Lucinda Sousa
Retired stitcher, leaves sister in Warren
Lucinda Sousa of Hope Street, Bristol, died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at Evergreen House, East Providence. She was the wife of the late Manuel Sousa.
Born in Bristol, she was a daughter of the late Joseph F. and Virginia (Silvia) Toste. She was a lifelong Bristol resident.
Mrs. Sousa was a stitcher for Miner Industries for 40 years, retiring in 1983.
She was a member of the Holy Rosary Sodality of St. Elizabeth church in Bristol.
She leaves a son, Manuel Charles Sousa of Bristol; a brother, George F. Toste of Barrington; and four sisters, Virginia Chauvin of Warren, Guihmar Dias of Fall River, and Helen August and Sarah T. Amaral, both of Bristol. She was a sister of the late Joseph and John Toste and Theodore August.
Her funeral will be on Thursday, Oct. 17, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., Bristol, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Elizabeth Church, 577 Wood St. She will be buried in St. Mary Cemetery in Bristol.
Ruth E. Warren
Retired teacher, African violet cultivator
Ruth E. (Cook) Warren, 80, of Hancock Street, Tiverton, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2002, at home. She was the wife of the late Bertrand Warren.
Born in Dighton, Mass., she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (Mercer) Cook. She had lived in Fall River for most of her life, before moving to Tiverton five years ago.
Mrs. Warren was a physical education teacher in Fall River elementary schools for more than 20 years and later was an office assistant at BMC Durfee High School before retiring last year.
She also worked for the American Red Cross in Fall River as a coordinator of its candy-striper program.
A cultivator of African violets, she was a life member and master judge with the African Violet Society of America and had been contributing to the organization for more than 30 years. She was instrumental in organizing judging schools in New England and was an active member of the Judges Council of Massachusetts.
Mrs. Warren was also a member and past president of the Bay State African Violet Society, a member and past officer of the Moby Dick African Violet Society and a member of the Massachusetts African Violet Society.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Fall River.
She leaves a son, Richard Warren of North Attleboro, Mass.; a daughter, Priscilla Greene of Huntington, Ind.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late James Cook.
Her funeral was held Saturday, Nov. 30 in the Hathaway Home for Funerals in Fall River. Burial followed in Oak Grove Cemetery in Fall River.
Georgina Ferreira
Worked for Firestone’s gas mask division in WWII
Georgina "Georgie" (Medeiros) Ferreira, 91, of Fall River died Monday, Dec. 2, 2002, at St. Anne’s Hospital. She was the wife of the late Manuel S. Ferreira.
Born in Westport, she was the daughter of the late Mariano and the late Maria (Franco) Medeiros. She lived in Fall River for most of her life.
Mrs. Ferreira was a homemaker for most of her life. She worked at the former Firestone Rubber Co. in the gas mask division during World War II. She was also the treasurer for Manuel Ferreira Contracting.
Mrs. Ferreira was an accomplished seamstress and especially enjoyed her family and her faith.
She was a former member of the Fall River Area Chamber of Commerce and St. Louis King Parish, where she was a member of the women’s guild and the Monday evening prayer group.
She leaves a son, Manuel Ferreira of Dartmouth; two daughters, Dorothy Grocott of Assonet and Catherine Terceiro of Fall River; a stepson, Joseph Ferreira of Pawtucket, R.I.; a stepdaughter, Rose Perry of Fall River; a brother, Armand Medeiros of Newport, R.I.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Joseph, Mary, Adeline, Antone, John and Manuel Medeiros.
Funeral arrangements are by the Oliveira Funeral Home, 2064 South Main St., Fall River.
Robert Volpe
Assisted with Escobar fireworks
Robert "Bob" Volpe, 65, formerly of Middle Road, Portsmouth, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Catherine (Long) Volpe.
Born in Providence on April 17, 1937, he was the son of the late Vincent and Anna (Simoli) Volpe.
Mr. Volpe worked as a warehouse manager at Franklin Supply for 17 years before retiring 24 years ago. He assisted with the fireworks at Escobar Farms in Portsmouth since 1989 and was given the honorary title of publicity chairman by Louis Escobar.
Involved with the 4-H as a cat show judge, he also was an advocate against teenage drinking and drug use in the community, working through Portsmouth High School.
In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Paul Lewis of Elko, Minn., and Robert V. Volpe of Portsmouth; two daughters, Deborah Lemoi of Central Village, Conn., and Deborah Hutnak of Portsmouth; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Friday, Nov. 29 in the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was private.
Elizabeth Lewis
Active in town, church groups
Elizabeth Lewis, 88, formerly of Brook Street, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at the Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol. She was the wife of the late Arthur P. Lewis.
Born in Corry, Pa., the daughter of the late Richard G. and Margaret (Weeks) Dawson, she lived in Barrington over 50 years. She worked as a children’s librarian in Akron, Ohio and Providence until retiring in the 1970s.
She was a past president of the Barrington Women’s Club, a past vice president of the Episcopal Church Women of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Barrington, a member of the Barrington Garden Club, the Junior League of Providence and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum.
She leaves a son, Rev. A. Parker Lewis of Rock Island, Ill., a daughter, Sandra G. Lewis of Barrington,; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Nov. 30, in St. John’s Episcopal Church. Burial followed in St. John’s Church Memorial Garden.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, 191 County Road, Barrington, R.I. 02806.
