Elizabeth H. Phillips
Leaves a son in Barrington
Elizabeth H. Phillips, 90, of Bass River, Mass., died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Presidential Oaks in Concord, N.H. She was the wife of the late Earle G. Phillips.
Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Herbert and Rebecca (Morton) Holway, she was a graduate of Barnstable High School in Hyannis, Mass., and the Swain School of Art in New Bedford. An artist, she designed and hand-painted candles for the Colonial Candle Company in Hyannis; she was a nature lover and enjoyed the ocean.
She leaves a son, Earle G. Phillips Jr. of Barrington; a daughter, Gail Heil of Contoocook, N.H.; four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Wednesday, May 29, in the Federated Church in Hyannis. Burial followed in Bayview Cemetery in Sandwich, Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you give your time and love to the elderly.
Arrangements were by the Bennett Funeral Home in Concord, N.H.
Antone V. Correia
Retired caretaker of Jencks estate
Antone V. Correia, 98, of Barker Avenue died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Grace Barker Nursing Home. He was the husband of Marcia (Nunes) Correia to whom he was married since 1931.
Born in Faial, Açores, he was a son of the late Antone V. and Maria (Andrade) Correia.
Mr. Correia was the caretaker for the Robert Jencks estate in Seekonk for over 40 years before retiring.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, George M. Correia of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Anthony H. Correia of Addison, Vt.; a brother, Alfred V. Correia of Tiverton, and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a brother of the late Joseph, Joaquim and Manuel Correia.
His funeral will be held today, May 29, at 8 a.m. from Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Burial will be in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.
William C. Benn
World War II veteran,
former Bristol resident
William Charles Benn, 81, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Palm Garden of Port St. Lucie. He was the husband of Josephine Benn.
Born in Pawtucket, he lived in Port St. Lucie for 15 years after moving there from Bristol.
He was a project engineer with the U.S. Defense Department in the South Pacific for 35 years prior to his retirement.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 23rd Bomb Squadron during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two clusters, Purple Heart, and Presidential Unit Citation. Mr. Benn was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
He was of the Episcopal faith and was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, the Masonic Lodge in Chicopee Falls, Mass., the Shrine Temple in Honolulu, the VFW in Fort Pierce, Fla., and the American Vets in Bristol.
He leaves a daughter, Cynthia A. Benn-Evans and her husband, Michael, of Palm Springs, Fla.; four sons, William G. Benn and wife Kathleen of Pawtucket, Thomas R. Benn of Lake Worth, Fla., Joseph A. Benn and wife Charlotte of O’Fallen, Ill., and Lee P. Benn and wife Pamela of Bristol, and nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
There will be a memorial service at a later date. Those who wish may contribute to a veterans’ group of their choice in his memory.

Mabel DePalma
Funeral services for Mabel (Lopes) DePalma were held Friday, May 10, from Sansone Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church.
The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Offertory gifts were presented by Mrs. DePalma’s son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Ann DePalma.
Burial followed in North Burial Ground, where Father Ferland read the committal prayers. The eulogist was grandson Kenneth A. Ambrose. Serving as pallbearers were Kenneth A. and Christopher K. Ambrose, Dean J. and Alan A. DePalma, John A. Sicignano and Drew Pansa.
Mrs. DePalma, 83, of 168 Franklin St. died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Desilets Nursing Home in Warren. She was the wife of Anthony "Brush" DePalma.

Gerald E. Souza
Air Force veteran owned J&J Auto Sales
Gerald E. "Jerry" Souza, 73, of Stuart, Fla., died at home on Monday, May 20, 2002. He was the husband of Georgianna J. Souza. They had been married for 51 years.
Born in Fall River, he had lived in Florida for the past 15 years, moving to Stuart from Westport.
Mr. Souza owned and operated J&J Auto Sales & Service in Westport. Previously, he was a materials coordinator for National Airlines.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Souza was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Riverland Boaters Club in Stuart.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Diane K. Souza of Stuart and Patricia A. Sherrard of Palm City, Fla.; a son, Gerald W. Souza of Westport; a sister, Deltha Vieira of Ocala, Fla.; three brothers, Gilbert Souza of Westport, Robert Souza of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and David Souza of Fall River, and six grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were by Forest Hills Funeral Home in Palm City, Fla.
Vincent Carotenuti
Lifelong resident was usher for 51 years at Mount Carmel
Vincent "Jimmy" Carotenuti, 87, of 236 State St. died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at Silver Creek Manor. He was the husband of the late Amelia (Giusti) Carotenuti.
Born in Bristol, a son of the late Anthony and Annelo (Cormandino) Carotenuti, he was a lifelong Bristol resident.
He was a supervisor for 34 years at Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp., formerly in Bristol and Portsmouth. He retired in 1977.
A communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Mr. Carotenuti was an usher for 51 years at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. He belonged to the Kaiser Retirees Club and was a member of the Bristol, Warren and Portsmouth Senior Councils. He was also a former member of the Bristol Knights of Columbus, Council 379.
He leaves two daughters, CarolAnn DeChristofaro and Sandra Rodrigues, both of Bristol; two granddaughters, Juliann Giusti and Rene Rodrigues, both of Bristol; two grandsons, James J. and Jason M. Carotenuti of Bristol; and three great-grandchildren, Victoria Suits and Courtney and James J. Carotenuti Jr., all of Bristol.
He was also the brother of the late Anthony Carotenuti.
Funeral services are from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., at 9 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, State Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bristol Fire dept., Dreadnaught Ladder Company, P.O. Box 775, Bristol, RI 02809.
Robert H. Rose

