Paul Haig Mardirossian (alternate obituary)
World War II Army, veteran leaves family here

Paul Haig Mardirossian, 85, of Warwick, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol. He was the husband of the late Patricia (Richards) Mardirossian.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Elder Haig Mardirossian VYM and Veronica (Paskerian) Mardirossian, both born in Armenia. He lived in Salem and Peabody, Mass., for many years before returning to Rhode Island.

He was the owner of the former Paul’s Watch Repair in Providence, and had been affiliated with several area jewelry companies.

He retired as foreman at the General Electric Plant in Lynn, Mass.

His past employment included Langilier Manufacturing Co. in Cranston, where he was a machinist. Mr. Mardirossian was also employed by Brown and Sharpe Manufacturing Co. as a turret lathe operator, and the Walsh-Kaiser Co. Shipyard where he was a machinist foreman.

He was a 1936 Central (Providence) High School graduate, where he also took post-graduate courses and was an All-State football player. He attended the Rhode Island School of Design, majoring in drafting, mechanical drawing and blue printing.

He was a Massachusetts Trade School graduate, holding a diploma in watch making and repair.

Mr. Mardirossian served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a Staff Sergeant, and received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.

He enjoyed boating, traveling, and sports.

He leaves a daughter, Dallas Vinbury-Russell of Bristol and formerly of Barrington; a granddaughter, Donna L. Vinbury; and a great-granddaughter, Rebekah D. Vinbury, both of Bristol.

He was the brother of the late John H. Mardirossian, brother-in-law of the late Anna M. Mardirossian, uncle to the late Pamela Beaupre and Valerie Tessier, and great uncle to the late Robert Valvo of Narragansett.

A private funeral with full military honors took place at the Rhode Island Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Exeter.

Mary T. Mendoza
With her husband, owned Mendoza’s Market

Mary T. Mendoza, 84, of the Grace Barker Nursing Center, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at the Center. She was the wife of the late Alfred W. Mendoza.

A lifelong resident of Warren, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Agnes (Mello) Moniz.

Along with her husband, Mrs. Mendoza owned and operated the former Mendoza’s Market on Kickemuit Road for 20 years. She also worked as a dietary aide for many years for the Grace Barker Nursing Center.

Mrs. Mendoza was a lifelong communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church.

She leaves one son, Alfred W. Mendoza Jr. of Barrington; two daughters, Patricia J. Foley of Hilton Head, S.C., and Marjorie M. Mendoza of Swansea; three sisters, Evelyn Moniz and Linda Machado of Warren and Rosalie Marcello of Barrington; and two grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Joseph, Manuel and Frank Moniz and Laura Riggi.

Her funeral was on Saturday, Aug. 17, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas the Apostle Church. She was buried in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.

Julius A. McRee
Floor coverer, Korean War veteran

Julius A. McRee, 73, of 164 Fatima Drive died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Helen (Masterson) McRee.

Born in Tallulah, La., he was the son of the late Robert and Mabel (McKenzie) McRee. He lived in Warren for 49 years, previously living in Bristol and Mississippi.

Mr. McRee worked as a floor coverer for Fains in Providence for 22 years, retiring in 1987. He was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.

He enjoyed fishing and camping.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Dennis McRee of Seekonk and Douglas McRee of Pascoag; three daughters, Donna McRee of Bristol, Deborah Blanchette of Warren and Diane Corsini of Narragansett; two sisters, Blanche Paiva of Bristol and Bobbie Ruth McClurg of Florida; and seven grandchildren. His funeral was private.

Lawrence J. Greenwood Jr.
World War II veteran, fire captain

Lawrence John Greenwood Jr., 82, of Courtney Street, Fall River, died Monday, Aug. 19, 2002 at Hallmark Nursing Home, New Bedford, Mass. He was the husband of Dorothy (Garant) Greenwood. They had been married for 52 years.

Born in Fall River, a son of the late Lawrence Greenwood Sr., and the late Ethel (Oliver) Greenwood, he had lived in Tiverton before moving to Fall River.

For 25 years until retiring in 1975, Mr. Greenwood was a captain in the Newport Naval Base fire department. He was a World War II Navy veteran and received a Purple Heart.

He was a member of the Lion’s Club of Tiverton.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Joyce Vopni of Seattle, Wash.; a son, George Clayton Greenwood of Tiverton; a stepdaughter, Carol Roades of Brookings, Ore.; 10 grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late George C. Greenwood.

His funeral will be on Friday, Aug. 23 at 10 a.m. in the Hathaway Home for Funerals, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River. Cremation will follow at Swan Point Crematory, Providence.

Stephen Shoesmith Jr.
Former Westport resident was trailer truck instructor

Stephen Shoesmith Jr., 57, died Friday, Aug. 16, 2002, at home in Swansea with his family at his side, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Germaine L. (St. Laurent) Shoesmith.

Born in Fall River, the son of Stephen Shoesmith Sr. and Ruth M. (Dyson) Shoesmith of Westport, he lived most of his life in the Westport and Swansea area.

Mr. Shoesmith was employed by New England Tractor Trailer Training School as a trailer truck driving instructor for more than 10 years.

He attended St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Fall River.

Besides his wife and parents, he leaves a daughter, Karen Ann Shoesmith of Swansea; a sister, Judith Ann Nunes and her husband, Wayne, of Dartmouth; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24, at Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport.

Joseph P. Pacheco
Lifelong resident and World War II veteran

Joseph P. Pacheco, 81, of 725 Hope St. died Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, at Silver Creek Manor. He was the former husband of Anna (Cruz) Pacheco.

Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, he was the son of the late Adelino and Theresa (Teixeira) Pacheco.