Arrangements were by the Smith-Mason Funeral Home in Riverside.
Warren A. Davis
World War II vet, retired damage clerk
Warren Augustus Davis, 81, of 4 Scotty Drive, Portsmouth, died Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at Waterview Villa in East Providence. He was the husband of the late Jennie (Simmons) Davis.
Born in Newport on May 4, 1921, he was a son of the late Ernest and Alice (Pinheiro) Davis.
For four years during World War II, Mr. Davis was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps, serving in Okinawa and participating in the Air Offensive over Japan, the Eastern Mandates and the Ryukyus campaign.
He worked as a damage clerk and fright inspector for the New York/New Haven/Hartford rail service from 1937 to 1964. He later worked at the Officers Club and the Datum Club on the Newport Naval Base.
He leaves three brothers, Richard, Herbert and Don Davis, all of Middletown, as well as several nieces and nephews.
His funeral was held Monday, Dec. 2 in Memorial Funeral Home in Newport. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

Maria A. DaSilva
Funeral services for Maria A. (da Rosa) DaSilva were held Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church. The celebrant of the Mass was the Rev. Thomas J. Ferland. The Rev. Jose DosReis concelebrated.
Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Rev. Ferland offered the committal prayers.
Carlos M. Sousa, Robert D. Wilcox, Michael J. Noah, Kenneth J. Vadnais, Emile J. LaFleur, and Andrew J. LaFleur served as pallbearers.
Readers were Maria N. Correira and Sandra Faria. Elizabeth N. Sousa and Julie Wilcox presented gifts.
Mrs. DaSilva, 94, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at Miriam Hospital. She was the wife of the late Antonio DaSilva.
Fredy P. Roland
Funeral services for Dr. Fredy P. Roland M.D. were held Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, from the Sansone Funeral Home with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Church. The Rev. Barry J. Gamache was the principle celebrant and homilist for the Mass. The Rev. William J. Ledoux assisted. Readers for the Mass were his son, Dr. William Roland M.D. and daughter Martine Matzke. Family members presented offertory gifts. Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery where Father Gamache read the committal prayers.
Josh L. Roland, Matthew S. Roland, Peter B. Crowell, Ben R. Crowell, Robert Matzne, William E. Roland, Brad Fredman and Michael A. Roland served as pallbearers.
Dr. Roland, 83, the husband of Jacqueline (Schenziss) Roland of Poppasquash Road, died Friday, Nov. 29 at his home.

Gertrud Neissner
Funeral services for Gertrud "Trudy" (Andreaeskowske) Neissner were held on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, from the Sansone Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Jean Baptiste Church in Warren. The Rev. Peter J. Gower was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Offertory gifts were presented by Mrs. Neissner’s great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Cassie DeNunzio and Christopher and Stephen Wahrenberg.
Burial followed in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, where the Rev. Mr. James E. Conley, Deacon, read the committal prayers.
Mrs. Neissner, 94, the wife of the late Alfred Neissner of 320 North Lane, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at Waterview Villa Nursing Home in East Providence.
Peter F. Benevides
Owned and operated the Casual Inn for 27 years
Peter F. Benevides, 76, of 12 Westwood Road, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Metacom manor Health Center. He was the husband of Kathleen L. (Marshall) Benevides. They were married 52 years.
Born in Bristol and lifelong resident, Mr. Benevides was the son of the late Antonio F. and Adeline (Faria) Benevides.
He worked in the shipping department of the former Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corporation in both Bristol and Portsmouth for 30 years, and was the owner and operator of the Casual Inn restaurant on Franklin Street for 27 years before retiring in 1996.
Mr. Benevides was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Church where he was a former president and member of the Holy Name Society, benefactor of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and the former president and member of the Santo Christo Club. He was a former member of the board of directors of the East Bay Industrial Credit Union, the Democratic Town Committee, and as owner of the Casual Inn was for several years a team sponsor for Bristol Youth Soccer and the Men’s Senior Softball League.
Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Debra A. Lopes of Bristol; a son, Peter J. Benevides of Bristol; five grandchildren, Melissa Benevides of Providence and Jonathan Ferguson, Peter J. Benevides Jr., Carlos Lopes Jr. and Kathleen Lopes, all of Bristol; a brother, Anthony F. Benevides of Cape Cod, Mass.; five sisters, Mary Amaral and Madelyn Mitchell of Greenfield, Calif., and Cappy Marino, Elsie Pastore and Kathleen Lopes of Bristol.
He was also the father of the late Kathleen A. Ferguson and the brother of Alipio F., Joseph F. and August F. Benevides.
His funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 10, from the Sansone Funeral Home with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church. The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the principal celebrant and homilist for the Mass, while the Rev. Joseph D. Santos concelebrated.
Readers were Melissa Benevides, his granddaughter, and Patricia Faria, his niece.
Offertory gifts were presented by granddaughters Melissa Benevides and Kathleen Lopes.
Burial followed in North Burial Ground, where Fathers Ferland and Santos read the committal prayers.
Jonathan J. Ferguson, Peter J. Benevides Jr., Carlos A. Lopes Jr., Larry J. Ferguson, Graham S. Lombardo, Luis E. Dolan and Joseph K. Martin were pallbearers.
