John A. Anderson
Former resident; collected seashells

John A. Anderson, 57, of Riverside, died Tuesday, June 3, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of Norma P. (O’Keefe) Anderson and the late Barbara (Minardi) Anderson.

Born in Aurora, Ill., a son of the late Robert E. Anderson Sr. and Emily (Myers) Anderson, he had lived in Barrington before moving to Riverside 12 years ago. He was a truck driver for Compton Products in Burrillville for 20 years. He was also a Coast Guard veteran of the Vietnam War. A member of the Italian Club of Warren, he enjoyed bocce and collecting seashells.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Jason Murdock of Coventry and Joshua Murdock of Florida; two brothers, Robert E. Anderson Jr. of Newtown, Pa. and Karl A. Anderson of Barrington; a sister, Signe Hanson of Bedford, Mass.; and two grandchildren. He was the father of the late John Anderson Jr.

Funeral services were held Thursday, June 6, from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home in East Providence. Burial was in the South Burial Ground in Warren.

Mary C. Haber
Sewer for the former Health-Tex

Mary C. Haber, 93, of Kinnicutt Avenue, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Roger Williams Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Stanley Haber.

Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late Adam and Katarzyna (Wachowski) Kokoszka. She lived much of her life in Central Falls, moving to Warren in 1972.

Mrs. Haber was a sewer for the former Health-Tex Company in Central Falls before retiring.

She leaves a daughter, Patricia Mann of Warren; a sister, Constance Kalinowski of Lincoln; a brother, Joseph Kokoszka of Cranston; and a nephew, Lawrence Kokoszka of Attleboro; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Her funeral will be private.

George O. Martins
Leaves daughter in Little Compton

George O. Martins, 76, of Fall River, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the beloved companion of Helen Silvia of Fall River.

Born in Fall River on January 5, 1926, Mr. Martins was the son of the late Raul and Sarah (Oliveira) Martins. He was a lifelong resident of Fall River.

Mr. Martins was employed as a laborer, working for the city of Fall River for 10 years. He was previously employed at AC Lumber.

He served in the United States Marine Corps at the rank of lance corporal. He was a member of Notre Dame Parish.

In addition to his companion, Mr. Martins leaves two daughters, Sheila Quintin of Little Compton and Kimberley Thompson of Fall River; a sister, Alice Campos of Allentown, Pa.; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral was held Monday from the Oliveira Funeral Home in Fall River, with a Funeral Mass in Notre Dame Church in Fall River. Burial was in Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.

William Franklin Fisher
Summered on Prudence Island

William Franklin Fisher, 81, of Prudence Island and Hernando, Fla., died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Irene L. Fisher.

Born in Walpole, Mass., he was the son of the late Leon F. and Helen (Smith) Fisher. He summered on Prudence Island for the last 20 years.

Mr. Fisher was a graduate of Walpole High School and Northeastern University. He was a mechanical engineer for the Bird Machine Co. of South Walpole, Mass., for 49 years before retiring.

Mr. Fisher was awarded a Silver Star for bravery for his service in the Army during World War II. He was a former vestryman at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Walpole and a former scoutmaster for the Walpole Boy Scouts. He was also a well-known hockey player and avid golfer.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Fisher leaves two sons, Douglas Fisher of Pawtucket and Bruce Fisher of Biddeford, Maine; a daughter, Jill Nickerson of Wrentham, Mass.; three brothers, Oliver Fisher of Wrentham, Robert Fisher of Guilford, Conn., and Charles Fisher of Wareham, Mass.; two sisters, Alma Johnson of Walpole and Judith Lukacewicz of Norfolk, Mass.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was a brother of the late Leon Fisher and Helen Jillson.

His funeral was held Wednesday, June 12 in the Epiphany Episcopal Church in Walpole. Burial was in Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton, Mass.

Elizabeth A. McCready
Former member of RICC; ballet teacher

Elizabeth A. McCready, 84, of Nottingham Village in Northumberland, Pa., and formerly of Barrington, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at home.

Born in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of the late Frank L. and Hilda (Hunt) Armitage, she had lived in Hobe Sound, Fla. for 25 years before moving to Nottingham Village last year. She had also lived in Barrington, Wellsley, Mass. and St. Louis, Mo.

Mrs. McCready was a graduate of Miami University of Ohio and had taught ballet in Akron. She enjoyed playing bridge and golf and was a member of the Rhode Island Country Club.

She leaves two daughters, Dr. Prue Talbot of Redondo Beach, Calif. and Judi Karr of Lewisburg, Pa.; a sister, Jean Tingley of North Palm Beach, Fla.; and a granddaughter. She was a sister of the late Pat Kenney and Frank Armitage.

A memorial service was held Friday, June 7, at Nottingham Village. Burial will take place at a later date.

Antonio Nunes Jr.

Born in Portugal, member of St. Elizabeth’s Church

Antonio Nunes Jr., 90, of 35 Dreadnaught Ave. died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband for 53 years of Maria (Quintal) Nunes.

Born in Madeira, Portugal, a son of the late Antonio and Maria (Nobriga) Nunes, he was a resident of Bristol for 28 years. He previously resided in Central Falls.

He was a wire worker for 35 years at the former Colony Wire Company of Central Falls, retiring in 1970.

Mr. Nunes was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church and a member of the Blessed Sacrament Club of New Bedford, Mass.

He leaves three brothers, Augustinho Nunes of East Providence, Daniel Nunes of Raynham, Mass. and Joseph Nunes of Clearwater, Fla.

He was also the brother of Manuel and John Nunes.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 8, from the Sansone Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church. The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Readers were his nieces MaryLou Palumbo and Rosie Aguiar. His sisters-in-law Adeline Correia and Josephine Baptista presented offertory gifts.

Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery where Father Ferland read the committal prayers. His nephews George and Frank Correia, Joseph Nunes Jr., and Richard, John and Anthony G. Nunes were pallbearers.

Arthur Ferias Jr.

Lived in Warren, leaves family here

Arthur Ferias Jr., 51, of Truman Avenue, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence.

Born in Providence, he was a son of Mary (Charette) Ferias of Warren and the late Arthur Ferias Sr. He had lived in Warren for most of his life.

He had served in the Army National Guard for four years.

Mr. Ferias was a self-employed floor coverer for many years, learning the trade from his father, "Smokey" Ferias. He enjoyed sailing and shell fishing and was an avid Red Sox fan.

Besides his mother, he leaves a brother, Kevin Ferias of Warren; two sisters, Kathleen Canario of Warren and Terri Boccella of Richboro, Pa., and several nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Tina Marie Ferias.

His funeral will be on Saturday, June 15, in Wilbur- Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St. in Warren.

Angela A. Vescera
Lived in Bristol
for most of her life

Angela A. Vescera, 98, of Benjamin Church Manor in Bristol died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Desilets Nursing Home in Warren.

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Raffaele and Filomena (Avossa) Cirillo. She was a resident of Bristol for most of her life.

She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and a member of the Holy Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Benjamin Church Manor Association.

She leaves three daughters, Sister Lucy Vescera M.P.F. of Bristol, Philomena Rao Bonomo of North Providence and Mary M. Vescera of Cranston; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Oronzo R. Vescera and grandmother of the late Ann Leslie Rao.

Her funeral Mass was held Tuesday, May 28, in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, followed by burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Thomas H. Byrnes Jr.

Funeral services for Thomas H. Byrnes Jr. were held Friday, June 14, 2002, from the Sansone Funeral Home, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Church. The Rev. Clyde J. Walsh was the principle celebrant and homilist for the Mass. The Rev. Barry J. Gamache was the concelebrant. Mr. Byrnes’ grandchildren Kyle M. Byrnes and Sherry Bailey were the readers. His son Michael T. Byrnes was the eulogist. Granddaughters Meredith Byrnes and Emily, Mariel and Katie Bailey presented offertory gifts.

Burial with military honors followed in North Burial Ground, where Father Walsh read the committal prayers. Dean G. Robinson, Darryl A. Bailey, Thomas S. Bailey, Matthew J. Turner and Christopher J., Patrick M., Kyle M. and Corey J. Byrnes were the pallbearers.

Mr. Byrnes, 83, of Church Street, died Monday, June 10, at home. He was the husband of Constance G. (Campanella) Byrnes. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bristol Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 775, Bristol, RI 02809, or VNA of Rhode Island, 622 George Washington Highway, Lincoln, RI 02865.

Lincoln D. Brayton
Attorney, active in many area organizations

Attorney Lincoln Davol Brayton, 96 of Pomfret, Vt., formerly of Swansea and Fall River, died on Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Mertens House in Woodstock, Vt. He was the husband of Josephine (Knowles) Brayton to whom he had been married for 56 years.

Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late William Lawton Slade Brayton and the late Mary Easton (Ashley) Brayton. He was a graduate of The Hill School, Harvard College, Class of 1928, and Harvard Law School, Class of 1931. At Harvard he was a member of the track team, running the quarter-mile. Track and field remained a lifelong interest.

Mr. Brayton practiced law with Hurlbert, Jones and Hall in Boston, and in 1936 returned to Fall River to establish his own private practice which he continued for nearly 60 years. He was active in many civic, community and church organizations.

During World War II, he served as a Navy lieutenant commander in the Central Pacific Theater.

In 1947, Mr. Brayton was general chairman of the first Community Fund Campaign in Fall River, later known as the United Way. He later served on the Fall River Industrial Commission. He was a director of the Sagamore Manufacturing Co. and Union Savings Bank in Fall River. For many years, he was a director of the Stevens Children’s Home in Swansea.

A member of the First Congregational Church in Fall River, he served as treasurer for 27 years. In 1978, he received the church’s Lex Souter Humanitarian Award.

Mr. Brayton and his wife enjoyed traveling the western United States and the Yukon Territory of Canada. He was an avid walker, rower and reader of history.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Stephen K. Brayton and Nathanael R. Brayton, both of Dedham, Mass.; and a brother, Richard A. Brayton of Short Hills, N.J.; and many other relatives in the Little Compton, Tiverton and Westport areas. He was also the brother of the late Sherman, Perry and Lawton S. Brayton, Constance B. Cherry, Ruth B. Durfee, Mary Elizabeth Katzenbach and Harriet B. Marvel.

A Service of Thanksgiving and Tribute will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 11 a.m. in the First Congregational Church, 282 Rock St., Fall River.. Arrangements are by the ‘Cherry Place’ Home of Waring-Sullivan in Fall River.

Peter J. Bodrian
Born in Warren,
World War II veteran

Peter J. Bodrian, 82, of Ellis Avenue died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at Silver Creek Manor in Bristol.

Born in Warren, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary (Chrycaj) Bodrian.

Mr. Bodrian was an electrician at ITT in Pawtucket. He was a communicant of St. Casimir Church and had served in the Army Air Force during World War II.

He leaves two sisters, Antoinette Witt of Warren and Julia Tidewell of Texas, and one brother, Frank Bodrian of Warren. He was the brother of the late Joseph Bodrian, Katherine Wilbour and Anna McNeil.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Bodrian was celebrated on Saturday, June 15, in St. Casimir Church. He was buried in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery in Warren.
