Mary T. Mendoza
With her husband, owned Mendoza’s Market
Mary T. Mendoza, 84, of the Grace Barker Nursing Center, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at the Center. She was the wife of the late Alfred W. Mendoza.
A lifelong resident of Warren, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Agnes (Mello) Moniz.
Along with her husband, Mrs. Mendoza owned and operated the former Mendoza’s Market on Kickemuit Road for 20 years. She also worked as a dietary aide for many years for the Grace Barker Nursing Center.
Mrs. Mendoza was a lifelong communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church.
She leaves one son, Alfred W. Mendoza Jr. of Barrington; two daughters, Patricia J. Foley of Hilton Head, S.C., and Marjorie M. Mendoza of Swansea; three sisters, Evelyn Moniz and Linda Machado of Warren and Rosalie Marcello of Barrington; and two grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Joseph, Manuel and Frank Moniz and Laura Riggi.
Her funeral was on Saturday, Aug. 17, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas the Apostle Church. She was buried in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.
David H. "Moose" Muccino
Former salesman was "Volunteer of the Year"
David H. "Moose" Muccino, 68, of 165 Fatima Drive, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Leonora (Alves) Muccino to whom he had been married for 40 years.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Szeregowicz) Muccino. He lived in Warren most of his life.
Mr. Muccino was a salesman for the Deep Rock Bottling Co., formerly of Barrington, retiring in 1996 after 30 years. He was later employed as a maintenance worker for E.F.D. Inc. of East Providence for seven years.
He was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church for more than 40 years and was a member of its choir. He was Eucharistic minister for Grace Barker Nursing Center for the past five years and was a volunteer member of the collection counting team at church.
Mr. Muccino was also a volunteer for TAP IN in Barrington for five years, the Bristol Good Neighbors Soup Kitchen and Meals on Wheels. He was named "Volunteer of the Year 2002" by the Warren Grange. He also belonged to the East Providence Community Chorus for many years.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Thomas D. Muccino of Barrington; a daughter, Cheryl A. Moreau of Barrington; a sister, Nancy-Etta Muccino of Warren; four grandchildren, six nieces and one nephew. He was the brother of the late Elaine Menucci.
His funeral will be Thursday, Aug. 22, at 8 a.m., from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, 500 Metacom Avenue. He will be buried in St. Alexander’s Cemetery in Warren. Visiting hours are Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Jeanne Thivierge
Worked as CNA at Grace Barker
Jeanne Thivierge, 46, of Metacom Avenue, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of Joseph A. Thivierge.
Born in Suncook, N.H., she was a daughter of the late Herve and Cecile (Gamelin) Malo. She moved to Warren at the age of 10 and had been a resident ever since.
Mrs. Thivierge was a certified nursing assistant at Grace Barker Nursing Center in Warren for eight years. She had previously been employed at Crestwood Nursing Home in the housekeeping department for 10 years. She was a communicant of St. Jean Baptiste Church, Warren.
Mrs. Thivierge was an avid genealogist who researched her entire family histories.
Besides her husband, she leaves a sister, Claire Homer of Cumberland, and a brother, Richard Malo of Bristol.
Her funeral was on Saturday, Aug. 24, from the William J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jean Baptiste Church. She was buried in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery.
Priscilla Rockwell
Antiques dealer; she enjoyed reading, sewing
Priscilla Church Rockwell, 80, of Fairway Drive, died Friday, August 2, 2002 at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the wife of Robert K. Rockwell; they would have celebrated their 60th anniversary this Saturday.
Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Gilbert L. and Lousia (Randall) Church, she lived in Barrington for 48 years. Mrs. Rockwell owned and operated East Bay Antiques in Warren for 22 years before retiring in 1991; the business specialized in 19th century American furniture.
A master refinisher, she attended Pembroke College, now Brown University, as well as the Lincoln School for Girls in Providence. She enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting and interior decorating.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Jeffrey M. Rockwell of Riverside; a daughter, Anne Rockwell Petto of Bay Village, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Laura Petto. She was a sister of the late Catherine C. Flynn and Nelson R., Lousia E, Eben R., Samuel C and Laura C. Church.
A memorial service was held Saturday, August 17, in St. John’s Episcopal Church. Burial followed in Forest Chapel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Barrington Public Library, County Road, Barrington, R.I. 02806. Arrangements were by the W. Raymond Watson Home in Riverside.
William Blackford
Worked on USA’s early nuclear tests
William Blackford, 78, of 12 Stratford Road, died Tuesday, August 6, 2002 at Orchard View Manor in East Providence. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Protheroe) Blackford.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., a son of the late Benjamin and Elizabeth (MacArthur) Blackford, he graduated from Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. in 1950 with a degree in electrical engineering.
He was a tube engineer for General Electric in the 1950s and became a sales engineer. He then worked for Plessey Unlimited of England and moved to Barrington in 1984, retiring in 1989.
He had served on the Prudential Committee of the Central Congregational Church in Providence and was instrumental in the restoration of the Church’s stained glass windows. He was a member of the Barrington Seniors bridge group and the Barrington Congregational Church. An Army veteran of World War II, he worked on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, N.M. and was at Bikini Island during the first atomic testing there.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, William S. Blackford of Oradell, N.J.; two daughters, Elizabeth M. Blackford of Cliffside Park, N.J. and Melinda B. Zimmerman of Davis, Calif., a sister, Elizabeth B. Middleton of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
He was the father of the late Linda E. Blackford and the brother of the late Benjamin Blackford.
