Lavina Josephine (Phillips) Costa, 90, of 1324 Hope St., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Grace Barker Nursing Center in Warren. She was the wife of the late Arthur F. Costa.
Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Mary (Santos) Phillips. Mrs. Costa was a homemaker.
She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Church.
She leaves two daughters, Janet L. Falotico of Bristol and Clarisse J. Caroselli of Fall River; five grandchildren, Gina Sieber of Greenfield, Mass., Nicholas DelSanto of Norton, Mass., Christopher and Todd DelSanto of Bristol, and Nino Caroselli of Fall River; and four great grandchildren, Casey and Ryan Sieber of Greenfield, Mass. and Marissa and Brianna DelSanto of Norton, Mass.
She was also the sister of the late Manuel "Chief" Phillips, Margaret Esteves, Dorothy Azza and Mary Bulinski.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Mary Vargas Grieve
Retired DOH secretary
Mary (Cabral) Vargas Grieve, 78, of 5 Hawthorne Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Archibald A. Grieve and the late Frank A. Vargas.
Born in Santa Barbara, Calif., the daughter of the late John and Christina (Sousa) Cabral, she lived in Portsmouth for 50 years before moving to Bristol.
Mrs. Grieve was a secretary for the state Department of Health and a cashier for the former First National Store of Bristol.
She leaves a son, Frank Michael Vargas of Bristol; a daughter, Kristine Harris of Warren; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was also the mother of the late Judy Pimental.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, Dec. 27, at 9 a.m. from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Metacom Ave., Warren, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
Robert H. Cochrane
Leaves a son in Bristol
Robert Hall Cochrane, 83, of Jacksonville, Fla. and formerly of Barrington, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Virginia (Burleigh) Cochrane; they had been married for 61 years.
Born in Barrington, Mr. Cochrane was a son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Cochrane. He was a member of Ortega Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville and the BPOE Jacksonville Lodge 221.
Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Bruce Cochrane of Bristol, Richard Cochrane of East Providence, Robert Cochrane of Falmouth, Mass., and Brian Cochrane of Crystal River, Fla.; a daughter, Marcia Cochrane Hahn of Jacksonville, and 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, March 10 at 2 p.m. in Ortega Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private.
Hilda Goff
Retired cook, lived in Warren most her life
Hilda Goff, 75, of 56 Kickemuit Road died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at the home of her daughter, Paula Davis. She was the wife of the late Carl Goff.
Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late John and Virginia Medeiros (Moniz) Alves. She was a resident of Warren for most of her life.
Mrs. Goff was a former cook at the Liberty Street School. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She leaves a son, George Beaudry Jr. of Fall River; four daughters, Anne Dunlap of Plymouth, Mass., Cynthia Thorpe and Paula Davis, both of Warren, and Barbara Hagan of Tiverton; eight sisters, Mary A. Ringuete, Gloria Abrante and Claire Monis, all of Fall River, Irene Arruda of Westport, Dorothy M. Laughlin and Peg Silveira, both of Middletown, Anne Simmons of Portsmouth and Rose Smith of Newport; three brothers, John C. Alves of Fall River, Frank Alves of Wildwood, Fla., and John Soares of Jacksonville, Fla., and 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Theresa Ballard Skelton and Manuel Alves. She was the mother of the late James Beaudry.
Her funeral was held Friday, March 1. Arrangements were by Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home. Cremation followed.
Elizabeth Carvara
Homemaker was born in Bristol, leaves family here
Elizabeth (Barboza) Carvara, 81, formerly of Highview Avenue, Warren, died Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Evergreen House Health Center in East Providence. She was the wife of the late Jesse S. Carvara.
Born in Bristol, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Enos) Barboza. She had lived in Warren most of her life after moving from Bristol.
Mrs. Carvara was a homemaker. She worked for a time in the factories of former Crown Fastener and R&J Manufacturing in Warren. a
She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Warren.
She leaves three sons, Jesse Carvara of Riverside, Peter J. Carvara of Overland Park, Kan., and Steven Carvara of Newport; a daughter, Elizabeth "Betty Ann" Cassiere of Riverside; a brother, Peter Barboza of Bristol; four sisters, Adeline Travers, Ethel Marshall and Genvieve Rodrigues, all of Bristol, and May Zinni of Apache Junction, Ariz., and 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Robert Carvara and a sister of the late Angelina Soucy.
Her funeral was held yesterday, March 6, from the William J. Smith and Son Funeral Home in Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Thomas the Apostle Church.
Jacquim Pimental
Born in Bristol, Korean War veteran
Jacquim "Jack" Pimental, 72, of 102 Constitution St. died Friday, March 1, 2002, at the Rhode Island Veterans’ Home on Metacom Avenue. He was the husband of Dolores (Correia) Pimental.
Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late Louis and Maria Hortense (Silvia) Pimental.
Mr. Pimental was a floor man for 15 years at Davol Rubber in Cranston, retiring in 1971. He previously worked at Lloyd Manufacturing in Warren.
Mr. Pimental was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church and enjoyed woodworking.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Patricia A. Melki of Grottoes, Va., and Shirley A. Almeida of Bristol; four granddaughters, Sandra and Tara Melki of Grottoes and Stephanie and Debra Almeida of Bristol; and two grandsons, Peter Melki of Grottoes and Jeffrey Almeida of Bristol.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 5, from Sansone Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church. Burial with military honors followed in the Rhode Island Veterans’ Cemetery in Exeter.
