Jennie Rebello
Born in Bristol; leaves a brother here
Jennie (Ferreira) Rebello, 88, of Naugatuck, Conn., died Monday, Oct. 21, 2002, at her home. She was the wife of the late Manuel Rebello.
Born in Bristol, she was the daughter of the late Adolf and Jennie (Joyce) Ferreira.
She was a communicant of St. Francis Assisi Church in Naugatuck and a former member of the St. Francis Church Catholic Council.
She volunteered for many years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, Conn.
Mrs. Rebello leaves a daughter, Mary DiMaria of Naugatuck; two brothers, Eugene Ferreira of Waterbury and Norman Ferreira of Bristol; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 24, from St. Francis of Assisi Church in Naugatuck. Burial followed in St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck.

Frank R. Perry
Worked at Kaiser, Warren resident for 20 years
Frank R. Perry, 94, of the Grace Barker Nursing Center, died Friday, Nov. 1, 2002, at the center. He was the husband of the late Ruth Irene (Oliver) Perry.
Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Jacinto and Mary Rose (Bernardo) Perry. He lived in Warren for 20 years, previously residing in Bristol.
Mr. Perry worked for Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Company in Bristol for 35 years as a banbery operator, retiring in 1971. He was also a self-employed sign painter for many years, working in Newport, Bristol and New York.
He was a member of the Masons and the Bristol Train of Artillery.
He leaves two daughters, Diana Just of Bristol and Janet Dow of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren and a great-grandson.
His funeral was on Monday, Nov. 4, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, followed by a funeral service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Warren. Burial was private.
Karen L. Pedersen
Avid swimmer and boater, honor student in high school
Karen L. Pedersen, 37, of Westwood Street in Bristol, died Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2002, at her home. She was the daughter of Linda C. Larson and stepfather Ralph H. Larson of Bristol.
Born in Norwich, Conn., Ms. Pedersen moved to Bristol 30 years ago.
She, along with her identical twin sister Kelly Pedersen, whom she loved very much, was a Rhode Island Honor Society student at Bristol High School, where they both excelled in track and field.
Both Kelly and Karen received full scholarships to Lake Erie College in Chicago.
Described by her mother and stepfather as a "beautiful girl" with "a heart of gold," Ms. Pedersen was an avid swimmer and boater.
She leaves her mother, Linda C. Larson; her sister, Kelly L. Pedersen of Bristol; her stepfather, Ralph H. Larson of Bristol and a godmother, Muriel Kane of Bristol.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church. Internment will be private.
William M. Stokes
Former professor, published scientist
William M. Stokes, 81, of 16 Quoquonset Lane, Little Compton, died Monday, Nov. 4, 2002, at Grand Islander Center in Middletown.
Born in Lancaster, Pa., he was a son of Clara and the Reverend William Stokes. He was a 1944 Phi Beta Kappa graduate in chemistry from Franklin and Marshall College and received a Ph.D in chemistry from Yale University in 1951.
After receiving his bachelor’s degree, he worked for three years as a chemist at Hamilton Watch company. He came to Providence College as an Assistant Professor in 1951 and rose rapidly through the ranks to Professor in 1959.
His strong research program with the Medical Research Laboratory at Providence College played an important role in bringing to the campus the National Institutes of Health Grant, which funded the Honors Science Program. His numerous scholarly publications were published in the most prestigious journals and he provided a favorable influence on the work of his colleagues in the chemistry department.
Mr. Stokes’ command of the biochemical literature was admired by all his colleagues. He was known on campus as a superb source for scientific information, as well as for questions about literature, art, music, history and biology.
He was a member of the American Chemical Society, AAAS, N.Y. Academy of Sciences, American Oil Chemists’ Society and Sigma Xi. He had a lifelong interest in botany and horticulture and he frequently helped identify botanical specimens, both in the college botany courses and in local greenhouses.
Mr. Stokes was keenly interested in China. He traveled there, studied the language, the history, the literature, practiced calligraphy and collected Chinese art. He retired from Providence College as Professor Emeritus in 1991.
His burial will be in Trumbauer Cemetery of the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Leola, Pa. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on the Providence College campus in the Priory Chapel on Wednesday, Dec. 4.
He is survived by several nieces and nephews.
John Motta Jr.
Lifelong resident; World War II veteran
John Motta Jr., 86, of Cedar Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at Roger Williams Hospital. He was the husband of the late Angelina (Mello) Motta.
Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was the son of the late John and Maria Motta.
Mr. Motta was a World War II veteran and a rubber worker for Davol Rubber Company for 35 years before retiring in 1976.
He was a member of the V.F.W. of Bristol.
He leaves a son, John Motta III, of Bristol; a daughter, Barbara Lindsey of New York; a brother, Manuel Motta of Florida; three sisters, Eva Maturi of Bristol, Margaret Ventura of Connecticut, and Loretta Corbin of Rehoboth, Mass.; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
He was also the brother of the late Joseph Motta.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 8, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home at 8 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church at 9 a.m.
Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Anna E. Cardoza
Funeral services for Anna E. Cardoza were held on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church.
The celebrant of the Mass was the Rev. Thomas J. Ferland. The con-celebrant of the Mass was the Rev. Louis Diorgo.
Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Rev. Ferland offered the committal prayers.
Gifts were presented by her daughters-in-law Alice and Barbara Cardoza and son-in-law Frank Balzano.
Bearers were Mrs. Cardoza’s grandsons Michael A. Cardoza, David A. Cardoza and Paul Cardoza, along with Philip Normandin, George (Butch) W. Normandin and Alan J. Merrit.
Mrs. Cardoza, 87, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, at Silver Creek Manor. She was the wife of the late Antonio "River" Cardoza.
Maria G. Tavares
Former seamstress, lifelong Warren resident
Maria Gloria Tavares, 91, formerly of Connolly Avenue, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Grace Barker Nursing Center. She was the wife of Nicholas Tavares.
Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late Manuel and Grace (Froias) Medeiros. She was a lifelong Warren resident.
Mrs. Tavares was a seamstress at the former Well Made Dress for several years before retiring. She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Makers’ Union.
She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Warren.
Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Dennis and Richard Tavares, both of Bristol; two sisters, Irene LaMothe of East Providence and Shirley McKnight of Wauchula, Fla.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Manuel and John Medeiros.
Her funeral was on Monday, Nov. 4, from the William J. Smith Son Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church. She was buried in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.

