Vernon A. Johnson
Helped found St. James Lutheran Church in town
Vernon A. Johnson, 94, of Adams Point Road, died Monday, July 8, 2002 at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of the late Margaret (Rolf) Johnson.
Born in Solomons, Md., a son of the late Andrew and Virginia (Condiff) Johnson, he had lived in Barrington since 1954. He was a vice president at the Fram Corporation until retiring in 1968.
Mr. Johnson was one of the founders of St. James Lutheran Church in Barrington. A 33rd degree Mason, he was a member of Rhode Island Country Club and served as president of the club in 1971 and 1972.
He leaves a son, V. Rolf Johnson of North Scituate. He was the brother of the late Walter H. Johnson and Ethel C. Mattingly.
Funeral and burial in Forest Chapel Cemetery in Barrington will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Lutheran Church, 49 Middle Highway, Barrington, R.I. 02806. Arrangements were by the Smith-Mason Funeral Home in Riverside.
Bernard Knowles
Mechanic was World War II Navy veteran
Bernard "Bernie" Knowles, 69, of Westport died Monday, July 1, 2002, at home after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Dolores (Pacheco) Knowles.
Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Frank and the late Wanda (Puchlopek) Knowles. He lived in Westport for the past 37 years.
A self-employed mechanic, Mr. Knowles also worked at Bernie’s Auto Repair and Norwest Gas Station, both in Westport, and at Shell Gas Station in Dartmouth.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of V.F.W. Ouellette Post #8.
Besides his widow, he leaves a son, Bernard Knowles, Jr., of Westport; a daughter, Doreen Knowles-Breton of Westport; and three grandchildren, Shay Pearce, Jude Breton and Kiera Breton.
Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by Potter Funeral Home.
Manuel A. Custadio
World War II Navy veteran loved fishing, gardening
Manuel Almeida "Mac" Custadio, 74, of 287 American Legion Highway died Friday, June 28, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Ruth (Bergeron) Custadio of Fall River and the companion of Tammy Soares of Westport.
Born in Dartmouth, he was the son of the late Joseph Almeida Custadio and the late Maria (Da Trindade) Custadio.
Mr. Custadio had formerly worked as a textile printer for Duro Manufacturing of Fall River and Hull Dye of Derby, Conn. He also worked as a landscaper.
He was an avid fisherman and gardener.
He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, serving as a seaman second class. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the American Theater Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal. He served on the U.S.S. Providence, the U.S.S. Sperry and at the submarine base in Pearl Harbor.
Besides his wife and companion, he leaves seven sons, Thomas and Michael Custadio, both of Westport; Steven Custadio of Dartmouth, Paul, Brian J. and Keith J. Custadio of Fall River and Randell J. Bergeron of Fall River; a daughter, Paula Dyer of Tiverton, R.I.; a brother, Joseph Costa of Alabama; two sisters, Mary Dalessio of Connecticut and Beatrice Cummings of South Carolina; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Mark Custadio. He was also the brother of the late William and John Costa.
Alice B. Pavao
Seamstress lived in Westport 35 years
Alice Barbara (Golden) Pavao, 81, of Tickle Road died Wednesday, June 26, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Manuel R. Pavao.
Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late William Golden and the late Margaret (Flynn) Golden.
She was raised in Fall River and worked as a seamstress in the city’s garment industry for many years.
She moved to Westport 35 years ago and was also a resident of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla., during the winter months for the past 25 years.
She was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
Mrs. Pavao was a communicant of Our Lady of Grace Church.
Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, Jeanne Pavao of Somerville; two sons, Joseph R. Pavao of Westport and Richard F. Pavao of Fall River; three sisters, Mildred Lanigan of Ulster Park, N.Y., Patricia Lamoreaux of Lake Katrine, N.Y., and Jean Hagan of Mystic, Conn.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were by the Hathaway Home for Funerals in Fall River.
Mary Camara
Tiverton resident, retired sewing machine operator
Mary (Correia) Camara, 94, of 2446 Highland Ave., Fall River, formerly of West Canonicus Street, Tiverton, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at the Catholic Memorial Home, Fall River.
Born in Fall River on March 30, 1908, she was a daughter of the late Antonio and Emerlinda (Periera) Correia. She had lived in Tiverton for 40 years.
Mrs. Camara was employed for 20 years as a sewing machine operator at the former Fayette Sportswear Co., Fall River, retiring in 1970.
She was a member of Holy Ghost Parish, Tiverton.
She leaves two daughters, Barbara Silvia of Tiverton and Madeline Gracia of Southborough, Mass.; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Emelia Burgess.
