Virginia B. Humphrey
Former resident was an avid sailor
Virginia B. Humphrey, 92, of East Providence, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at the Hattie Ide Chaffee Nursing Home in East Providence. She was the wife of the late Wallace "Bud" Humphrey.
Born in Portland, Maine, a daughter of the late Claude and Elizabeth (Baker) Berry, she was a former Barrington and Bristol resident, moving to East Providence five years ago. She was a winter resident of North Palm Beach, Fla.
A graduate of the University of Maine, she was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Barrington, an avid sailor and bridge player. She was a former member of the East Greenwich and Barrington yacht clubs, Rhode Island Country Club, Agawam Hunt and the Rhode Island Bridge Club.
She leaves a daughter, Claudia H. Scott of Barrington; a son-in-law, Parker Scott of Barrington; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. today, Monday, Dec. 23, in St. John’s Episcopal Church, 191 County Road, Barrington. Burial will follow in the Forest Chapel Cemetery in Barrington.
Victoria R. Osterholm
Leaves family in Barrington
Victoria R. Osterholm, 82, of Warren, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at South County Nursing Home in South Kingston. She was the former wife of the late Albert E. Osterholm.
Born in Pottsville, Pa., the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Micholski, she lived in Warren for 20 years and also lived in Cranston, Foster and Johnston.
Mrs. Osterholm worked as a nurse’s aide for the general hospital at the Rhode Island Institutes of Mental Health in Cranston for 20 years, retiring in 1982.
While in Foster, she lived on a farm, a life she thoroughly enjoyed.
She leaves two daughters, Ellen V. Holder of Barrington and Narragansett and Laura K. Bedard of Cape Coral, Fla.; a son, Mathias L. "Buzzy" Osterholm of Foxboro, Mass.; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Albert E. Osterholm Jr.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 20, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Mary of the Bay Church, Warren. Burial followed in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.
Joseph W. Cummings, Jr.
World War veteran was a former resident
Joseph W. Cummings Jr., 80, of Fall River died Thursday, May 30, 2002, at Adams House in Fall River after a brief illness. He was the husband of Louise (Ashworth) Cummings; they were married for 53 years.
Born in Fall River, a son of the late Joseph W. Cummings and the late Ethel (Hudner) Cummings, Sr., he lived in Fall River during his youth. A summer resident of Westport Harbor, he also lived in Saco, Maine, for 18 years, Darien, Conn., for 20 years and Bristol for 15 years. He returned to Fall River in 2002.
Mr. Cummings attended Highland Grammar School and James Madison Morton Jr. High School in Fall River. He graduated from Providence Country Day School in 1940 and was a 1944 graduate of Harvard College.
A first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, he was a liaison pilot in the European Theater of Operations during World War II.
Following his return from duty, he joined the Pepperell Manufacturing Co. in Biddeford, Maine, for a number of years. He then became vice president of merchandising for Vellux Blanket Division of West Point Pepperell Manufacturing Co. with offices in New York City. He retired in 1984 after more than 35 years with the company.
Mr. Cummings was a member of the Acoaxet Golf Club and Elephant Rock Beach Club in Westport Harbor. He and his wife enjoyed traveling around the world and particularly their vacations with family in Bermuda.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, J. William Cummings, III, and his wife, Claudia of Fairfield, Conn., and George A. Cummings and his wife, Veronica, of Cockeysville, Md.; four brothers, John W. Cummings of Fall River, Richard H. Cummings of Dartmouth, Mass., Charles R. Cummings of Brattleboro, Vt., and David Cummings of Westport Harbor, and four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral was held on Monday, June 3, from the ‘Cherry Place’ Home of Waring Sullivan in Fall River, followed by a funeral Mass at Holy Name Church in Fall River. Burial was at Beech Grove Cemetery in Westport.

Christine E. Huss

Christine E. (Caufield) Huss, 80, of Quaker Manor, Portsmouth, formerly of Old Ford Road, Newport, died Friday, May 31, 2002, at Village House, Newport. She was the wife of the late Douglas P. Huss.
Born on Denison Street in Newport, she was a daughter of the late Daniel T. and Margaret (McCarthy) Caufield.
Mrs. Huss worked at the Torpedo Station on Goat Island, Newport, during World War II. She had also worked for then-Mayor McCauley as a secretary after graduating from Rogers High School in 1940. She was a homemaker and a seamstress.
She was a member of St. Anthony Church and the Portsmouth Senior Center.
She leaves four daughters, the Rev. Dorothy M. Huss Ward of Newport, M. Ellen Milligan of Snellville, Ga., Christine M. Laurin of Portsmouth, and Marie D. Gallagher of North Berwick, Maine; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Ellen Sullivan and Dorothy Caufield.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at St. Anthony Church. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.
Clinton L. Pendleton

World War II veteran
Clinton L. Pendleton, 81, of Berwick, Maine, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002. He was the husband for 62 years of Eileen (Briggs) Pendleton.
He was born in Bristol, a twin son of Charles L. and Mary (MacLeod) Pendleton. He attended Bristol schools.
He was a World War II veteran with the First Marine Division from Guadalcanal to Tiensin, China.
He was manager of safety services for New England Electric Companies before retiring after 35 years.
Mr. Pendleton was a district commissioner of the Old Colony Council, B.S.A. and holder of the Silver Beaver Award. He was a watercolor artist for more than 60 years, a member of several art associations and taught watercolor paintings to seniors in the South Berwick area. He was a member of the First Parish Federated Church of South Berwick.
He leaves three sons, Harry Pendleton of King George, Va., Richard Pendleton of Braintree, Mass., and Thomas Pendleton of Castleton, Va.; a brother, George Pendleton of Fitchburg, Mass., six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 15, at the First Parish Federated, Main Street, South Berwick, Maine. Arrangements are being made by McIntire-McCooey Funeral Home, 301 Main St., South Berwick, ME 03908.

