Mary ‘Molly’ O’Grady
Centenarian; born in Ireland

Mary "Molly" (Judge) O’Grady, 100, of Bay Spring Village in Barrington and formerly of Walnut Road, Barrington, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at the Evergreen House Health Center in East Providence, just days shy of her 101st birthday. She was the wife of the late Patrick "Pete" O’Grady.

Born in County Roscommon, Ireland, a daughter of the late Frank and Ann (Reynolds) Judge, she had lived in Barrington for many years.

Mrs. O’Grady came to the United States as a teenager, leaving against the wishes of her parents, who eked out a modest living farming. The United States, she said at a 100th birthday party held for her last year at Bay Spring Village, held more promise than her homeland.

"There was really nothing there for us," she said. "There was no work, so I came."

Once here, she began working as a nanny, and spent years tending to large, wealthy Providence families. She met her husband Patrick during an Irish dance on Providence’s Smith Hill, and they eventually settled in Barrington.

He worked as the greenskeeper at Rhode Island Country Club, and she continued to work as a nanny and then, later, as a lace worker at the former Rhode Island Lace Works on Bay Spring Avenue.

A devout Catholic, Mrs. O’Grady was instrumental in making St. Luke’s Church in Barrington an official parish; before the petition drive she began in the early 1940s, it had only been recognized as a missionary, or part time, parish by the Diocese of Providence. Her work was rewarded several years ago, when she was asked to help shovel the first bit of dirt when the church started its renovation and expansion project. At her 100th birthday party last year, she even received calls from Bishops Louis Gelineau and Robert Mulvee.

Mrs. O’Grady was a former senior representative to the Barrington Town Council and a member of the Barrington Senior Center. At last year’s party, she reflected back on her years in town. She didn’t regret leaving Ireland as a young woman, she said, and managed to make a family and a life that, though long, was never short on happiness.

"It has been a good life," she said.

Mrs. O’Grady leaves two daughters, Ann M. O’Brien of Barrington and Paddy Coffey of Warren; seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Eileen McGinn and sister of the late Peter, John, Michael and James Judge, Margaret Mahar and Theresa Higgins.

Funeral services will held today, Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 9 a.m. from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Luke’s Church. Burial will follow in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Luke’s Church Building Fund, 108 Washington Road, Barrington, R.I. 02806, or to the Carmelite Monastery, 25 Watson Ave., Barrington, R.I. 02806.