Mr. Pacheco graduated from Colt Memorial High School in 1940 after attending summer Citizens Military Training Camps at Fort Adams. He began his working career at the former Bristol YMCA.

After joining the United States Navy in 1942 he worked at Quonset Points Highway Department and the Newport Navy Base before being assigned to the newly commissioned destroyer U.S.S Allen Sumner as a store-keeper and gunner. During the war the ship participated in engagements throughout Micronesia and Leyte supporting the U.S. island-hopping strategy in the Pacific Theater.

Following the war, Mr. Pacheco worked in the textile industry as a weaver at the former Collins and Aikman and later at Paragon-Worsted Company formerly in Oneyville as a loom fixer. In 1962 he was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service at the former Customs House and retired from civil service in 1982.

He sustained a personal interest in boating, fishing, crabbing and quahogging throughout his life in Bristol. He was a member of the Anthony C. Almeida Post #237, Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In addition to his former wife, he leaves a sister, Louise (Pacheco) Barboza of Bristol; two sons, Allen M. Pacheco of Morgan Hill, Calif., and Rodney P. Pacheco of Bristol; and two grandchildren, Jonathon Pacheco of Wickford and Tawnia Pacheco of Rocky Hill, Conn.

He was also the brother of the late Margaret (Pacheco) Duffy and the late Mary (Pacheco) Polaski.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, from the Sansone Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth’s Church. The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Daughter-in-law Diane Pacheco delivered the eulogy and nieces Barbara Contente and Edith Papitto were the readers for the Mass. Offertory gifts were presented by Anna Pacheco and son and daughter-in-law, Allen P. and Diane Pacheco.

Burial with military honors by the U.S. Navy followed in North Burial Ground where Father Ferland read the committal prayers. Son Rodney P. Pacheco was the eulogist at the committal, and grandson Jonathon W. Pacheco read a poem.

Pallbearers were grandchildren Jonathon W. Pacheco and Tawnia A. Pacheco, and nephews Paul Contente, Steven Contente, Chucky Cruz and Ralph G. Papitto.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Division, Inc., 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Germaine C. Munro
Food service director, 44-year Bristol resident

Germaine C. Munro, 62, of 43 King Philip Ave., Bristol, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Donna Parrillo, after a two-year illness. She was the wife of Walter P. "Flash" Munro, to whom she had been married 44 years.

Born in Warren, she was a daughter of the late Napoleon J. and Olivine (Desmarais) Gauthier. She lived in Bristol for 44 years, previously living in Warren.

Mrs. Munro was a food service director and cook for more than 30 years at various health care facilities, retiring in 2000.

She attended St. Mary’s Academy Bay View in East Providence, the former Felt and Tarrent School, formerly in Providence, and the Community College of Rhode Island. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Bristol and was a former den mother for the Webelos Pack out of St. Mary’s Church.

Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Walter "Rocky" Munro of Bristol; three daughters, Denise Willingham of DeSoto, Texas, and Donna Parrillo and Molly Binns, both of Bristol; four brothers, Paul, Napoleon Jr. and Norman Gauthier, all of Norwich, Conn., and David Gauthier of Long Beach, Miss.; a sister, Cecile Kirby of Norwich, Conn.; eight grandchildren, Patricia Hoehn of DeSoto, Joshua Munro, Alissa and Colleen Parrillo, Christopher Riley, Laura and Kyle Sampson, and James Mongeon, all of Bristol; two great-grandchildren, Holly and James Willingham, and a best friend for 40 years, Carol Tanielu of Bristol. She was the grandmother of the late Patrick H. Hoehn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Aug. 24, at 9 a.m., in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St., Bristol. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Sansone Funeral Home in Bristol. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted.

William D. Neal
Leaves daughter in Barrington

William D. Neal, 72, of East Providence, died Monday, July 29, 2002 at Orchard View Manor in East Providence.

Born in East Providence, a son of the late Harold B. and Ruth M. (Woods) Neal, he had lived in East Providence most of his life.

Mr. Neal was a sexton at St. Barnabas Church in Warwick for 10 years, and had previously worked as a custodian at the former Shephard’s Company in Providence for many years.

He leaves two daughters, Barbara Lyons and Sharon Kenny, both of Warwick; six sisters, Joan Koehler of Barrington, Shirley Messier of Pawtucket, Margaret Bradley of Westport, Mass., Ruth Harrop in South Carolina, Jane Sullivan of East Providence and Gail Neal of New Bedford; three brothers, Kenneth Neal of Pawtucket, Joseph Neal of Arizona and John Neal of Sandwich, Mass.; and five grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Harold and Glenn R. Neal.

Funeral and burial services will be private.

Valberg A. Leach
Formerly of Tiverton, professional secretary

Valberg A. Leach, 91, of Sudbury, Mass., died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2002, at Oak Knoll Healthcare Facility, Framingham, Mass., where she had lived for the past two years. She was the wife of the late Everette H. Leach.

Born in New Britain, Conn., on May 18, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Martin A. and Annie C. (Johnson) Anderson.

She lived in Tiverton from 1972 until 1998, and previously lived in New Britain. She moved to the Metro-West area of Massachusetts to live near her daughter, Linda H. Dodoin, and her family.

Mrs. Leach was a professional secretary until her retirement in 1972, and had been employed first by the Robert Morris Investment Co., and later by Robert C. Buell and Co. Investment Firm, both of which were located in Hartford, Conn.

In addition to her daughter, she leaves two granddaughters.

Private graveside services will be held at Pocasset Hill Cemetery in Tiverton where the Rev. David Hackman will officiate.

Memorial donations may be sent to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 525 Broadway, Newport, RI 02840.
