbala" Furtado, Ambrozina "Simbala" Medeiros, Conceicao "Simbala" Carvalho and Lourdes "Simbala" Arruda, all of New Bedford; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Manuel "Simbala" Viveiros, Jose "Simbala" Viveiros, Alice "Simbala" Viveiros, Marianna "Simbala" Barreira, Maria "Simbala" Cabral, Filomena "Simbala" Soares, Olivia "Simbala" Supriano and Theresa "Simbala" Viveiros.

Her funeral was held Friday, Nov. 22, at the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home in Fall River, followed by a Mass at Santo Christo Church. Burial was at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River.

Rev. David E. Richers

Funeral services for the Rev. David E. Richers S.S.C. were held Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial at the Columban Fathers Retirement Chapel. The Rev. Thomas V. Normanly S.S.C., who was ordained with Father Richers on December 20, 1952, was the principle celebrant of the Mass. The Rev. John Burger S.S.C. concelebrated, read the prayers of final commendation and was the homilist for the Mass.

The Most Rev. Louis E. Gelineau, Bishop Emeritus of Providence, presided at the Mass.

Readers for the Mass were members of Father Richers’ family William Stauffer, Charles Ogle and Michael McCusker. Offertory gifts were presented by Karen and Sharon Stauffer.

Sheila Schattle was the organist for the Mass.

Burial followed in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence, where Father Harrison read the committal prayers.

Father Richers, 78, the son of the late Edgar M. and Ella Marie (McFadden) Richers, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the Hulitar Hospice Inpatient Center, Providence.

Arrangements were by the Sansone Funeral Home.

David L. Camara
Sold potatoes out of his truck on Franklin Street

David L. "Potato Man" Camara, 73, of 58 Franca Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at his home. He was the husband of Margaret (Tallman) Camara for 52 happy years.

A lifelong Bristol resident, he was the son of the late Manuel and Mary (Raposa) Camara.

Mr. Camara was a wire worker for 28 years at Kaiser Aluminum in Bristol and Portsmouth. As a hobby he sold potatoes from his truck on Franklin and High streets for many years.

He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Church and a member of the Holy Name Society.

Besides his wife, Mr. Camara leaves three sons, David R., John Paul and Thomas A. Camara, all of Bristol; a daughter, Arline Smith of Roque Bluffs, Maine; a sister, Theresa P. Almeida of Bristol; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Eric, Thomas, Marlayna, Diana and Brian Camara, and Lisa and Matthew Smith; and three great-grandchildren.

He was also the brother of the late Lillian Camara and Manuel Camara.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 25, from the Sansone Funeral Home with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church.

The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. The Rev. Barry J. Gamache was the concelebrant. Pam and Jennifer Camara were the readers. Arline Smith, Marlayna Camara and Diana Camara presented offertory gifts. Amanda, JoAnn and Pam Camara and Lisa Smith presented long-stemmed roses.

Burial followed in St. Mary Cemetery where Father Ferland led the committal prayers.

Sons David R., John Paul and Thomas A. Camara, grandsons Thomas J. and Bryan A. Camara and William F. DelSanto and Larry E. Smith were pallbearers.

Lawrence Vierra
Worked at Tiverton High,
W.W.II Navy veteran

Lawrence Vierra, 75, of Tiverton, died unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002. He was the husband of the late Hilda (Rodrigues) Vierra.

Born in Tiverton, a son of the late Frank A. Vierra and the late Bertha (Clark) Vierra Sisson, he lived in Tiverton for most of his life.

Mr. Vierra worked as a custodian for Tiverton High School until his retirement in 1984.

He served in the Navy as a seaman second class during World War II and was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal and the American Theater Medal. Mr. Vierrra was a communicant of Holy Ghost Parish, Tiverton. He was an avid bowler.

He leaves a daughter, Sandra Boleski of Tiverton; a son, Bruce Vierra of Tiverton; two sisters, Lorraine Markey of West Warwick and Norma Simpson of Tiverton; a brother, Roger Vierra of Hanover, Mass.; six granddchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral was held on Saturday, Nov. 23, from the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, Tiverton, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Ghost Church. Burial was in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton.

Sydney Maynard
Retired diesel mechanic,
crewed on yacht Corsair

Sydney Maynard, 89, of 70 Harrison Ave., Newport, formerly of 125 Quaker Hill Lane, Portsmouth, died on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at the Village House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was the husband of Hilda M. (Stone) Maynard to whom he was married for 65 years.Born in Brighton, England, on Nov. 25, 1912, he was the son of the late Sydney and Elizabeth (Batchelor) Maynard. He came to the United States in March, 1926 and was a 1930 graduate of Port Washington High School, in Port Washington, N.Y.

Mr. Maynard was a starboard launch operator for J.P. Morgan’s grand yacht Corsair in 1930. During World War II, he worked at Fort Adams and later worked as a diesel mechanic at the Newport Naval Base for many years, retiring in 1973. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, Lodge #32, and the United Congregational Church in Middletown. He enjoyed woodworking, furniture making and working on foreign cars.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Linda Kelly of Portsmouth and Jacqueline Ferrarese of Kingston, Mass.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Nov. 26, in United Congregational Church, Middletown. Burial was private.Memorial donations may be made to United Congregational Church, P.O. Box 4262, Middletown, RI 02842.

Raymond L. Malone Jr.
Worked for dairy farms and for Electric Boat

Raymond L. Malone Jr., 48, of 19 Chapel St., Newport, died Friday, Nov. 22, 2002, at home.

Born in Newport on June 18, 1954, he was a son of Raymond L. Malone of Little Compton and Mary (Dugan) Allan of Middletown.

Mr. Malone worked for the former John Kesson Dairy Farm, West Main Road, Middletown, and the Louis Escobar Dairy Farm, Middle Road, Portsmouth. He had also worked as a welder for Electer Boat at the Quonset Point Facility. He was a graduate and member of the last class at De La Salle Academy, Newport, in 1972.

Besides his parents, he leaves a son, Jeramiah "J.J." Malone of Winsor, Fla.; a brother, Thomas Malone of Portsmouth; a sister, Katherine Jarvis of Portsmouth; two nieces and a nephew.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2002, at 8 a.m. from Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in St. Joseph’s Church, Broadway and Mann Avenue, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.