Elizabeth Ann Lyons RSM, 77, of Cumberland, formerly Sister Mary de la Salle, died Wednesday, May 29, 2002, at Mount St. Rita Health Centre in North Providence.
Born in Providence on June 25, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Richard and Delia (McDonough) Lyons.
She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Sept. 8, 1944, and professed her perpetual vows on Aug. 16, 1950.
She taught at the following schools: St. Patrick, St. Anthony, St. Xavier Academy and Holy Ghost schools in Providence; St. Teresa School, Woodlawn Catholic Regional in Pawtucket; Mercymount School in Cumberland; St. Philip School in Greenville and Mary V. Quirk Junior High School for 10 years and Warren High School, Warren. In 1998, after her retirement, she was a volunteer worker.
She leaves a sister, Eleanor Lord of Ocala, Fla. She was a sister of the late Rev. Leo Lyons SSC and Richard Lyons.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held from Mount St. Rita Health Centre Chapel. Burial followed in Ressurection Cemetery.
David A. Hedly

David A. Hedly, 37, of Downey Avenue, South Daytona Beach, Fla., died Friday, May 24, 2002, in Daytona Beach.
Born in Providence, he was the son of Atwell "Ben" and Elizabeth (Hutchison) Hedly, both of Barrington. He lived in Swansea, Mass., before moving to Florida five years ago.
Mr. Hedly was a self-employed carpenter specializing in fine woodwork.
Besides his parents, he leaves a son, Lucas Hedly of South Daytona Beach; a brother, Jeffrey W. Hedly of Somerset, Mass., and a grandmother, Isabelle Hedly of Portsmouth.
A service for Mr. Hedly was on Monday, June 3, in Friends Church in Portsmouth. He was buried in The Friends cemetery, Portsmouth.

Doris E. Sinclair

Doris E. Sinclair, 78, died on Sunday, March 17, 2002, at home in Sarasota, Fla.
She was a daughter of the late Harold T. and Lillis Read Sinclair and had lived in Warren most of her life.
She retried from a 42-year career as a public health nurse with the Visiting Nurses Association. She was educated in Warren schools, the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing and Simmons College.
She leaves two half-sisters, Dorothea Rockey of East Hampton, Mass., and Barbara Thayer of Fort Myers, Fla.; three nieces, Carol Knapp of Chatham, Mass., Virginia Sinclair of Alameda, Calif. and Mary E. Sinclair of Asheville, N.C.; one nephew, Alan Sinclair of Berwick, Md., and several grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at St. Andrews United Church of Christ in Sarasota. Burial will take place at St. Thomas Cemetery in Swansea at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Southwest Florida, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, Fla. 34238.
Edward J. Heyman
Was a Confectionery
Hall of Fame member
Edward J. Heyman, 76, of Tiffany Circle and St. Petersburg, Fla., died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of Barbara S. (Skoogland) Heyman; they had been married for 49 years.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Adolph & Blanche (Boissey) Heyman, he was a wholesale confectionery broker with Heyman & O’Gara in Boston and Dedham for 35 years. Later, he founded Heyman and Associates, which he was operating at the time of his death.
Mr. Heyman was the former secretary of the Boston Confectionery Sales Club and a member of the National Confectionery Sales Club. He was elected into the Confectionery Hall of Fame in Hershey, Pa. in 1986. A 1950 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, he was a Navy veteran of World War II and Korea. He was an avid golfer and dog lover.
Because of Mr. Heyman’s business, Halloween was always a special event at his home, and many neighborhood children new him as "Mr. Ed."
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Robert E. Heyman of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Kurt J. Heyman of Orlando; a sister, Mildred H. O’Gara of Narragansett; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 1, from the Smith-Mason Funeral Home in Riverside, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Luke’s Church. Burial followed in the Forest Chapel Cemetery in Barrington.
Richard G. Pineau
Raytheon employee
for 35 years
Richard G. Pineau, 61, of Eaton Street, Fall River, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Linda L. (Hunt) Pineau, and the former husband of the late Catherine M. Pineau.
Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Gerard and Imelda (Richard) Pineau. He was a lifelong Fall River resident.
Mr. Pineau was a production specialist for Raytheon in Portsmouth for 35 years.
He was a lifetime member of the Sakonnet Sportsmen’s Club in Tiverton. He was an avid fisherman.
Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Catherine and Sandra Pineau, both of Fall River, and Patricia Laroche of Swansea; two sons, Michael J. Pineau of New Hampshire and Carlton Pineau of Fall River; a brother, Gerald Pineau of Tiverton; two sisters, Cecile Pimental of Somerset, Mass., and Lorraine Pineau of Minnesota, and 11 grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
His funeral was on Sunday, May 26, at Auclair Funeral Home in Fall River, followed by cremation.
