Richard S. Brochu
Warren Athletic Hall of Famer, teacher
Richard S. Brochu, 66, of Haile Street died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence. He was the husband of Barbara (Gadbois) Brochu.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Charles and Ann (Splain) Brochu. He was a lifelong Warren resident.
A teacher, Mr. Brochu was a graduate of the former Rhode Island College of Education where he earned basketball and soccer varsity letters. He coached the Warren High School cross country team in 1966, before becoming the high school soccer coach in Smithfield, where he taught English at Gallagher Junior School before retiring. He had also been a teacher at the former Warren High School.
Mr. Brochu coached the Smithfield team to the state championship in 1973, and was the first Rhode Island high school soccer coach to attain 100 victories. He was elected to the Rhode Island Soccer Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1984, and the Warren Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001.
In his youth, Mr. Brochu excelled as a long-distance swimmer, winning several races, in particular the Hog Island to Bristol swim in 1953. He was the overall champion of the Warren water carnival in 1954.
Mr. Brochu served as a referee for the Warren Schoolboy Indoor Soccer League in 1981, 1982 and 1983.
In 1956, he joined the Warren Fire Department, Central Engine Co. #1, and remained a member his entire life. He also served as the company’s treasurer for more than 20 years.
Mr. Brochu was a longtime member of the Warren Federal Blues Colonial Militia and a member of the German-American Club and the Ocean State Fisherman’s Association. He was a communicant of St. Mary of the Bay Church, and had served four years in the Coast Guard.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Mark S. Brochu of Warren; and a brother, Charles Brochu of Greenville. He was the brother of the late Anne Connery.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated for Mr. Brochu on Tuesday, July 9, at 9 a.m. in St. Mary of the Bay Church. He was buried in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.

Guerino J. Dorsi
Loved golf; born in Barrington
Guerino J. "Gary" Dorsi, 79, of Anoka Avenue, died Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at the Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown. He was the husband of Gloria (Magliocchetti) Dorsi.
Born in Barrington, a son of the late Ralph and Mary (Palumbo) Dorsi, he was a lifelong resident of Barrington. Mr. Dorsi was a self-employed golf cart repairman for the past 15 years, and had also worked for the Rhode Island Country Club.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Normandy, northern France, the Rhineland and also the African Middle Eastern Theater. He received the Purple Heart and the Good Conduct medal. He was an avid golfer and a communicant of Holy Angels Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Gary P. Dorsi of Newport and Michael G. Dorsi of Barrington; a brother, Peter Dorsi of Barrington; a sister, Lucy Cabral of Riverside; and a grandchild.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 6, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial in Holy Angels Church. Burial followed in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence.
John Costa
Mechanic was lifelong Warren resident
John Costa, 92, of 22 Luther St., died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Victoria "Lena" Costa to whom he had been married for 67 years.
Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Manuel and Mary (Lima) Costa. He was a lifelong Warren resident.
Mr. Costa worked as a mechanic for many years at E&M Motors and Asselin Chevrolet in Warren. He was a member of St. Mary of the Bay Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John Costa Jr. of Warren; two daughters, Rita C. Galinelli and Ann Marie Blouin, both of Warren; one brother, Daniel Costa of Warren; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Rev. Joseph Costa, Arthur Costa, Mary Papa and Josephine Gudas.
Mr. Costa’s funeral was on Saturday, July 6, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Bay Church. He was buried in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.
James A. Goodheart
Navy veteran of two wars, worked at Duke estate
James Al Goodheart, 71, of 218 Riverside St., Portsmouth, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002 at Miriam Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of Anna (Grey) Goodheart.
Born in Exeter, N.Y. on April 16, 1931, he was the son of the late James Edward and Alice (Trudeau) Goodheart.
Mr. Goodheart was a Navy cook for 20 years, serving during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a groundskeeper for the Doris Duke estate in Newport from 1982 to 1985.
He was a member of the St. John’s Masonic Lodge of Portsmouth, the Tiverton Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Tiverton Rod and Gun Club.
He leaves three sons, James Al Goodheart Jr. of Elk Grove, Calif., Mark F. Goodheart of Seekonk, Mass., and Kim L. Goodheart of Warwick; three Daughters, Linda Ann Murak of Exeter, Denise R. Aguiar of Middletown and Renee E. Goodheart-Thomas of Eufaula, Ala.; and 10 grandchildren.
His funeral was held on Saturday, July 20, at Connors Funeral Home, Portsmouth. Burial was in the Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