There will be a private graveside service and a memorial gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VAMOS!, an American charitable organization benefiting Mexican children, in care of Isaac and Nancy Patch, Delage Farm Road, Franconia, N.H. 03580. Arrangements were by the Smith-Mason Funeral Home in Riverside.
Rose M. Takacs
Leaves granddaughter in Barrington
Rose M. Takacs, 86, a resident of the Silver Creek Manor nursing center in Bristol, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002 at home. She was the wife of the late Albert Takacs.
Born in Bridgeport, Conn., a daughter of the late John and Anna (Pavelko) Takacs, she lived in Fairfield, Conn. and at Bay Spring Village in Barrington before moving to Bristol.
Mrs. Takacs worked at Hubbel Inc. in Bridgeport, Conn. for over 25 years until her retirement.
She leaves a daughter, Kathleen Salko of Lubec, Maine; two granddaughters, Tanya DiMarco of Barrington and Aimee Falko of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by the Cremation Society of Rhode Island.
Helen Dopart
50-year Tiverton resident, member of Central Baptist
Helen (Ryba) Dopart, 82, of 1025 Main Road, Tiverton, died on Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at St. Anne’s Hospital, Fall River. She was the wife of the late Edward John Dopart.
Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Joseph and Pauline (Lapacki) Ryba, she had lived in Tiverton for 50 years. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Dopart was a member of Central Baptist Church in Tiverton.
She leaves a son, Edward J. Dopart Jr. of Tiverton; two daughters, Linda Lacer and Nancy Kenney, both of Middletown; a brother, Edward Ryba of Long Island, N.Y.; and a grandson.
Her memorial service was held on Saturday, Oct. 5, in Central Baptist Church, Tiverton. Arrangements were by the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Tiverton.
Pasqualina Martinelli
Homemaker, was talented seamstress
Pasqualina Martinelli, 71, of Warren, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, at Roger Williams Hospital. She was the wife of the late Frank A. Martinelli Jr.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Angelo and Caesarina (Fratarcangela) DelConte. She lived in Warren for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Martinelli was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Alexander Church.
A talented seamstress, she also enjoyed making dolls.
She leaves two sons, Frank A. Martinelli III of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Michael A. Martinelli of Bristol; four daughters, Ann Marie Lavallee and Carol Ann M. DaSilva, both of Warren, Barbara A. Castigliego of Johnston and Diane M. Costa of Bristol; 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Michael DelConte.
Mrs. Martinelli’s funeral was on Monday, Oct. 7, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Alexander Church. She was buried in St. Alexander Cemetery.
Phoebe Moran-Mello
Lifelong Bristol resident
Phoebe (Alves) Moran-Mello, 88, of Dawn Hill Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2002, at Roger Williams Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Henry C. Mello and Ernest Moran.
Born in Bristol, she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Emma (Cabral) Alves.
A lifelong resident, Mrs. Moran-Mello was a homemaker and member of the Benjamin Church Tenants Association.
She leaves a son, Stephen E. Moran of Bristol; a stepson, Henry C. Mello Jr., of Bristol; a stepdaughter, Patricia Cheetam of Bristol; a brother, John Alves of Lakeland, Fla.; six sisters, Emily Silva, Tina Paiva, Betty Silvia, Margaret McKenzie and Dorothy Marshall, all of Bristol, and Elsie Cabral of Lakeland; three grandchildren Stephen E. Moran Jr. of New Bedford, Lorie Ann DiColo of Cranston and Kenneth Moran of Rochester, N.Y.; and a great-grandson, Stephen E. Moran III.
She was the also mother of the late Ernest Moran and sister of the late Manuel "Steve" William, Anthony Alves and Mary Coelho.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 7, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church. The Rev. Joseph D. Santos Jr. was the celebrant of the Mass.
Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Rev. Santos offered committal prayers.
Steven E. Moran Jr., Kenneth Moran, Vincent R. DiColo, Ronald Moran, Peter Moran and Kevin Moran were pallbearers.
Readers were Steven E. Moran Jr. and Kenneth Moran. Gifts were presented by Mrs. Moran-Mello’s daughter-in-law Kathleen J. Moran and granddaughter Lorie Ann DiColo.
Jaoquim Medeiros
Funeral services for Jaoquim "Jack" Medeiros, were held Friday, Oct. 5, 2002, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church. The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant of the Mass. Mr. Medeiros’ daughters Lisa Crain and Linda Goulart presented gifts and were readers for the Mass.
Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where the Rev. Ferland offered committal prayers. Mr. Medeiros’ nephews Jeffrey Reynolds, Ronald Medeiros, Richard Medeiros, Joseph Brayton, Peter Quintal and Robert Medeiros were pallbearers.
Mr. Medeiros, 65, of Wood Street, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, at his home.
Marguerite Souza
Born in Warren, owned dress shop in Providence
Marguerite Souza, 84, of Oak Hill Nursing Home, Pawtucket, formerly of Carousel Drive, East Providence, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at the home.
Born in Warren, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Ethyl (Stokes) Doyle. She was raised in Warren, moved to East Providence n the 1930’s and had lived in Pawtucket for the past six years,
Ms. Souza was the owner of the former Marguerite Powers Dresses in Providence.
She leaves a daughter, Sharon Duquette of Riverside; four grandchildren, Mellisa Simpson, David Tierney and Robert Duquette, all of East Providence, and Karalyn Duquette of west Hollywood, Calif. She was the mother of the late Carolyn Tierney, twin sister of the late Myrtis Robinson and sister of the late Helen Orth.
Her funeral was private.