Jesse A. St. Ours
Funeral services for Jesse A. St. Ours were held Friday March 1, from Sansone Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church. The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Rachel M. Miranda and Emily Eastwood were the readers. Emily Eastwood and Linda St. Ours presented the offertory gifts.
Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Father Ferland read the committal prayers. Serving as pallbearers were Manuel Reis, John F. Miranda, Paul Ferreira, John C. Ferreira, Michael Moran, Michael P. Carbone Jr., John M. Almeida and Paul S. Mello. The faculty, staff and students of Jesse’s eighth-grade class at Kickemuit Middle School served as honorary bearers.
Jesse, 15, of Warren died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence. He was the son of William E. St. Ours Jr. and the late Renee St. Ours.
Jose M. Pimenta
Funeral services for Jose M. Pimenta were held Friday, March 1, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church. The Rev. Fernando Cabral was the celebrant of the Mass. Maria Anjos Raposo was the reader, and gifts were presented by Jonathan Ferreira, Justin Ferreira and Sandra Rupkey.
Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Father Cabral offered committal prayers. Serving as pallbearers were Jonathan Ferreira, Tony Pimenta, Louis Cabral, Tony Pacheco, Frank Frias and Paul Frias.
Mr. Pimenta, 46, of Wood Street died Monday, Feb. 25, 2002, at home.
Francis E. Hamabe
Accomplished artist, World War II veteran
Francis E. Hamabe, 84, of 145 Windward Lane died Saturday, March 2, 2002, in Bristol. He was the husband of Phyllis (Green) Hamabe.
A native of New Jersey, he was the son of the late Frank and Emma (Tiedemann) Hamabe and husband of the late Sydney (Gardner) Hamabe. He attended Newark School of Art and Rhode Island School of Design. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in both Europe and the Pacific.
Mr. Hamabe was a co-founder of Maine Coast Artists after moving to Rockport, Maine. He was the art director for Maine’s first television station and taught art at Blue Hill Consolidated School.
His work has appeared in the New Yorker, Down East and Maine Life magazines. His work is popular among collectors and includes silkscreening, collage, oil paintings and watercolors. In May, 1996, he was honored by the University of Maine-Machias with an honorary doctor of fine arts degree.
Mr. Hamabe was a member of the Blue Hill Country Club, Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club, and Maine Coast Artists. He was a communicant of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Barrington.
A memorial service is at 12:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 191 County Road, Barrington. A memorial will take place in Blue Hill, Maine, at a later date.

Mary R. Escobar
Longtime Portsmouth resident
Mary R. (Gomes) Escobar, 96, of 141 Middle Road, Portsmouth, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at home. She was the wife of the late Antone R. Escobar.
Born in Middletown on Aug. 2, 1906, Mrs. Escobar was a daughter of the late James and Mary (Mott) Gomes. She was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church and a member of the St. Barnabas Church Women’s Guild.
She leaves three daughters, Mary E. Silveira and Josephine E. Vierra, both of Portsmouth, and Sadie Mott of Fishers, Ind.; three sons, Antone Escobar of Yorba Linda, Calif., and Louis and Manuel Escobar, both of Portsmouth; four sisters, Sadie Souza of Bowie, Md., Josephine Silvia and Evelyn Fernandes, both of Middletown, and Gertrude Narcizo of Sandusky, Ohio; a brother, Louis J. Gomes of Middletown; and 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late James, John and Frank Gomes, Elizabeth Lacerda and Anne B. Silvia.
Her funeral will be held Friday, Dec. 27 at 9 a.m. from the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.

John B. Custodio Jr.
Former weaver, World War II vet
John B. Custodio Jr., 84, of 126 Hilton St., Tiverton, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Silver Creek Manor Nursing Home in Bristol.
Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late John B. Custodio Sr. and Liduina (Texeira) Custodio. He was a resident of Tiverton for most of his life.
Mr. Custodio was a weaver at the former Bourne Mill before entering the military. An Army veteran of World War II, he participated in the Battle of New Georgia in June 1943. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart.
Mr. Custodio was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 486, Fall River. He was a communicant of Holy Ghost Church, Tiverton.
He leaves two sisters, Gilda Correia and Evelyn Morris, both of Tiverton; a brother, Antone Custodio of Fall River; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was the brother of the late Edward Custodio.
His funeral was held Monday, Dec. 23 from Oliveira Funeral Home in Fall River, with a Mass of Christian Burial in Holy Ghost Church. Burial was in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.
Wilson Silva Rego
Funeral services in Thanksgiving for the life of Wilson Silva Rego were held on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in the Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven, Mass. The Reverend Canon John Van Siclen officiated at the services. Readers for the services were Mr. Rego’s grandchildren Erin E. Rego and William M. Moger.
Burial with military honors followed, where Mr. Rego’s grandson William M. Rego played Taps.
The Patriot Honor Guard from Hanscom Air Force Base presented the flag to Mr. Rego’s daughter, Nancy G. R. Moger, on behalf of the family.
Mr. Rego, 86, the husband of the late Grace (McLeod) Rego, formerly of Tiverton, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002 at the home of his daughter Nancy.
