William E. Sousa
Owned Sunoco Station in town
William E. Sousa, 83, of Kickemuit Village, 20 Libby Lane, formerly of Baker Street, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol.
Born in the Azores, he moved to Bristol as a young boy. He lived in Bristol until he moved to Warren where he lived for 60 years.
Mr. Sousa was the owner and operator of the former Sunoco Station on Main Street, Warren, for 40 years, before retiring. After retiring, he worked as a security guard at the former Berkshire-Hathaway Company in Warren, for a number of years.
He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church in Bristol.
He leaves a sister, Mary Landino of St. Petersburg, Fla., many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was the brother of the late Antone E. DeSouza, Benedict E. "Benny" Sousa, Manuel E. Sousa, and John, Ernest and Joseph Sousa and Helen Bowler.
His funeral was on Friday, Aug. 9, from the Sansone Funeral Home in Bristol, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Elizabeth’s Church in Bristol. He was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bristol.

William E. Sousa, 83, of Warren, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol. He was the son of the late Manuel and Celestina (Silvia) Sousa.
A resident of Warren for 60 years he previously resided in Bristol, having come here from the Açores as a young boy.
For more than 30 years Mr. Sousa owned and operated the Sunoco Service Station, formerly on Main St. in Warren, before retiring a number of years ago. After his retirement, Mr. Sousa worked at the Berkshire-Hathaway Company, formerly in Warren.
Mr. Sousa was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church.
He leaves a sister, Mary Landino, of St. Petersburg, Fla., and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Mr. Sousa was also the brother of Antone E. DeSouza, Benedict E. "Benny" Sousa, Manuel E. Sousa, John Sousa, Ernest Sousa, Joseph Sousa and Helen (Sousa) Bowler.
His funeral services were from the Sansone Funeral Home Friday, Aug. 9, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church. The Rev. Manuel Pereira was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Father Pereira read the committal prayers.
Clara B. Viera
Lifelong Bristol resident, worked at Kaiser Aluminum
Clara B. (George) Viera, 80, of Bayview Avenue, died Thursday, Aug. 8, 2002, at her residence. She was the wife of the late Joseph P. Viera.
A lifelong Bristolian, she was the daughter of the late Joseph R. and Rose George. Mrs. Viera was a 1940 graduate of Colt Memorial High School and a longtime employee of Kaiser Aluminum. She was a member of the Kaiser Retiree Association.
She leaves a daughter, Mary Anne Fuller of West Suffield, Conn.; three sisters, Mary Brinza and Margaret Belmore of Bristol, and Annie Colliton of Vernon, Conn.; a brother, Joseph R. George Jr., of Bristol; and a granddaughter.
She was the sister of the late Rose Bento and Minnie Hughes.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 10, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church.
Celebrant of the Mass was the Rev. Thomas J. Ferland. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery where Rev. Ferland offered committal prayers.
Alex Cournoyer, Thomas Hughes, William Hughes, Joseph Brinza, Peter Bento, and Steven Merritt were pallbearers.
Edward G. Taber
Stone wall builder leaves three sons, grandchildren
Edward G. Taber, 55, of Hargrave Street, Fall River, died unexpectedly on Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, while working on a job in Westport. He was the husband of Nancy A. (Medeiros) Taber and the son of Elliot H. Taber, Jr., of Westport and the late Caroline (Sonntag) Taber.
He was born in Fall River and lived in Westport until moving to Fall River in 1965. He worked as a self-employed stone wall builder.
In addition to his wife and father, he leaves three sons, Edward G., Derrick E. and Chad E. Taber, all of Fall River; a brother, Barry E. Taber of Westport; two sisters, Diana Taber of New Bedford and Judith Taber of Westport; six grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, at 10 a.m. at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport.
Stevan Alan Anthony
Marine carpenter, Coast Guard veteran
Stevan Alan Anthony, 55, of Key West, Fla., and formerly of Portsmouth, died Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2002, at home.
Born in Fall River, on Dec. 10, 1946, he was the son of the late Seth R. and F. Jeanette (Porter) Anthony.
Mr. Anthony worked as a self-employed marine carpenter in Key West, Fla., for over 30 years. He also served in the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War.
He leaves three brothers, Seth R. Anthony Jr., of Marietta, Ga., S. Dow Anthony of Virginia Beach, Va., and Paul D. Anthony of Enfield, Conn.; three sisters, Betty Jean Galli of Ft. Pierce, Fla., Joan P. Starrett of Fall River, and Candace A. Warner of Portsmouth; many nieces and nephews and many great nieces and great nephews.