Rose Camera
Longtime resident, devoted wife and mother
Rose (Alfano) Camera, 80, of 27 Paull St., died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at Metacom Manor Health Center. She was the wife of Joseph Camera for 54 years.
Born in Warren, she was the daughter of the late Francesco and Immaculate "Margaret" (Sullo) Alfano. She was a Bristol resident for 54 years.
She worked as a seamstress at Priscilla Sportswear and at the former U.S. Rubber Company of Bristol. Following her retirement she did part time housekeeping at Silver Creek manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Camera was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved to bake for her family.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Joseph P. Camera; a daughter-in-law, Susan A. Camera; a granddaughter, Kathryn M. Camera, all of Bristol; two sisters, Phyllis Figuerida of Warren and Mary Codola of Barrington; and two brothers, Anthony Alfano of Warren and Louis Alfano of Riverside.
She was also the sister of the late William Alfano.
Funeral services were from the Sansone Funeral Home on Monday, Nov. 4, with a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial followed in North Burial Ground.

Edward J. Cox
Formerly of Tiverton, worked in garment industry
Edward J. Cox, 85, of 500 Wilbur Ave., Somerset, formerly of Redwood Road, Tiverton, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 2002, at Clifton Rehabilitation Nursing Center, Somerset. He was the husband of the late Rita "Pat" (Berube) Cox.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late James and Annie Cox, he had lived in Tiverton for many years before moving to Somerset three years ago.
Mr. Cox had worked in Fall River’s garment industry for many years at firms including Whittendon Garment, Taunton, where he spent several years.
He was a Marine veteran of World War II.
Mr. Cox leaves a son, Edward J. Cox II of Bristol; two daughters, Barbara Felker of East Greenwich and Patricia A. Furze of Rumford; two sisters, Gertrude Turgeon of Tiverton and Dorothy Ring of San Diego, Calif.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Annie Bishop and James and Thomas Cox.
His funeral was held on Wednesday, Nov. 6, from the Auclair Funeral Home, Fall River. Burial was in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.
