Benjamin K. Couza
Member of Noquochoke Lodge, Cortez Allen Chapter
Benjamin K. Couza, 84, of North Dartmouth died unexpectedly at St. Luke’s Hospital on June 4, 2002. He was the husband of Ethel (Stringer) Couza and son of the late Mary D. (Arendell) Couza Howlett and the late William W. Couza.
Mr. Couza was born in New Bedford where he lived until moving to Dartmouth in 1943.
He was employed as a steam engineer by the former J.C. Rhodes in New Bedford for 15 years and worked for the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber for 13 years until his retirement.
Mr. Couza was a member of Noquochoke Lodge AF&AM in Westport for 55 years and a member of Cortez Allen Chapter, O.F.S. #161, in Westport for 50 years.
He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in New Bedford.
He enjoyed singing in the church choir, sculpting and working around his home.
In addition to his wife of 60 years, he leaves three daughters, Carolyn F. Siivola of Fowlerville, Mich., Marian J. Ryall of Milford, Conn., and Katherine J. Plant of North Dartmouth; four grandchildren, Edward P. Siivola of Raleigh, S.C., Sonja J. Cook of Wolverine, Mich., Stacy Steimle of North Dartmouth and Ann K. Rose of New Bedford; a great-granddaughter, Jewel A. Rosa of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Cynthia Broome.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 8, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in New Bedford. Arrangements were by the Kirby Funeral Home of New Bedford.
Elzear L. Chabot
World War II veteran
fought at Normandy
Elzear L. "Leo" Chabot, 88, of Pawleys Island, S.C., and formerly of Westport, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital in Georgetown, S.C., after a brief illness. He was the husband of Diana (Belisle) Chabot.
The son of the late Arthur and Roseanna (Plante) Chabot, he was born in Fall River and lived most of his life in Westport. He worked as a self-employed barber for more than 50 years.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Chabot fought at Normandy and received three battle stars. He was a member of the American Legion Post 145 and the Disabled American Veterans, a past commander of the V.F.W. Ouellette Post and a charter member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Chabot was an avid baseball fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox.
In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Eileen Delsolia and her husband, Bob, of Pawleys Island, S.C.; two sisters, Rita Baker of Westport and Lorraine Dufault of Somerset; three grandchildren, Brian Delsolia and his wife, April, of Methuen, Gena Mitchell and her husband, Christopher, of Methuen, and Karen Mendieta and her husband, Norman, of Lawrence, and six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, June 14, at 11:30 a.m. at St. George’s Church in Westport. Arrangements are by Potter Funeral Home.
Cheryl D. Smith

Cheryl D. Smith, 58, of New Bedford died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at St. Luke’s Hospital.
Born in Westport, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Doris (Teasdale) Smith, she lived in Greater New Bedford.
Ms. Smith was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed going to Project Independence. She had many friends at the dialysis clinic and loved her two cats.
Ms. Smith was loved by all of her many friends. She leaves two sisters.
She was the mother of the late Sandra Borges, a sister of the late Richard Smith and, for many years, the companion of the late Ernest Borges and the late Brian Hebert.
Her graveside service was held on Thursday, June 13, at St. John’s Cemetery. Arrangements were by Boulevard Funeral Home in New Bedford.
Doris A. McCarthy

Doris A. (Wilkie) McCarthy, 78, of Fall River died Friday, June 7, 2002, at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River. She was the wife of the late Thomas A. McCarthy.
Born in Little Compton, Mrs. McCarthy was the daughter of the late Addie B. (Kirby) Bennett. She lived in Fall River most of her life.
Mrs. McCarthy was employed by the former Gemco Inc. of Fall River. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Mrs. McCarthy leaves a son, Robert W. McCarthy of Swansea; two daughters, Virginia C. Dube of Assonet, Mass., and Janice L. Levesque of Fall River; a sister, Edith O’Keefe of Virginia; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Her funeral was held Sunday, June 9 at the Potter Funeral Home in Westport.
Rose C. Lenox

resident for 23 years
Rose C. Lenox, 89, of Wild Cherry Drive, Little Compton, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at St. Anne’s Hospital, Fall River. She was the wife of the late Edward F. Lenoz Sr.
Born in Newark, N.J., a daughter of the late Frank X. and Rose (Ritger) Renner, she had lived in Needham, Mass., for 21 years before moving to Little Compton 23 years ago.
She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Little Compton.
She leaves three sons, Edward F. Lenox Jr. of Wrentham, Mass., William F. Lenox of Scituate, and John F. Lenox of Plymouth, Mass.; and five grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Frank Renner, George Renner and Hildegard Hebert.
Her funeral was held on Wednesday, June 12, from the Fern Acres Funeral Home, Little Compton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine of Siena Church on The Commons. Burial was in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Little Compton.
Frank M. ‘Flash’ Correia

