Elton C. Herrick
Lived here 30 years
Elton C. Herrick, 80, previously of Narragansett Avenue, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the United Methodist Health Care Center in East Providence. He was the husband of Joyce (Rawlinson) Herrick.
Born in Palmer, Mass., a son of the late Elton I and Helen (Duguay) Herrick, he lived in Barrington for 30 years, and also Warwick, before moving to East Providence a year and a half ago.
Mr. Herrick was a letter carrier in Barrington for 23 years, working out of the United States Post Office on Middle Highway. He retired in 1983.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Herrick was a life member of the VFW Primmer-Cordoro Lodge and the American Legion post 35 in Warwick. He was an avid boater and fisherman, and graduated from the Lee Institute of Real Estate in Providence. He was a member of the Seekonk Congregational Church.
Besides his wife he leaves a son, Bruce F. Herrick of Warwick; a daughter, Melissa E. Barker of Grottoes, Va.; two sisters, Lillian Smith and Helen Michoud, both of Ormand Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Ruth Perreault and Margaret Peterson.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, in Seekonk Congregational church, 600 Fall River Ave., Seekonk. Burial will be private.
Arrangements were made by the Cremation Society of Rhode Island.
Ethel Digioia
Leaves a son here
Ethel Digioia, 82, of Warren, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Cranston. She was the wife of the late Frank Digioia.
Born in South Barre, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Verna (Brigandi) Sottile. She lived in Warren for 74 years.
Mrs. Digioia was a machine operator for Taylor Box in Warren for several years before retiring.
She was a communicant of St. Alexander’s Church in Warren.
She leaves a son, Frank Digioia of Bristol; two daughters, Verna Vittorioso of Cranston and Frances McNeil of Rochester, N.H.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Alexander’s Church in Warren. Burial followed in St. Alexander’s Cemetery.
Alice Arruda
Lifelong Bristol resident, school cafeteria worker
Alice (Freitas) Arruda, 95, of 74 Greylock Road, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Silver Creek Manor on Creek Lane. She was the wife of the late August Arruda Sr.
Born in Bristol, a daughter of the late Everisto deSousa and Lucinda Augusta (Rego) Freitas, she was a lifelong resident.
She worked for 15 years as a cafeteria worker in the state of Rhode Island’s School Lunch Program at several Bristol public schools before retiring in 1972. She had previously worked at the former Collins and Aikman, Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. and Bristol Manufacturing Company.
Mrs. Arruda was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church.
She leaves a son, August Arruda Jr. of Bristol; two granddaughters, Deborah and Valerie Arruda, both of Bristol; and two sisters, Maria Evelina Carreiro and Gilberta Rego Sousa, both of Bristol.
She was also the sister of the late Jose deSousa Freitas and Elzira Anselmo.
Her funeral services will be from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Friday, Dec. 27, at 8 a.m., with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Wood Street.
Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Visiting hours are Thursday, Dec. 26, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
Lavina Josephine Costa
Lifelong Bristol resident

Lavina Josephine (Phillips) Costa, 90, of 1324 Hope St., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Grace Barker Nursing Center in Warren. She was the wife of the late Arthur F. Costa.
Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was the daughter of the late Manuel and Mary (Santos) Phillips. Mrs. Costa was a homemaker.
She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Church.
She leaves two daughters, Janet L. Falotico of Bristol and Clarisse J. Caroselli of Fall River; five grandchildren, Gina Sieber of Greenfield, Mass., Nicholas DelSanto of Norton, Mass., Christopher and Todd DelSanto of Bristol, and Nino Caroselli of Fall River; and four great grandchildren, Casey and Ryan Sieber of Greenfield, Mass. and Marissa and Brianna DelSanto of Norton, Mass.
She was also the sister of the late Manuel "Chief" Phillips, Margaret Esteves, Dorothy Azza and Mary Bulinski.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Antonetta Pompeii
Born in Bristol
Antonetta (Ruggieri) Pompeii, 87, of Cranston and formerly of Barrington, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Morgan Health Center in Johnston. She was the wife of Louis Pompeii.
Born in Bristol, a daughter of the late Carmine and Maria (Viafiore) Ruggieri, she had lived in Barrington for 50 years before moving to Cranton seven years ago.
Mrs. Pompeii worked for the state Department of Education as a supervisor for its lunch program for 28 years, retiring in 1980. She was a culinary-arts enthusiast, and enjoyed traveling.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Chris Pompeii of Cranston; a sister, Ruth Romano of Plainfield, Conn.; two granddaughters, a grandson and three great-grandchildren. She was a sister of the late John and Frank Ruggieri.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 24, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial in Holy Angels Church, Barrington. Burial followed in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence.
