FERNANDE KAMINSKI
Fernande (Poulin) Kaminski, 84, of Westerly, a former Bristol, Conn., resident and widow of Charles J. Kaminski, died Friday Jan. 7, 2005 at Yale New Haven Hospital.
Fern was born in Waterville, Maine and was a daughter of the late Adolphe and Ernestine (Roy) Poulin. She lived in Canada before settling in Hartford, where she met and married her husband Charles.
She later moved to Bristol for 20 years, then to Wolcott, Conn., for 20 years, and most currently in Westerly for the past four years.
As a young woman, Fern traveled cross-country to visit her wartime husband. Fern was an avid line dancer who loved to perform as well as teach others. She could be found dancing at the Wolcott Senior Center, and later at the Westerly and Pawcatuck Senior Centers where she was a member. She also was a member of the A.A.R.P., and enjoyed playing billiards with her sister.
Fern has joined her husband Charles, with whom she shared 48 precious years and is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Leonard C. and Kathleen Kaminski of Westerly, a sister, Antoinette Caccomo of Fort Worth, Texas; two grandchildren and their spouses, Leonard C. Jr. and Marie Kaminski of Coventry, R.I. and Jennifer and Gary Grice of Westerly; nieces and nephews, Barbara Molusis of Old Saybrook, Conn., Patricia Laverio of Bristol, Robert Emonds of Harwinton, Conn., Christine Sims of Bristol, John Caccomo of Texas, Mark Caccomo of California, Shirley Machesney of East Windsor, Conn., Gloria Dockham of Colorado, and a very special "niece," Melissa Brown of Westerly; and several great nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by three brothers, Roger, Raymond, and Ernest Poulin and two sisters, Doris Emonds and Sr. Ernestine Marie.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at 9 a.m. from Funk Funeral Home, 35 Bellevue Ave., Bristol, Conn., to St. Ann Church, Bristol, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 U.S. Highway #1, North Brunswick, NJ 08902-4301.
ALEXANDER BROWN
Alexander Brown, 88, died in Newport Beach, Calif., on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005.
He formerly lived in Lord's Point, Conn., and was a member of Dunn's Corners Community Church.
He was the husband of the late Mary Margaret (Dink) Brown and the late Bertha (Cooper) Brown.
Alexander was born in Paisley, Scotland, on July 31, 1916, the son of the late David and Annie (Bryant) Brown. He came to this country with his family in 1927.
He was a graduate of Westerly High School, class of 1934. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Rhode Island State College in 1938, a master's degree from Middlebury College in 1940, and a doctorate from MIT in 1944.
He was captain of the cross-country team at Rhode Island State College in 1938 when they won the New England Championship.
During World War II, he worked at Harvard Medical School and MIT on research for massive sources for blood transfusion related to war casualties.
He worked as a research chemist for Union Carbide in West Virginia and New Jersey for 34 years. He developed new products such as "Super Blue" and "Wash and Wear Wool."
He is survived by four children and their spouses, Dr. David Brown and his wife Donna of Brea, Calif., Dr. Diana Brown (Dangel) and her husband Robert Dangel of Bryn Mawr, Pa., Alan Brown and his wife Marlene of Crestwood, Ill., and Donald Brown and his wife Sherry of Lake Forest, Calif.
He is also survived by four grandchildren, Christopher Brown, Adam Leive, Lisa Brown, and Elizabeth Dangel; and two sisters, Ann Brown and Margaret Donath, both of Pawcatuck.
He was an avid reader, tennis player, gardener, sailor, artist, bird watcher, chess player, piano player, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend.
Burial will be private in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly, is handling arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dunn's Corners Community Church, 221 Post Road, Westerly, RI 02891.