Frank M. "Flash" Correia, 80, of Fall River, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Alice (Almeida) Correia.
Born in Tiverton, he was the son of the late Peter and Anna (Medeiros) Correia. He had lived in Fall River for most of his life.
Mr. Correia worked for the Fall River School Department and at the Fall River Incinerator for several years, retiring in 1981. He also worked for the former Firestone Rubber and Latex Company and was a member of the Retired Fall River Municipal Employees Association.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a life member of the Woodrow L. Silvia VFW Post 5392, Tiverton, and the Disabled American Veterans, William S. Green Chapter.
Mr. Correia was a graduate of the former Thibodeau Business School and had been active in the Boy Scouts of America and the South End Baseball Association during his youth.
He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Westport and was a communicant of Holy Trinity Church.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Correia leaves a son, Frank P. Correia of Tiverton; a brother, Alfred Correia of Tiverton; and three grandchildren.
He was the brother of the late Manuel, Joseph, Peter, John and Ernest Correia.
His funeral was held Wednesday from Oliveira Funeral Home in Fall River, with a funeral Mass in Holy Ghost Church in Tiverton. Entombment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.
John J. Silvia

John J. Silvia, 76, of Middletown, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of Margaret A. (Gramplini) Silvia of Middletown.
Born in Middletown on Dec. 10, 1925, Mr. Silvia was the son of the late John A. and Mary D. (Soeria) Silvia.
Mr. Silvia worked for Frank Flowers, Bacon & McLeach and the Sulbro Corporation as a carpenter until his retirement in 2000. He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1954, then was a charter member of the Middletown K of C , where he was very active and was a past grand knight from 1968 to 1970.
Mr. Silvia was president of the Seven Castles Club, a member of the former Newport Saltwater Fishing Club and a member of the Green Valley Country Club. He was an avid golfer and loved fishing.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Silvia leaves a son, John A. Silvia of Portsmouth; a daughter, Margaret S. Glenn of Knoxville, Tenn.; and three granddaughters, Janet Glenn of Knoxville, Dawn Rutkowski of Fort Worth, Texas, and Joy Douglas of West Palm Beach, Fla.
His funeral was held on Saturday, June 8, from the Memorial Funeral Home in Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Lucy’s Church in Middletown. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.
Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Middletown Rescue Wagon Fund, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842.
Thomas Hashway

foreman at textile mills
Thomas Hashway, 84, of Main Road, Tiverton, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Providence. He was the husband of the late Felicia John Hashway and the late Matilda (Matook) Hashway.
Born in Woonsocket, a son of the late Badi and Kokab (Jallad) Hashway, he had lived in Cenral Falls, Pawtucket and Fall River before moving to Tiverton three years ago. He was a 1935 graduate of Central Falls High School.
Mr. Hashway had been a foreman at various textile mills in the Pawtucket and Fall River areas for 45 years before retiring in 1979.
An Army veteran of World War II, serving as a master sergeant, he had received many medals and citations including the Bronze Star, the Belgium Freedom Medal and the French Liberty Medal.
Mr. Hashway was a member of St. Mary’s Syrian Orthodox Church in Pawtucket and the E.L. Freeman Lodge 41, F&AM, Pawtucket.
He leaves two sons, Dr. Thomas Hashway Jr. of Hixson, Tenn., and Philip Hashway of Orange County, Calif.; a daughter, Mary Chiaverini of Orange County; two stepsons, James John of Buffalo, N.Y., and Gary John of Fall River; a stepdaughter, Andrea Robitaille of Fall River, and nine grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Roger, Ned and Baheig Hashway.
His funeral and burial will be private.
Adam F. Trabert
Former service rep., enjoyed writing, martial arts
Adam F. Trabert, 29, of 1863 Pleasant St., Fall River, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at home.
Born in Baltimore, Md., a son of August C. Trabert in West Virginia and the late Doris Jean (Viveiros) Trabert, he had lived in Portsmouth and Fall River most of his life.
Mr. Trabert attended Bristol Community College and was a former member of its Portuguese Club. He was an avid writer and enjoyed martial arts and reading science fiction.
He previously worked as a service representative at Harte-Hanks, West Bridgewater, Mass., and at Lightbride, Waltham, Mass.
Besides his father, he leaves a brother, Charles A. Trabert of Tiverton; a sister, Doreen L. Ptak of Livermore, Calif.; and two nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, June 8, in St. Anne’s Church, Fall River. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.