Florence Vieira
Lifelong Bristol resident, Mount Carmel communicant
Florence (Massa) Vieira, 87, of 30 Ansonia Ave., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at her home following a long illness. She was the wife of the late John "Franklin" Vieira.
Born in Bristol and a lifelong resident, she was the daughter of the late Biagia and Teresina (Ambrosia) Massa. She was a homemaker.
Mrs. Vieira was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and a member of the Rosary and Altar Society and the Nocturnal Adoration Society.
She leaves a daughter, Florence A. Vieira of Bristol; a grandson, A. John Almeida of South Miami Beach, Fla.; two sisters, Palmera Alves and Theresa Cardoza, both of Bristol; and two brothers, Angelo "Chet" Massa of Mashapee, Mass. and Edmund "Hector" Massa of Bristol.
She was also the sister of the late Biagino, Nicholas, Salvatore and Joseph Massa, Anna Esposito and Josephine Vescera.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial Tuesday, Dec. 24, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 9 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Edward A. Russo
Funeral services were held for Edward A. Russo on Friday, Dec. 14, 2002, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Church. The Rev. Barry J. Gamache was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Readers for the Mass were Mr. Russo’s granddaughters Carrie Ann Lopes and Christine Aguiar. Offertory gifts were presented by granddaughters Ms. Lopes, Ms. Aguiar and Kimbley Gendreau.
Burial with military honors followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery where Father Gamache read the committal prayers.
Chris Russo, Scott J. Aguiar, Jason A. Lopes, Steven M. Stanzione, Ernest Bucci, David J. Corey, Raymond C. Holt and Raymond L. Duarte served as pallbearers.
Mr. Russo, 79, the husband of Jennie B. (Bucci) Russo of 1080 Hope Street, died Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.
Constantino A. Vasconcellos
World War II veteran, foreman at Fulflex factory
Constantino (Connie) A. Vasconcellos, 79, of Mount Hope Avenue, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Rhode Island Veterans’ Home. He was the husband of Mary Isabel (Pacheco) Vasconcellos.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Ernest and Mary Isabel (Cabral) Vasconcellos. He lived in Bristol for 56 years since moving from Somerset where he lived for the previous 23 years.
Mr. Vasconcellos was a foreman at Carr Fulflex for 38 years before retiring in 1984.
He served in the Air Force during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign.
Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Eileen Emery of Tewksbury, Mass., and Paula Wolfang of Warren; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
He was the brother of the late John and Antone Vasconcellos.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 18, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church. The celebrant of the Mass was the Rev. Thomas J. Ferland. The con-celebrant was the Rev. Joseph D. Santos Jr. Readers for the Mass were Joseph Morenzi and Zane Wolfang. Gifts were presented by Judy Brantner, Lea Viveiros and Jerry Vasconcellos.
Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery where the Rev. Santos offered the committal prayers. Arthur Nunes, Kenneth Emery, Gary Wolfang, John Vasconcellos, Steve Vasconcellos and Bobby Blakely served as pallbearers.

Mary Vargas Grieve
Retired DOH secretary
Mary (Cabral) Vargas Grieve, 78, of 5 Hawthorne Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 22, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Archibald A. Grieve and the late Frank A. Vargas.
Born in Santa Barbara, Calif., the daughter of the late John and Christina (Sousa) Cabral, she lived in Portsmouth for 50 years before moving to Bristol.
Mrs. Grieve was a secretary for the state Department of Health and a cashier for the former First National Store of Bristol.
She leaves a son, Frank Michael Vargas of Bristol; a daughter, Kristine Harris of Warren; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was also the mother of the late Judy Pimental.
Her funeral will be held on Friday, Dec. 27, at 9 a.m. from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Metacom Ave., Warren, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.
Antonio Cordeiro Arruda
Born in the Açores, leaves family in town
Antonio Cordeiro Arruda, 84, of Third School Street, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Maria C. (Carvalho) Arruda.
Born in Santa Barbara, Açores, he was the son of the late Manuel and Maria daGloria Cordeiro Arruda. He lived in Bristol since moving from the Açores where he lived the previous 69 years.
He was a landscaper and also worked for Magic Carpet for two years before retiring in 1990.
He leaves four daughters, Zelia deAlmeida and Conceicao Arruda of Bristol, Maria Fatima deCamara of Santa Barbara, Açores and Maria Arruda Romero of Fall River; and seven grandchildren, Sharon deAlmeida, Luis Albert deCamara, Mario deAlmeida Jr., Shawn G. deAlmeida, Marco Antonio deCamara, Alex Arruda Romero Jr., and Tiago deCamara.
He was the father of the late Maria Lourdes and the brother of the late Manuel and Jose Arruda, Maria Barreiro, Idelia daCosta, Virginia and Alexandrenha Arruda.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Elizabeth Church. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