Her funeral was held on Monday, July 1, from the Oliveira Funeral Home, Fall River, followed by a mass of Christian Burial in Holy Ghost Church, Tiverton. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
Albert S. Domingos
Proprietor of Apex Shade Co, Tiverton resident
Albert S. Domingos, 71, of Robert Gray Avenue, Tiverton, died on Friday, June 28, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River. He was the husband of Dolores A. (Rego) Domingos.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Julio and Virginia (Felix) Domingos.
Mr. Domingos was the proprietor of Apex Shade Company in Fall River for 40 years until retiring.
He was a member of the Prince Henry Society and had also served as the society’s past president. He was involved with the Association for the Development of the Catholic University of Portugal and was a longtime member of the Quequechan Club in Fall River.
Mr. Domingos served in the Air Force during the Korean War, earning the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the ROK Press Unit Citation.
His funeral was held on Monday, July 1, from the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, Tiverton, with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Ghost Church, Tiverton. Burial was in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton.
Betty M. Franco
Former resident; loved to play piano
Betty M. (Astone) Franco, 71, formerly of Barrington and Bristol, died Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the former wife of Peter Franco Jr. of Lyme, Conn.
Born in Beacon, N.Y., a daughter of the late Anthony and Reba (Demerit) Astone, she also lived in Guilford, Conn., for several years.
A homemaker, Mrs. Franco attended the University of Vermont and the Katharine Gibbs School. She was an avid piano player and reader, and loved cats and dogs.
Besides her former husband, she leaves three sons, Brian P. Franco of Barrington, Norman C. Franco of Charlestown, N.H. and Mark W. Franco of Douglas, Mass.; a brother, Robert Astone of LaQuinta, Calif.; and four grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Todd and Bruce Franco.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 26, in the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home in East Providence. Burial was in Beacon, N.Y.
Carmen Millotte
Lived most of life in Mexico
Carmen (Perez) Millotte, 93, of Lister Drive, Barrington, died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at the Crestwood Nursing and Convalescent Home in Warren. She was the wife of the late Jorge Millotte.
Born in Guadalajar, Mexico, a daughter of the late Dario and Natalia (Reyes) Perez, she lived in Barrington for 14 years, spending most of her life in Mexico. She was a piano teacher before her retirement and a communicant of St. Luke's Church.
She leaves two sons, Jorge Millotte of Dallas, Texas and Luis Millotte of Mexico City; a daughter, Carmen Messier of Barrington; nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild. She was the mother of the late Yolanda Millotte.
A memorial Mass will be held at a later date. Arrangements were by the William J. Smith and Son Funeral Home.
Earl William Wall
Civil engineer worked worldwide
Earl William ("Bill") Wall, 74, of Hillcrest Acres, Westport, died Saturday, June 29, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Dorothy E. (Williams) Wall, to whom he had been married for the past 52 years.
Born in San Diego, a son of the late Earl Gordon Wall and the late Louise (Castonguay) Wall, he lived in San Diego before moving to Westport and then Fall River. He lived in Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa; Anchorage, Alaska; Houston and Dallas, Texas; and Eastham, Mass., before returning to Westport in 1986.
A civil engineer, Mr. Wall specialized in building construction and became associated with the George A. Fuller Construction Company of Boston for several years. He then built a power plant for the government of Liberia, West Africa. He worked on several construction projects for RCA and Atlantic Richfield in Anchorage, Alaska, and was the construction engineer for the ARCO Tower, the tallest building in Alaska. Most recently, he was a part-time building inspector for the Town of Westport.
Mr. Wall was a graduate and president of his class of the former Msgr. Prevost High School, class of 1946, and a member of the alumni association. He was also a graduate of the former Bradford Technical Institute, now UMass Dartmouth.
He served on the finance committee of the Town of Eastham for several years and was a member of the NRA.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Allison Elizabeth "Bonnie" Horton of Marietta, Ga., and Dr. Kimberly Anne Lederman of Clayton, Missouri; two sons, William Scott Wall of Boulder City, Colo., and Jeffrey B. Wall of Groton, Conn.; two grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
His funeral was held Tuesday, July 2, at the ‘Cherry Place’ Home of Waring-Sullivan, Ashton, Coughlin, Driscoll in Fall River. Burial was private.
Margaret Anderson
Leaves daughter in Barrington
Margaret (Blum) Anderson, 79, of Warren, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital.
Born in Madison, Wis., the daughter of the late George Louis Blum Jr. and Berdella M. Hanson, she was educated at the University of Wisconsin and Rhode Island College. A teacher, she was employed by Seekonk public schools from 1960 until her retirement in 1976. In the ensuing years, she worked with children at Bradley Hospital, St. Andrew's School in Barrington, in day-care centers and as a private tutor.
She leaves three daughters, Virginia L. Turner of Barrington, Sandra L. Hagstrom of Falmouth, Mass. and Margaret L. Swanson of Portsmouth; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service is planned.