George H. Sylvia Jr.
Former councilman, leave s family in Tiverton
George H. Sylvia Jr., 57, of Sylvia Road, Tiverton, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, in St. Anne’s Hospital, Fall River. He was the husband of Gail T. (Manchester) Sylvia.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late George H. Sylvia Sr. and Roberta (Stanchfield) Sylvia. He was also the stepson of Harriet Sylvia of Tiverton.
He worked for Humphrey Lumber since 1962, working his way up to president of the oil division.
He was a Tiverton councilman from 1972 to 1976, and chairman of the Tiverton Personnel Board from 1976 to 1978, Tiverton Water Authority from 1987 to 1996 and the Water Department from 1995 to 1996.
He was a softball coach for the Tiverton Little League and co-director of St. Madeline CYO. At St. John the Baptist Church, Westport, where he was a member, he was a Eucharistic minister and a member of the RCIA Team. He also was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board.
From 1996 to 1997, he was a member of the Fall River Rotary Club. He was also past president a Paul Harris Fellowship recipient while at the rotary. He was Chairman of the Fall River Rotary Foundation from 1998 to 2001, a member of the board of directors for the United Way of Fall River, and a chairman of the Annual United Way Campaign in Tiverton. He was also a member of Charlton Associates and a board member of CMH Prospect Properties.
In addition to his wife and stepmother, he leaves four daughters, Kristen von Campe of Groton Mass., Kelly Jolicoeur of Pittston, Maine, Monique Burchard of Whitinsville, Mass., and Holly Flanagan of Tiverton; a sister, Mary L. Waite of Camden, Maine; a brother, Kenneth T. Sylvia of Tiverton; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral Mass was held Monday, July 29, at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport.
Louise F. Ryan
St. Barnabas communicant, worked as claims adjustor
Louise F. (Hartough) Ryan, 83, of 51 Middle Road, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at St. Clare Home in Newport. She was the husband of the late John J. Ryan.
Born in Philadelphia on August 31, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Frank J. and Louise (Kennedy) Hartough. She worked as a claims adjuster for the former American Mutual Insurance in New Jersey for 22 years before retiring in 1978.
Mrs. Ryan was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church.
She leaves a son, John J. Ryan of Silver Spring, Md.; two daughters, Mary Louise Ryan of Andover, Mass., and Joan Lombardi of Barrington; a sister, Mary Nickel of Port Deposit, Md.; and two granddaughters, Amanda Louise and Marissa Louise Lombardi, both of Barrington.
She was the sister of the late Frank J. Hartough.
Her funeral was held Saturday, July 27 from the Connors Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Barnabas Church. Burial was in Philadelphia.

J. Herbert Davis
Former Tiverton resident; golfer
J. Herbert Davis, 90, of Bay Spring Village, 147 Bay Spring Ave., died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at the Orchard View Nursing Home in East Providence. He was the son of the late John H. and Amy Davis.
Born in West Harwich, Mass., he lived in Barrington with his son John for six months. He had previously resided in Tiverton at Sakonnet Bay Manor.
A graduate of Attleboro High School and the University of Rhode Island, Mr. Davis worked in sales in Ohio, New York and Attleboro. He retired as regional manager and sales representative for St. Regis Paper of Attleboro.
An avid golfer, he was a member of Highland Country Club in Attleboro and Cranberry Valley in Harwich, Mass. He was also a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants.
He leaves two sons, John H. Davis of Barrington and Bruce K. Davis of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a daughter, Dareen A. Davis of West Harwich; three grandchildren and a great-grandson.
A private burial will be conducted in West Harwich at a later date.
Willard Elliot Johnson
World War II vet,
avid sailor
Willard Elliot Johnson, 74, of 87 Colonel Christopher Greene Road, Portsmouth, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at the Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Natalie Johnson.
Born in Worcester, Mass., on Feb. 21,1928, he was the son of the late Edwin P. and the Elsie M. (Moberg) Johnson.
Mr. Johnson worked as an advertising executive in New York City for 36 years. He retired in 1986 as a partner at Spectrum Marketing Inc. He served in the U.S. Army as a corporal during World War II.
Mr. Johnson was a 1950 graduate of Boston University. He enjoyed sailing and was a member of the Ida Lewis Yacht Club. Mr. Johnson followed local and national events and was an active editorial writer.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Lynn Johnson of Norwalk, Conn., and Stacey Holt of Randolph, Mass; and one sister, Carol Bringerud of Plantation, Fla.
His private graveside service will be held at the Swedish Cemetery, Worcester, Mass.

Peter R. Marblo Sr.
World War II veteran, St. Barnabas communicant
Peter R. Marblo Sr., 81, of 20 Indian Ave., Portsmouth, died Friday, July 26, 2002, at home. He was the husband of the late Emily Virginia (Hilgreen) Marblo.
Born March 6, 1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Peter and Alberta (Mielenhausen) Marblo. He worked as a bartender for 25 years at Junior’s Restaurant in Brooklyn.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in World War II, and was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church.
Mr. Marblo leaves a daughter, Virginia Clappi of Portsmouth, and three grandsons.
He was the father of the late Peter R. Marblo Jr., and the brother of the late Amanda Roy, Alberta Unger and Dorothy Giordano.
His funeral will be held Tuesday, July 30 at 9 a.m. from Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.