Robert H. Rose, 67, of Exeter, died Sunday, June 16, 2002 at home. He was the husband of Wanda D. (Jackson) Rose.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Henry and Eleanor (Cairnes) Rose, he had lived in Barrington before moving to Exeter seven years ago.
Mr. Rose was vice president of quality control at Carol Wire and Cable, now General Cable, for 30 years before retiring in 1995. He was an Air Force vteran of the Korean War. An avid golfer, Mr. Rose was a member of the Navy Golf League at Davisville and the Sencesca Golf League of Southern Rhode Island.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Phyllis D. Fish of South Kingstown, Tracy Morrissey of Huntington Beach, Calif. and Leslie Rose-Dethloff of Newport Beach, Calif.; a son, Robert S. Rose of Brick, N.J.; a sister, Henriette M. Nelson of Warwick; a brother, Raymond F. Rose of Barrington; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday, June 20, in the Carpenter-Jenks Quaker Lane Chapel in West Warwick. Burial with military honors followed in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.

Carmelia "Emily" Fontaine-Parent, 85, formerly of 3 Greenlawn St., died Wednesday, June 19, 2002, at Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, Colo. She was the wife of the late C. Philip Fontaine and the late Roland Parent.
Born in Bristol, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Anne (D’Ambrosio) Nappi. She lived in Warren for 64 years, previously living in Bristol.
Mrs. Fontaine-Parent was the owner of the former Fontaine’s Launderette in Warren for 10 years. She had also worked for Jerry Chemist in Cranston for 15 years, and at Crown Fastener Co. in Warren for 10 years.
She leaves two sons, C. Philip Fontaine Jr. of Providence and Ernest J. Fontaine of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two daughters, Mary Ann Rodrigues of Golden, Colo., and Dr. Francine E. Brown of Attleboro, Mass. She was the mother of the late Louella A. Philips and sister of the late Vincent, Anthony and Andrew Nappi, Thomasina Bouffard and Lucy Lombardo.
Her funeral was on Monday, June 24, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Jean Baptiste Church, Warren. She was buried in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery.
Joseph A. Goulart Sr.
Owned Franlart Farm
Joseph A. Goulart Sr., 77, of Willow Avenue, Little Compton, died on Thursday, June 20, 2002, at home. He was the husband of F. Lorraine (Rogers) Goulart.
Born in Little Compton, Mr. Goulart was the son of the late Frank and Mary (Roy) Goulart. He was a lifelong resident of Little Compton and a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church.
A 1942 graduate of J. F. Wilbur High School in Little Compton, Mr. Goulart worked as a grounds crew member at Acoaxet Golf Course in Westport and at Franlart Nursery in Little Compton. He was also the co-owner and operator of Franlart Farm and worked as a self-employed dairy farmer.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Joseph A. Goulart Jr. of Marstons Mills, Mass.; six daughters, Marie F. Gagnon and Catherine G. Allder, both of Little Compton, Ann E. Breen of East Freetown, Mass., Margaret M. Tarvis of Westport, Dorothy Goulart of Randolph, Mass., and Joan G. Turner of Gainesville, Fla.; four sisters, Marie Medeiros, Helen Tavaris, Evelyn Million and Martha Navarro; two brothers, John and George Goulart; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.He was the brother of the late Francis and Thomas Goulart.
His funeral was held Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church.
Edmie P. Bibeau Jr.
Former Westport High School teacher, veteran
Edmie P. Bibeau Jr., 74, of Main Road died Thursday, June 20, 2002, at Massachusetts General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Muriel C. (Collins) Bibeau.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Edmie P. Bibeau Sr. and Jeannette (Theriault) Bibeau, he lived in Westport for most of his life.
He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church. He received a bachelor’s degree from Providence College in 1952 and a master’s degree in education from Bridgewater State College in 1960.
He was employed for 37 years as a high school teacher and administrator by the Westport School Department. He also was athletic director, baseball and basketball coach at various periods of his employment there.
Mr. Bibeau was a World War II Army veteran. He was vice president of the Southeastern Shellfish Association of Westport and was deputy shellfish warden for this town.
He was a former member of the American Legion and Ducks Unlimited, Bristol County chapter.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Bradford R. Bibeau of Westport; a daughter, Lisa J. Bibeau-Chace of Westport; two sisters, Jeanne Ouellette of Westport and Germaine Elhilow of Somerset; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Dolores Charron.
Arrangements are by the Potter Funeral Home, Westport.
Lynne Taunton

Lynne Taunton, 46, of Fall River died Sunday, June 16, at St. Anne’s Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Bruce Taunton.
Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of Albertine (Croteau) Caron of Portsmouth and the late Ernest Caron.
She and her late husband had owned the former Barnacle B’s sandwich shop in Bristol. She and her husband were involved with the Mustang athletic team, where she was a cheerleader and secretary for more than 10 years.
She leaves two children, Joseph and Rebecca Taunton of Bristol; two sisters, Louise Borden of Portsmouth and Diane Richard of Coventry, and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service was held Saturday, June 22, at South Cemetery in Warren. Arrangements were handled by Boule Funeral Home in Fall River.