He was also the friend of the late Carl D. Cochrane.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Arthur E. Gonsalves
Tiverton resident, groundskeeper
Arthur E. Gonsalves, 70, of 598 Stafford Road, Tiverton, and formerly of Portsmouth, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of Joanne (Cavaca) Gonsalves.
Born in Portsmouth on Nov. 26, 1931, he was the son of the late Arthur Rose Gonsalves and Mary (Oliveira) Gonsalves.
Mr. Gonsalves most recently worked as a groundskeeper at Belcourt Castle in Newport. He also maintained many private properties throughout Portsmouth. He previously worked at Shaw’s Supermarket in Middletown and as a security guard at the Newport Naval Base.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Gonsalves leaves a daughter, Patti Gonsalves of Tiverton; two sons, Michael Gonsalves and Timothy Gonsalves, both of Tiverton; a brother, Anthony Gonsalves of Tiverton; and a grandson, Barry Furtado of Portsmouth.
His funeral was held Tuesday, Aug. 13 in First Baptist (Old Stone) Church in Tiverton. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

Francis H. Hoey
Former Bristol resident,
Korean War Navy veteran
Francis H. Hoey, 70, Manchester, N.H., died Saturday, April 2, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Frances D. (Machado) Hoey.
Born in Manchester, a son of Francis H. and Anna (McDermott) Hoey Sr., he lived on Fales Road in Bristol and in Bradenton, Fla., before returning to Manchester.
Mr. Hoey was employed by the City of Manchester Highway Department as a superintendent, retiring after 35 years.
He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the League of One Thousand Men of the Precious Blood Monastery, and a former member of the finance board of St. Francis of Assisi Parish. He was educated in the Manchester school system.
Besides his wife, Mr. Hoey leaves two sons, Brian M. Hoey and Timothy F. Hoey, both of Manchester; two daughters, Mary Jane Lyons and Joan Marie Quatrucci, both of Manchester; two brothers, Edward Hoey of Manchester and John Hoey of Lakeland, Fla.; a sister, Janice Singleton of Manchester; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral was held last month in Manchester. Burial with full military honors took place in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, N.H.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Columban Fathers, Saturday, Aug. 24, at 9 a.m.
James J. Murphy Jr.
Business owner, WWII veteran
James J. Murphy Jr., 76 of VFW Parkway, West Roxbury, Mass., formerly of Fall River and Tiverton, died Thursday, July 25, 2002 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Boston, after an illness.
He was the husband of Lucille (Borges) Murphy of Tiverton and Fall River.
Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late James J. Murphy Sr., and Monica C. (Murphy) Murphy.
He was an auditor for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and later, an associate of the Frank X. Perron Insurance Agency. He was a founder and president of the James J. Murphy Insurance Agency Inc., and Murco Finance.
He owned and operated the Luco Boat Co., in Fall River and Tiverton, and Sakonnet Lobster and Restaurant at Grinnel’s Beach, Tiverton.
He was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School and attended Suffolk University and received his bachelor’s degree from Bryant College.
Mr. Murphy was a member of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity, president of the Bryant Fall River Club, and a member of Fall River Chamber of Commerce. He was on the Board of directors of the former Fall River General Hospital.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the VFW, DAV, Knights of Columbus, the Elks, Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Tiverton Yacht Club.
He was a parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church, Fall River, and St. Christopher Church, Tiverton.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Joanne L. Rothenbuhler, Deborah M. Raposa and Lisa M. Smaldone, all of Tiverton; two brothers, Joseph P. Murphy of Brockton, Mass., and William H. Murphy of East Providence; four granddaughters and two grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Robert M. Murphy.
His funeral was held Tuesday, July 30 at Silva-Faria Funeral Home, Fall River. A Mass was held at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Bedford.
Agnes C. Munroe
Tiverton resident, retired billing clerk
Agnes C. (Mello) Munroe, 74, of 148 Randolph Ave., Tiverton, died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002, at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River. She was the wife of the late Kendall A. Munroe.
Born in Fall River on June 23, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Maria (Medeiros) Mello. She resided in Tiverton for most of her life.
Before retiring in 1989, she was employed for many years as a billing clerk at Mattie Imports. She was also a communicant of Holy Ghost Church in Tiverton.
Mrs. Munroe leaves two daughters, Monica Giannotti of Fall River and Virginia M. Barek of Somerset; a sister, Beatrice Ferreira of Tiverton; three brothers, Jesuino "Joe" Mello, Manuel C. Mello and John Mello, all of Tiverton; nine grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Cecelia M. Raposa and the sister of the late Mary Mello.
Her funeral was held Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2002, from the Oliveira Funeral Home in Fall River, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Ghost Church in Tiverton. Burial was in Pocasset Hill Cemetery in Tiverton.
